Where is this setting, so I can change it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Moving HD From Secondary To Primary?
Jan 18, 2010Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an older P4 system with EIDE harddrives. My primary HD has a WinXP installation and GRUB. Ubuntu is installed on the secondary HD.
I am happy enough running Ubuntu that I would like to remove my WinXP disk, move the disk with Ubuntu on it to be the primary boot drive, and then install a new drive as the secondary.
However when I tried to simply move the drive with Ubuntu on it from the secondary to the primary EIDE position the system would not boot. I assume that this is because there is no boot loader currently on that drive.
how do I put GRUB on the Ubuntu drive so that it can become the boot drive? Or is there some other way to accomplish what I am after without having to reinstall Ubuntu?
General :: SSD As Primary Or Secondary Drive On A Small Server?
Jun 6, 2010I'm pensioning off my 10-years-old home server and replacing it with an Ubuntu 10.04 box. The two storage devices are a Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB HD and an Intel X25-M 34nm Gen 2 80GB SATA II 2.5inch SSD (the box has 8GB RAM and an i5 750, if it matters).
I don't care much about boot times (since I don't plan to reboot all that often;-); the main frequent, performance-demanding task will be (re)building large open source C or C++ software packages from sources (as an open source contributor, I do that often).
So, I thought I'd keep the SSD as the secondary drive and the HD as the primary one, using the SSD mostly for the files that can otherwise demand a lot of seeking (esp. in a parallel make).
However, the friendly vendor (perhaps more experienced in Windows systems than in Linux ones) thinks the "normal" way to configure the machine would be with the SSD as the primary drive. I'm pretty rusty on configuring and tuning systems, so, I thought I'd better double check on SuperUser.

Mar 12, 2010I have an Ubuntu 9.10 machine with three ethernet interfaces, eth0, eth1 and eth2. eth2 is connected to a private network. eth0 and eth2 are connected to two different LANs. Either one will provide access to the internet. All three networks have DHCP servers. Using Ubuntu's the default settings (And Gnome), when I boot up all the interfaces are active and my system gets three IP addresses. However any attempt to access the internet results in connection timeouts and other weirdness.
I suspect that traffic is going out on one NIC (like eth0) and coming back in on another (like eth1). I'm not sure what's going on. The only way I can access the internet at the moment is to bring two of the devices down with ifdown. How can I configure eth0 as my primary interface so all trafic goes out by default on that interface, while keeping the other two active? Also, I want to make sure Avahi broadcasts properly on all three IPs so that the computers on the LAN of eth1 can still connect to myHostname.local...

I want the 172.16.30.2 network to be the primary one and the 10.1.0.0 network to be the secondary one. My nameservers are also incorrect. It seems like Ubuntu is bringing the networks up in order, eth0, then 1, then 2, and the DHCP information from eth1 is overriding eth0, and eth2 is overriding eth1. How can I reverse this so the DHCP information from eth0 is the "master"? This seems to be an issue with Gnome's NetworkManager.

Feb 9, 2010I have openSUSE 11.2 KDE with NVIDIA drivers. I have a TV on the left and a monitor on the right. In the Nvidia drivers this has also been setup as stated. The TV is on position 0:0 and the monitor is in position 1920:0. The monitor has been ticked in the drivers as the primary screen.
My problem is that all application open on the secondary screen and not the primary screen (monitor) as I expect. How to the OS/drivers that will ensure that application always open on the monitor situated on the right are welcome.

