View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed debian squeeze on an old computer that I found. (Pentium 4 3.2GHz HT) I installed from the i386 version, but now the uname command shows that its an i686. I don't find many packages that I need using apt-get. Do I need to compile each package I need from source or use dpkg to install the deb of an i386 version?
Can I use the i386 version on this computer rather than the i686 version? Will it cause a signifncant performance decreaes? (I use this computer to mostly do some reading and writing and file storage, no gaming etc.) How do I force the installer to use the i386 version?

I have a recent install of squeeze. Beside applications from the squeeze repos, I have installed a few applications from their own deb files / repositories, such as Skype, Google-Chrome (not the chromium in the squeeze repos), Opera and Teamviewer.
All those placed their menu entries in the gnome menu, however periodically, at a new login, the Google-Chrome and Teamviewer menu items are missing. The applications are still there, but they dont show anymore in the menus. Only way to get them back I found so far is to reinstall the application.
I've just finished an upgrade from debian lenny to squeeze.But when I tried to log into my Gnome session the menu and the taskbar was missing and when i click on change desktop preferences nothing happen and i m not able to run anny command as well (alt+f2). The upgrading process went good i think and i dont know what i did wrong

I have had a good look and cant get it to solve these dependencies. Has anyone else tried and got this working?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on an IBM ThinkCentre. I have earlier had a dual boot Win 8 and Ubuntu 14.04 installed on the computer. When I installed Debian Jessie, I deleted the Ubuntu partitions and created new partitions from the free space. The install went fine and the Debian EFI/UEFI version of Grub was installed, but clearly at some other place, as when I boot the system, the old Ubuntu Grub pops up and of course cannot find the necessary files that it is looking for.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and I ve installed Jessie with KDE desktop.Everything's fine !!!!! but sometimes when I use webbrowsers the systray with KDE menustart is going off and missing.After that I can't switch window to window and can't minimize or resize the actual activity, without or with hotkeys either can't close the window, and these option bars ar missing too.I always do restart but I ve had enough. It is very irritating.Also I have tried to switch user logons with Alt Ctrl Fxx and start another graphic array with startx and it has worked fine but that's not the right way I think!!!!

I have a dell mini 10v with ubuntu. I have been trying reapteadly to try to get the ubutnu version of mana world on my laptop but it always says its missing a newline. Because i download the game from my synapic manager and it says its missing final newline.

I liked having it there- I can access that folder through "home folder" but it was nice having it where I could get to it with just one click. How can I get it back? (There is no option to edit the places menu in the "edit menus" thingie)
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe menu bar - and pretty much everything else on my desktop - has disappeared after I let the system update itself.
Only the bar at the bottom is still there, and I can't start any applications, not even a terminal. No icons, no background, no anything (I got Firefox running by clicking on a link in the About KDE menu item in the task manager, which i started with ctrl-alt-del)
During the update the system just restarted, and afterwards it was like that.
How do I get it to work again?
I am in the process of learning Mint, but need help with a missing Menu and task bar. I have obviously deleted something, but have no idea what.Terminal is a problem, as it does not appear correctly but enlarged and incomplete.I do have a dock, with a number of icons and an application icon.

im trying to install ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386 version, but i simply cant do it! I have tried for hours now. I boot my computer, the cd-room boots, i choose language from the list and press install ubuntu, after that i see the ubuntu logo blinking and in few minutes it gets black and shows "Input Not Supported" and its just bumping around the screen! I had a feeling that maybe my monitor (ASUS) does not support ubuntu so i tried with a very old syncmaster monitor, but similar message appeared! What could be the problem?

I just installed debian lenny KDE 5.5, when installing the screen was busy at 100% but when I first loggin in, at least I Had 75% of screen resolution. less than 102x768. What can I do? this new serie resoletion screen but the system allows me to be in graphical mode. To be clear, the system gives me at least 800x400. i'm using Toshiba Tecra M1 with a standard vga graphic adapter
View 18 Replies View RelatedI'm using my Debian installation for a long time (~10 years) and my system is evolved to fit my tastes, usage habits and hardware setup. However, this system started on 32bit hardware and It's having some major limitations (both performance and coping with the hardware) on a 64bit system with 16GB RAM.
I've read the cross grading manuals on the network and they don't feel like firmly tested and the best ways to do it. I'm perfectly capable of anything, minimum downtime is essential since this is my primary workstation and I need it for many daily (light and heavy) tasks.
I was able to go online yesterday using Ubuntu, but now I cannot. For some reason, when I ping an address, like [URL], it tells me this: ping: unknown host [URL]
I looked at ifconfig by typing it into the terminal prompt, and this is what I get:

Previously I had setup 2 Snapstream remotes using ubuntu 7.10, see the following url: [URL] The issue I'm having is a file no longer exists (/etc/modprobe.d/aliases). This file allowed for the id setup for each remote. I searched for the file but could not find it. Can someone lead me to it or another file that will serve the same purpose?
View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalled Debian 6 (latest stable, downloaded today) i386 under VMWare 7.1. Installed VMWare tools. However, when i activate Unity my mouse won't work at all in guest OS windows, it will only work as if i was pointing to guest desktop. It is all ok in Workstation window.
Unfortunately, there is no xorg.conf, and when i attempt to re-create it using Xorg -configure, the resulting file is unusable, i.e. system freezes when i test it (using X -config /root/xorg.conf.new) and if i just cp into /etc/X11/ GDM fails to load, and manually typing startX in command prompt i get "fatal error no screens detected".
