General :: Mount A Single RAID 1 Disk / Partition As Ext3?

Jul 7, 2011

I need to copy data from a single HD, which used to be part of a Linux RAID 1. I've googled around, but can't find any clue how to mount partitions from this single HD.

Background: The HD comes from a linux based NAS box Synology DS207+. The NAS uses ext3 as filesystem. Both NAS disks are fine, but the other NAS hardware is dead and not worth repairing or replacing.

Ubuntu :: Used Gnome Partition Editor To Format As A Single Primary Partition Of The Full 500 Gb Drive?

Jan 18, 2010

So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. I tried following the instructions from this link to add the 2nd drive:

(So the forum rules won't let me post the link, neato. Here it is with spaces added):

Ubuntu :: Top-right Single Pixel Is No Longer Part Of "Close" X

Oct 28, 2010

Recently, I loaded the new Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat

Like many others, I'm sure, I run my mouse with the speed of light. So, I often zip my pointer up to the top right corner, hitting the virtual "wall" and landing on the very top right pixel, and click - expecting that the window will close. In the new 10.10, the top right pixel is not included in the mighty "X" button in any theme I have tried. So, now I have to exercise some precision and move a little down/left to click my close button. It is an annoyance that I'm simply not willing to accept any longer.

For the life of me, even though I am a 4-year Ubuntu user, I have never had much reason to play with the themes or make a change like this, and I can't seem to figure out how to fix it.

how to adjust the theme / border / title bar such that the close-window "X" includes the top right pixel?

Jun 23, 2011

I have installed my server running centos 5.6 on single LVM partiton

scheme is luke this:
/boot - ext3
Volume Group
- System LV - /
- Swap LV - swap

how can i separate devide root partition on several partition for separate directories like

Volume Group
- System - /
- Home - /home
- Var - /var
- Swap - swap

Is there any chance to do this ? also is there are basic recomendations for server partition sizes ? i will have mail server and virtual host there in /home vmail and vhost is it ok: 10gb - /; 20gb - /var; 200gb - /home ?

of course after doing separate LVM partitions i can expand them in future, but what are basics ?

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot With Single /Home Partition?

Mar 5, 2010

Situation:
8GB SSD
#! on a 3.7GB partition, only 2.5GB used
Kuki (XFCE) on a 3.4GB partition, about 3GB used)

Both have their own /home folders within their individual /, but since I don't use this computer for documents/personal files, I figured it may be an idea to keep a 1GB partition just for my Home folder which would work for both distros. Both distros are Ubuntu based. Crunchbang uses Openbox, Kuki uses XFCE. They both are running the same kernel right now too in fact. I know how to use Gparted to create the spare 1GB partition, but I'm not sure how to get both distros to move their /home over there. I have the same usernames on each distros.

Ubuntu :: Single Home Partition Access With 10.04 And 11.04 Multiple Distributions

Apr 26, 2011

I've set up a separate Data partition, Creating a separate home partition in Ubuntu during installation Now I wish, if I'm able too, to access this partition of Data with both my 10.04 LTS edition and the new 11.04 Edition of Ubuntu.I tried once, using the methods above, to gain access to that partition, but it just denied me access to the 11.04 installation.I edited the Fstab file in mediaubuntu 11.04etcfstab, and changed back to regain access.* Mount ubuntu 11.04 first to access it*

Am I able to configure my system, that both distributions, can access the same Data partition. If so How would I go about it.I have 2 separate login names for the 2 distributions, but I want to access the same Data partition, folders, using either one. Same programs, games, and e-mail accounts. Also how would I set up Evolution, so that both operating systems use the same e-mail database, saving me from having mail in both, and no idea of where any of it is.I've read numerous posting on this, but either they don't apply, are just too technical, or only relate to 8.04 at best.

Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Couldn't Combine Two Unallocated Spaces Under Single Partition

Apr 9, 2011

i found in some thread that Swap space wasnt really necessary for RAM of over 1 GB, and true to it, i wasnt using using much of my 4GB allocated for swap ever so i deleted it ( dunno if it was wise, but didnt face any problems when i first deleted). today, i found out from another thread on a way to extend the size of /home directory if it was on a seperate mountpoint, and if space was available on my hard disk.

i just had 1 GB allocated to home directory and it used to fill up quite rapidly (due to cache from google chrome). I made a backup of my home directory contents, and i deleted the /home partition through the Disk utility. Somehow i couldnt combine the two unallocated spaces under a single partition why is that? (My plan was to combine that 1GB and the 4GB from the earlier swap space to use a 5GB home partition.) then i restarted and ever since i have been seeing the Grub error, and am not able to access my operating systems normally. GRUB Loading stage 1.5 Grub loading, please wait Error 15 . i am attaching the results.txt from my system obtained by booting through a liveCD. Something tells me that the way ive been following has been a roundabout one or a very inefficient one. how can i restore my system to normalcy

Software :: Mounting Single Fat32 Partition Inside Full Disc Image

Dec 19, 2009

I have recovered a whole dying hard drive using the command ddrescue, only 8192 byte out of 4.3 gigabyte are unreadable.I have used the command (gnu) ddrescue /dev/sdb DiskImage.img..But unfortunatly this way i have a full-disk image that is not mountable... ( or at least i don't know how to mount it ), and the disk doesn't seem to work anymore that good... ( crack crack crack... ).To see the partitions inside the "big" file, i have used fdisk -l, and damn there is only one partition, but how can i mount the content???

I know i could use photorec foremost or similar software, but since the disc image is almost perfect, i would be able to preserve file names, paths and dates...The last idea would be to mount it as a full-drive image with Virtualbox... But transferring data would be quite annoying.

General :: Filesystem With Inodes Close On The Disk?

Jan 9, 2011

I'd like to make the ls -laR /media/myfs on Linux as fast as possible. I'll have 1 million files on the filesystem, 2TB of total file size, and some directories containing as much as 10000 files. Which filesystem should I use and how should I configure it?As far as I understand, the reason why ls -laR is slow because it has to stat(2) each inode (i.e. 1 million stat(2)s), and since inodes are distributed randomly on the disk, each stat(2) needs one disk seek. Here are some solutions I had in mind, none of which I am satisfied with:Create the filesystem on an SSD, because the seek operations on SSDs are fast. This wouldn't work, because a 2TB SSD doesn't exist, or it's prohibitively expensive.

Create a filesystem which spans on two block devices: an SSD and a disk; the disk contains file data, and the SSD contains all the metadata (including directory entries, inodes and POSIX extended attributes). Is there a filesystem which supports this? Would it survive a system crash (power outage)?Use find /media/myfs on ext2, ext3 or ext4, instead of ls -laR /media/myfs, because the former can the advantage of the d_type field (see in the getdents(2) man page), so it doesn't have to stat. Unfortunately, this doesn't meet my requirements, because I need all file sizes as well, which find /media/myfs doesn't print.Use a filesystem, such as VFAT, which stores inodes in the directory entries. I'd love this one, but VFAT is not reliable and flexible enough for me, and I don't know of any other filesystem which does that. Do you? Of course, storing inodes in the directory entries wouldn't work for files with a link count more than 1, but that's not a problem since I have only a few dozen such files in my use case.

Adjust some settings in /proc or sysctl so that inodes are locked to system memory forever. This would not speed up the first ls -laR /media/myfs, but it would make all subsequent invocations amazingly fast. How can I do this? I don't like this idea, because it doesn't speed up the first invocation, which currently takes 30 minutes. Also I'd like to lock the POSIX extended attributes in memory as well. What do I have to do for that?Use a filesystem which has an online defragmentation tool, which can be instructed to relocate inodes to the the beginning of the block device. Once the relocation is done, I can run dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/null bs=1M count=256 to get the beginning of the block device fetched to the kernel in-memory cache without seeking, and then the stat(2) operations would be fast, because they read from the cache. Is there a way to lock those inodes and/or blocks into memory once they have been read? Which filesystem has such a defragmentation tool?
