Jun 20, 2010I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

General :: Keep A Backup Of A Bunch Of Files On A Flash Drive?
Apr 29, 2011I keep a backup of a bunch of files on a flash drive, so that whenever I change distributions I can just restore all my Android stuff (saves on re-downloading everything). One of these is the Android SDK.
In my ~/.bashrc I add the paths to some executables in the SDK, only if the directory exists, and only if the path is not already in $PATH. For the Android NDK this works fine, but for the SDK I get this:

Now, I've saw something similar to this before whenever you move an executable from one place to another. If you don't re-source your bash config it will continue to keep looking wherever it used to be located. But I've never moved these files.
Ubuntu :: USB Flash Boot Drive Goes Read-only
Aug 24, 2010I have a linux server running ubuntu 10.04, kernel Linux server 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux. A few months ago I installed ubuntu to a USB flash drive (Patriot 16GB) and was able to successfully boot off it, and everything was running fine. Then all of a sudden I noticed that the root filesystem was read-only, and I saw errors in the kernel log:

I tried reading the drive to see if there was a problem with the drive itself:

But the strange thing is that if I put that usb stick in a different linux server, I'm able to read the whole drive. If I run fsck, it fixes a bunch of errors, but when I put the drive back in the original PC it will work for a while and then fail with the same type of I/O error (not at the same offset though). I had this same problem occur on a different USB stick in the same server, I had thought it was bad media so I replaced it, but now the same problem is happening on a different usb drive. I have backups of the data, but I would really like to figure out what is causing this before I throw in the towel and buy a new PC.

Ubuntu :: Can Read But Not Copy Files From UFS Drive
Aug 15, 2010My Freenas server is currently off line for the moment pending the arrival of some thermo paste and I need to get some files off one of the drives. The drive is formatted in the UFS file system.I am using a usb to sata converter to hook the drive up to my laptop which is running 10.04.I am then able to browse the files by going to my /mnt folder. The problem is I cannot copy any of the files. I get a permission error. I have tried chmod 777 command to change the permission but I get an error about it being read-only. I tried running nautilus as root to copy the files but I still get a permission error. Using nautilus as root to change the permission or alter any of the read/write options fails because the drive is read only.
From what I understand I can only mount the drive as read only because its UFS and I can't change the permissions because its read only. Sounds a bit like an endless loop lol.Running Freesbie (freebsd live cd) didn't do me any good as it didn't even detect my hard drive and I don't want to learn a new OS just to transfer my files.ny advice would be appreciated. I really don't want to wait until my thermo paste comes and I will be on the road for the next couple of weeks so I won't even be able to get it setup. I need these files now.
Software :: Read Files In Subdirectories On Encrypted Drive
Dec 18, 2010Two machines -- both 64-bit, both the latest Truecrypt installed, one Windows, one Linux. I created encrypted pendrive (using partition mode; not file-partition on regular partition) with FAT system on it. I copied several files/directories there -- using Windows. Then I unmounted it, mounted in Linux, but when I checked if everything is OK, it appeared that only the highest level of file hierarchy is visible -- i.e. only files and directories at mount point. Directories are seen as empty (in fact they are NOT empty). When I unmount pendrive and mount it again on Windows, all files/subdirectories are visible again. It is not an issue with older version of TC on Linux, because the version is the same. The question: how to make files in subdirectories visible on Linux?

It will still ll me that only 3100MB are left in free space. If I try to add more than that it tells me the drive is full. I keep reformatting and reformatting into all different types on file systems but nothing works.

When I opened it in PCMan File manager it did not show, but executing ls in a terminal shows the text file just fine. It is the only one that appears to be missing in PCManfm. Aug 17, 2010I know it is possible to boot Ubuntu Live from a Flash drive. But it just boots up and runs like its a CD. When you shut down the computer, the changes are all lost.
Is there any way to use the flash drive as a Hard Drive? like install Ubuntu on the flash drive and have the flash drive act as a hard drive - so that if I boot with the flash drive in the computer I can boot of of the flash drive and it would act as a hard drive?
Could I just setup Ubuntu and select the flash drive as the install directory? would that accomplish this?

Nov 8, 2010I have a linux system which has a NAND flash. The compressed kernel is flashed into the NAND flash. On boot up, the kernel is uncompressed, copied to RAM and runs from RAM. Is it possible for me to read the kernel information from NAND flash such as size, start and end location and version?
I have been looking for this in the net, but did not find any answers so far...
I have tried the following: The compressed kernel lies in the 4MB partition of the flash. So I tried: dd if=/dev/mtdblock1 of=zImage But this copies the complete 4MB partition. I need to copy only the zImage. So I need to know its size.
General :: Embedded Webserver (mysql) On A Compact Flash: Reduce Read / Write Operations?
Jul 7, 2011I've developed a tiny webserver for home automation out of an ALIX 1D, and based on a debian lenny. It runs very smoothly and is now able to operate quite a lot of different equipment from a webapp. But i'm not sure how I should handle the compact flash, regarding read/write limitations. From what I've read the partitioning should be ext2, which would disallow the journalisation of the system. A utility to 'flatten' the repartition of write cycles exists, would it be relevant to use if the partition is ext2 ?
I will also disable all logging in execution mode (a debug mode will provide the logs). Is there any other parameters I have to take into account for maximum reliability (i.e. does the system randomly write in some files for various and potentially turned off purposes)? As for the mysql database, it's not important data, and it's actually reconstructed every time the server boots. Given this, is there a way to store the db in RAM rather than in a file? I'm not sure it's the right place to ask, but I sometimes see redirection to here from stack overflow.

Mar 16, 2011I administer a remote server via SSH that runs CentOS 5.5. I have been unsuccessful in all my attempts to write to two different external USB hard drives with a single ext3 partition when logged in as root.

it doesn't give me any response so I presume it succeeded but when I try to touch it, it tells me it's a read-only file system