May 6, 2010We are really scratching our heads on this one.We moved 3 Dell PowerEdge servers with Fedora 12 x86_64 from one datacenter to another.2 of them are fine but the 3rd we cannot log into any more.The KDE login screen comes up,e user names are shown, but our passwords don't work.Going to the console, we cannot log in as root with the password either.Also, I set up shared keys for ssh between the 3 boxes so that I could ssh between machines without entering my password -- that doesn't work either. This one is one of the head scratchers since /home is on a different disk.I'm 1,600 miles away and the tech that went into the cage to try from the console does not know Linux. Dunno how he got picked...
What exactly would have been corrupted to cause this behavior -- unable to login locally AND ssh authorized_keys no longer works?Oh, and apparently they were initially able to get into the machine from the console after the move since they were able to configure the NICs. But now we can't.We know how we can get a root login on a reboot from GRUB, but we don't know what to look for as far as what might be wrong with the system once we're in

Nov 16, 2010I am an experienced Windows Server user/admin (over 12 years). I have touched Linux here and there and know my way around the "GUI" portion of it; which is not to say much.
In Windows I am not just a GUI guy and have been using script and command line since the DOS days.
I want to learn Linux Server internals just as I do in Windows Server. Most of the books/guides I find are geared toward moving windows desktop user to Linux. Most linux books that I have come across are not for porting your knowledge from Windows servers to linux but instead they start to teach you linux from abc and then I lose interest because I know the basics.
what I should start so that I can pick the right distro for a server, configure it to be a solid server and deploy/manage it appropriately? I plan to use this knowledge at customer sites instead of just at home.

Becuase old servers are not having enough free disk space & having very lower configuraion. So how to move cvs, git, svn repositories from old servers to new server. Dec 6, 2010I'm gonna set up a HA-cluster with the help of DRBD. I have installed DRBD and it's working on the Primary node, I synced them and formated it to ext3 and mounted it successfully on the Primary.
When I'm gonna mount it on the Secondary node it just tells me that I need to specify a filesystem.. so it looks like is hasn't been synced properly or something but both nodes are up to date.
This is my drbd.conf:

and could mount it without any problems on dbcluster1, but it doesn't work on dbcluster2.. according to the documentation and various howtos I'm suppose to be able to use it, mount it on both nodes etc. unless I've missed something.

Apr 12, 2010I have a secondary slave dns server setup, it has transferred all the records from the primary master.But when I run a few checks from outside using tools on the net it says:Tried to fetch SOA record for domain, but DNS server ns2.domain.com returned error code Refused.I disabled iptables, and tried again, same result. So I think it is something in the named.conf file? I appreciate any extra set of eyes on it. Just feel like I'm so close!

Server :: LVM Process - Adding Secondary HD As Logical Volume
Aug 3, 2009I have a CentOS 5 server with a 250gb hard drive running close to the maximum space on one of the partitions. 87% of 200gb (/home), roughly. I have a second 250gb hard drive which is completely unused. I just recently did some searching through the forums here and found out about LVM and wanted to implement it. Although the downside is I believe it has to wipe a drive/partition before it can add it as a logical volume.
The process I'm considering following is:
1. add this empty 250gb (SDB) secondary hard drive as a logical volume on LVM and copy everything over from the currently filling up partition on my main hard drive.
2. have LVM add in the old partition on the primary hard drive (SDA)
3. extend my logical volume out to include the old partition. Extending my total hard drive space out to 450gb.

CentOS 5 Server :: Can't Receive Emails - When Primary DNS Went Down ?
May 11, 2011I'm wondering why we can't received email when our primary DNS went down. We have slave DNS but don't know why we can't receive emails. Internet is working properly. The mail file in /etc/configuration on slave dns are there & the zone file is added. I edited the mail zone file to see if it works & restarted the named service. But still we can't received emails using the slave DNS. Do I need to reboot the server?

The internet works after that but when I reboot, that Primary DNS server gets deleted. I have to type it all the time and then click on save and then start using the internet again.

I have heard about TURNKEY PDC, but it uses Samba 3 and apparently doesn't handle Active Directory in Windows.

I have installed apache php5 mysql binarys. I have 3 ips on the machine 10.0.1.30, 10.0.1.37, 10.0.1.38. .30 is the main ip 10/100 the rest are 10,100,1000 ports. I can only access Apache 2.2 over .37 or .38 but not .30
