General :: Mount USB - "do Not Have Permissions Necessary To View The Contents Of Usbflash"

I made USB live and successfully mounted usb. Commands I used are shown below:
sudo fdisk -l
in response to the first command: sdb1 250GB(this is the target)
sudo mkdir /mnt/usbflash
sudo mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbflash
All done without any problems. However, when I tried to open file /mnt/usbflash, a dialogue jumps out says "do not have permissions neccessary to view the contents of usbflash". I googled it and found out someone solved this with Alt+F2 and type in 'gksu nautilus'. I tried, and it worked!!! However! Not single file of my 200GB files were shown there! How could it be?? I used comman "ls /mnt/usbflash" to check, and it shows correctly the files inside.
How come I can view the contents of the drive using Dolphin before I mount the device? I cannot see the contents using the bash shell until the device is mounted.
In trying to install an update, I deleted all the programs from my Ubuntu 9.10. Now I can not get my pictures, documents and music from the computer. I tried booting from a Ubuntu Live CD but when I get to the folder of my documents it says "you do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "My_Folder"". I tired the nautilus command but that only lets me view the files and not copy them.
I already had ubuntu 32 bit version 9.10. but due to some tool compatibility reason I need even the 64 bit version 9.10. I dint want to delete 32 bit version so I wanted to install both on my system. I have windows vista as well.
So I booted with 64 bit version of Ubuntu, went on with the installation, until the point were it asks to choose the partition. 32 bit version had 16GB allocated and 10GB free. so I thought I will make new 8GB partition from the 10GB free space. So I selected the partition and clicked on change, and specified 8GB and ext4 format and mount point as "/". I clicked on continue and in a few seconds it popped up with an ERROR message, which I can't remember exactly, but it meant to say that it could not make the changes as the disk to which the changes were made is in use. So I should not use it until I reboot. So I rebooted and now I have grub error : file not found and grub rescue> prompt.
I tried to boot with the 64 bit CD again with the option of trying ubuntu without making any changes and it does show the 16 GB partition, but when I mount that partition I do not see any folders in the partition except for a folder named "lost+found". I try to view the contents of this and it says I do not have the permissions.
You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "data". and the same error for the other partition "data 2" These 2 partitions are made with fedora 12.Screenshot.png - 689 KbBoth are ext3 filesistem.In file browser when i selecte one of these partitions, after it asks for the password the partition disappears from "places"
As the topic title states, I would like to know the preferred way of viewing the contents of a Berkeley DB file. The machine the file is on is running SuSE 9.3, with perl 5.8.6 and php 5.2.0 installed. (I'm not sure if stating that was necessary, but my understanding is that the more information I can provide you, the better. The purpose to this question is this: I have been requested to look into coming up with some form of Geocoding software for one of my company's clients. Specifically, I've been requested to look into trying to obtain Census tract/block information.
I discovered the Perl module Geo::Coder::US, which uses Census input (TIGERLine files) to create a Berkeley DB file, then reads said file to produce its own output. However, the output from Geo::Coder::US only provides latitude and longitude information.At the moment, my only interest is in popping the Berkeley DB file generated with the import script packaged with the Geo::Coder::US module. I'm trying to see what the contents of that DB file are, so I can determine if the information I'm after is even in there in the first place.
I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
I backed up about 19GB of my Web Server today compressed into a .tar.gz. I then split these files into 4300MB chunks (approx 4.2GB). I then used k3b to write 2 parts of the archive these to a Dual Layer DVD. The burn went fine but I cannot seem to mount said DVD. I tried the following;

After Days of trying to install Nagios, I eventually got everything working fine ! The only problem now is I get the following error message on the nagios web interface: "It appears as though you do not have permission to view information for any of the services you requested... If you believe this is an error, check the HTTP server authentication requirements for accessing this CGI and check the authorization options in your CGI configuration file."

Never used any of the office applications. I've attached the zip file and this is what the poster said...
In the actual spreadsheet though, there are two sheets. The first is all the raw data which you can order by position (based on me watching the games, and the line-ups listed on the AFL websites), K: H ratio, state etc. The second is a sheet which you can use to compare players.
I find that sometimes it is easier for me to make decisions about which players to pick when the stats are more obvious, so if you are the same, you can use this sheet as well. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the spreadsheet and I'll update it after each round. Fixed, I had to change the file from .zip to .xlsx
What command do I need to use to view the /casper/initrd.lz file on a live USB? Here's what I know about initrd.img in /boot on standard installations:

