In other UNIX-like OS I can go to an rc file (like kdmrc) and find the line "Allow root access at login=no" and change it to yes. How would I do this in Fedora-12, or what do I need to do to obtain permanent root accessed including with-in the GUI and not just at the command-line. I use only GNOME for Fedora-12

We can mount one NFS server just fine, but if we try mounting a share from another NFS server on the same domain we are unable to. We are using Fedora 10. Has anyone run into a problem trying to mount an exported share folder from an NFS server. Some of us get access denied and we've chmod 777 on the exported folder. The export file contains:
/labdocs 192.168.1.0/24(rw, sync, no_root_squash)
And that's it. We run exportfs -a -v and it shows up fine. On one of the client systems we try to mount the folder on a directory created by root
mkdir /docs
mount 192.168.1.13:/labdocs /docs
it either hangs or displays a message access denied.

I have the fedora 13 installed on my pc, but I have chroot debian in my NAS arm. My question is for NAS, but is the same for only linux generally. Regarding NAS, some packets are old, because there are not binaries for latest version for a software. But I can install latest software from source configure, make, make install etc... In the case of NAS, this process goes for many hours like 12hours or more.
In order to avoid the same process again in the case of a clean install of chroot debian, or to configure 2-3 NASes that I have, how can I "backup" the software that other times fast install.

I have a Norton Ghost .gho file, and basicly I want to extract the raw image out of this, for example to use with with tools like dd. (So using any symantec/windows tools is not an option). Is there any open source tool which can deal with these .gho files ?
(Note: the.gho file I'm using is a sector based one, and not a file-based one, which implies that things such as Ghost explorer won't work either (see this page)

I am trying to figure out a way to pull the user information from local users on a Linux server. I have approximately 40 servers running SUSE and Ubuntu that are using Microsoft Active Directory in order to authenticate. Our internal auditing group has made us disable root ssh ability, I was doing this with clusterssh, but I can login as me then su on the server to conduct root, admin, work. This is an ongoing request to get the local users and it is a painfully slow process since I have to login to each server to get the /etc/passwd file. Is there another way to get the local user information? They are now asking about seeing the last logon date or if the account is disabled, any thoughts there as well? Most of our auditors think Windows and I am trying to make my life easier but not sure what options I have. I need to get local accounts and if they are active or disabled plus last logon date. I'm sure there will be more but if I can get the basics adding more shouldn't be too difficult but I guess I'll cross that bride when I get there.

I accidentally deleted my .config for my kernel configuration on Linux, and seem to remember there was a way to retrieve the kernel configuration via the proc filesystem somehow. Is this still possible, and if so how would I do it?

trying to understand the two underlined sentences below I got to ask Step by step. I created a new group called usb. I inserted a usb printer and scanner. I tried to find the file usbfs and there is where get stuck already. I only can find a folder with that name. The sentence (3 -) makes almost no sense to me.
a) modify file /etc/fstab clear open terminal, go to etc, su gedit fstab
b) inserting a line yes I understand that!
c) the right path and the number corresponding the "usb" group :
none /sys/bus/usb/drivers usbfs devgid=503,devmode=664 0 0
2 - locate file usbfs: in my case is /sys/bus/usb/drivers (I suggest to find the file with a usb device inserted;
3 - modify file /etc/fstab inserting a line containing the right path and the number corresponding the "usb" group :
none /sys/bus/usb/drivers usbfs devgid=503,devmode=664 0 0

I got 2 ADSL accounts from a provider, so I decided to configure a server as a gateway for my other PCs.. I created ppp0 device using pppoe-setup over eth0. Then I configured the second one as ppp1 over eth2 to the second modem.. When I finished, I used ifconfig to check the settings and I got only ppp0 and didn't see ppp1, I tried to ifup ppp1 but I still get one device with ifconfig.. The adsl-start command starts only ppp0.What should I do to get the 2 lines to work simultaneously? Are there any configuration files that need to be edited?

I'm having some problems bringing up my wireless card at boot time on my Red Hat Linux 9.0 box. After some investigation with the boot scripts, I noticed that it was having problems with the DHCP negotiations when the ifup wlan0 command is issued.I then tested the command outside of the booting process and everytime the command is issued the first time, the dhclient fails to get any DHCP offers and returns with the message Unable to obtain a lease on first try. Exiting. and then exits.
If I then issue the same ifup command again a second time, it successfully receives a DHCP offer from the router and receives the needed IP address, and after this, the Internet connection on the box works fine. It is consistently doing this everytime. Why is it failing to obtain a lease the first time?

I'm still fairly new to Linux so please forgive me if my description of my problem leaves out important information. My problem is centered around using a AT91SAM9G45 development board (DB)on Fedora 10. I have directions on how to setup on my host machine a DHCP server to connect to the development board. I have installed an additional network card (eth1) that will be used exclusively to communicate with my DB.
The DB has been setup with an ethaddr=12:34:56:78:9a:bc and an ipaddr=192.168.251.191.
The following is info from ifconfig for eth1:
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0A:5E:1A:46:1C
inet addr:192.168.251.190 Bcast:192.168.251.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

I am trying to write a bash script that would save the current state of my konsole terminals and sessions. I'm using KDE3.X and for some reason the "profile" save does not save the current working directories... Anyway, I would like to know if there is an elegant way to obtain the current workdir of each terminal and session ? I've managed to do something with a clever use of DCOP extended functions, but it requires me to start every konsole with the --script option enabled, and I don't want to do that.

An old machine in our office, running Ubuntu 6.06 all of a sudden will not boot up. I get the following info during boot:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok Booting the kernel
mount: Mounting /root/sda1 /root failed: No such device
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: No such file or directory
[code]....
I haven't changed anything on the system as far as I'm aware, and I ran some HD diagnostics and everything seems fine. however when I try to mount the drive with the following command:
sudo mount -t ext3 -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt
I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/sda1, missing code
page or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in
syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
I ran fdisk -l and it says the partition type is Linux. The output after running dmesg | tail :
[12207.483801] init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (101)
[12207.483809] EXT2-fs: corrupt root inode, run e2fsck
[12260.427078] init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (101)

Update: After running e2fsck -p /dev/sda1, I get the following info:
/dev/sda1: clean, 142449 / 9584640 files, 5402711 / 19161520 blocks

I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

I am trying to install google chrome on my computer, it is in a .deb package and I am using dreamlinux. Earlier today I installed a .cbr/.cbz file reader from root, that was also a .deb and it worked just fine. now I go to install google chrome and it says (Blue is my command, and red is the system response):
I checked under my USER GROUPS and Root is still set as root, and I haven't been using it unless I need to install with it to other directories, Should I be using another command to install? or is it a problem that may affect other aspects of my system? ... My biggest concern is not getting google in, I can wait for that ... I just wanna know why ROOT is under the impression it's not a superuser.

My first installation of RedHat was in 1996 , version 3, then I switched to Mandrake because they supported the hardware I had at that time. Now I am a little worried about the direction Mandriva has taken lately so need to reconsider RedHat. I was hoping to buy the distribution on a disk medium but the main site seems to be addressed to the business community not home users like me. Downloading is not attractive so I wondered if it was possible to buy a boxed set of Fedora or RedHat for a home user.

I have a machine which has only /opt with some decent amount of space where I can install a software. /opt belongs to root:root. The software I want to install cannot be installed as root user.
So lets say I create a directory called /opt/install1 and then chown -R install1 to belong to user1. And now I install the software under /opt/install1 with user as user1.
Is this a best practice violation? There could potentially be just /opt/install1 belong to user1 and in future everything else created under /opt belonging to root..