I am running Fedora 9 in virtual box on laptop. Want to set Fedora display size so that I will not have to scroll up or down or sideways to view screen contents. Have tried a couple of options such a resize box and change from full size but these do not help reduce size of Fedora display. Am wondering if it as something to do with the rectangular size of laptop monitor???
I'm trying to view directly a partition with a damaged filesystem on it (NTFS) and so far the hex editors I tried do not do that. I tried GHex for example and it complained that /dev/sda is not a file. The partition is unmountable as NTFS however since it is damaged so I couldn't mount it first. Are there any hex editors out there that would allow me to view the contents directly and copy and paste stuff in there?
I've created a new group and a new user called dftp... Now I wanna do one thing... If 'dftp' connects thru ftp he should be directed to a particular location... and he shouldn't be able to see other folder except for his own including the parent folder that contains that location... I changed dftp's home folder to the location I want. However while connecting thru ftp. user dftp has been given permissions to see other folders and check out the contents of the other folders.
Command used as root to mount a Windows 2003 server share to Linux Red Hat 4 x86-64 on Dell: mount -t smbfs -o username=user,workgroup=domain.edu,password=password //server.domain.edu/h$ /mnt/test The mount is successful, but only root can write to the mount. How do I set the permissions on the mount to allow certain users read/write access to the share? I am logged on the Linux server as the same user who authenticated the mount. The user can read write on the Windows server share, but not while loggged into the Linux server.
How can I mount a device with specific user rights on start up? I still have some problems figuring it out. I would like to mount the divide with uid=1000 and gid=1000. My current entry to the /etc/fstab/ file looks like this:
I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.

I have a debian machine with an external harddrive. I have a windows machine on the same network from which I can read the files from the debian drive, but I cant write to it. At some point in time (several months ago?) I could.
currently, I have this line in my /etc/fstab: /dev/sdb1 /media/MUSIC/ vfat user,uid=1000,gid=1000,rw,umask=000 0 0
and i've tried a hundred different mount commands (but not as many as i've tried fstab lines) but generally have been using this at start up: sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/MUSIC/ (i am under the impression that i should not have to use 'sudo' when doing this, since the fstab line includes 'user' but if i dont, the command fails)
no matter what I've tried, the permissions come out as owned by root: drwxr-xr-x 905 root root 163840 2010-10-17 17:45 Music attempting (as root) to change ownership of the directory also does not work: chown: changing ownership of `/media/MUSIC/': Operation not permitted (because its a FAT file system, i think)
On my Suse 11.1 computer, I'm only able to run 'mount' as root, but this screws up the permissions somehow, in that my external drives are now read only when I am normal user. I can plug my external drives to my mac osx laptop via usb or firewire, and I can read,write, and execute. As su, I can mount the drives using usb on my suse computer, but only as read only.
Optimally, I want to edit the fstab file to auto mount these external drives, and then have samba run to make the drives available (i.e. rw) on laptop.
NOTE: 1. I created the file systems on a laptop (mac osx) which has different user name than my suse 11.1 computer.
2. I tried to use chown to manually force user:group to be Mike:users instead of root:root, but the external drives still are 'read only.' Trying different options in column 4 fstab file kept giving same trouble, but I can now get user:group = 99: 99 (not sure what that means).
I have a problem with my external hdd, I mounted it manually and in the mount table it says ive got rw permissions. But when i try to change permissions it says:
chmod: changing permissions of `whatever': read-only filesystem.

This morning my NFS shares mount but permissions are all NOBODY NOBODY. If I ssh to the server to check the drive(s) permissions are all as they should be! Exports there are fine as is my local fstab. I hope I am just suffering and update glitch because they usually go-away in a subsequent update.
I just spent an hour and a half trying to track it down with no success - time to give up before I do real damage (to which I am prone ).
You know the great thing about having a debian system is that you have to reinstall so rarely you miss all the new changes that happen in the system until you have to do something like install a new piece of software and realize that fstab has been turned into spaghetti and you no longer have the slightest idea what is going on.I just got a new 1TB USB2 drive to use for backups. I plugged in it and it was recognized fine but it was formatted in NTFS which I didn't particularly want so I reformatted it as ext4FS. It automounts fine but only with all permissions set to root. I tried doing a direct chmod on the drive but that wasn't recognized. Where in the hodgepodge of HAL settings and whatnot do I set it to make the drive user accessible and mount to somewhere other than /media/disk?
Ubuntu 9.10. I have a problem - when I mount other partitions of my hdd or the system automounts usb disks these are mounted in /media directory with permissions 0700. So there are two problems there: - When I switch user on my desktop to another that user can't read data from the usb disks - I can't share data through network because smbd doesnot have read permissions on the created mount points
I think editing /etc/fstab is wrong way, there would be more right way to change permissions on mount point. I tried to change/add parameters umask, allow_other in gconf-editor (/system/storage/default_options, subsections vfat and ntfs-3g) but that does not show any results. Article [URL] recommends Open Places → Computer. Every volume except the generic File system one should have a Drive and Volume tab in its properties dialog where you can set mount options. But I did not find those tabs. Where should I set option to mount usb disks with permissions rwx for every user of my system?
I am running Karmic x64 on a HP laptop that has a cd/dvd burner. I have a r/w cd with files on it and I wish to add/remove files to it. After it mounts automatically on insertion, I unmount it and remount with: sudo mount /dev/sr0 -t iso9660 -w /media/cdrom (I tried assorted other hare-brained things also) but it always says that the filesystem is read only. Do I need to use a different device than sr0? Is it even possible under Ubuntu?
The issue I am having is that Virtual Box does not recognize my USB drives. I understand that it is related to the fact that Ubuntu cannot recognize the permissions on the USB NTFS drive. So how do I mount the ntfs drive and gain full permissions?
One post suggested that I have to join my user to the 'vbuser' group in users and groups to fix this in 9.04, but I do not have a "vbuser" group in my list of groups. I am running 10.04.
