I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I installed it a few days ago.
When I open Synaptic Package Manager, it asks for admin password. But, after I give the password, the window vanishes. Thus, I am not able to open Synaptic Package Manager in non-admin account.

I'm running 5.2, mostly updated. I've got a user account that is really only used by some clients (Polycom phones) to log into vsftpd. Once every few days or so, the password on the account changes to something other than what I've specified, and I can't figure out why. The other user accounts on the system don't seem to be affected, though none of the other accounts are used by/for vsftpd.
chage shows that the account password should never expire, so I don't think that's what's happening. I'm wondering if VSFTPD is just not playing nicely with PAM. Is there a way to explicitly prevent vsftp from changing a user password? I can't seem to find anything like this.I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but the system is clustered using heartbeat/drbd. The users are unique to each of the nodes in the cluster, though, so I don't think this should really have any effect.

OK, I'm not really a newbie, but I definitely no expert either.I've been surfing the web trying to find a good tutorial on locking out users after three failed logon attempts. At present I've reset everything in the /etc/pam.d directory back to the default state. This sets up all my password requirements and this works. Now I need to crack getting the account to lockout after three failed attempts. Let me know what files you need to see in the pam.d directory and I'll paste them in.

I try to configure account lock out after 5 failed connections attempt with help of PAM. I add the following string to /etc/pam.d/login:account required pam_tally.so per_user deny=5 ulock_time=180 no_magic_root reset.Unfortunatly this solution doesn`t work. Can you give me advice how to set 5 connection attempt, block user and unlock account after 180 seconds?

I'm trying to lock an account after a number of failed login attempts in a RHEL5.
This is the relevant configuration in /etc/pam.d/system-auth
In the logs I can see how the count of failed logins increase and exceeds my deny option but the account isn't locked
Do I need any other option in the PAM file? Is there any other way to lock an account?

Is there a way to set Linux to automatically log in to a specific user account and at the same time lock the screen? I want to save time and trigger various software that always should start up on boot, while leaving the computer unattended during startup (extra important and practical for remote control boots), by enforcing a 'screen lock' so that no-one can see what happens behind the login screen without entering the login credentials.

I have two networks on a server. One being my internal network, and the other being an external IP address. This is on Debian Lenny. Here is my /etc/network/interfaces file:
I can reboot my system and sometimes eth1 is accessible from SSH, and other times eth0 is accessible. Then sometimes eth1 will just stop being pingable alltogether. This is a fairly fresh install of Debian, and the only thing I have running is VMWare Server 2.0, bridged to both of my network connections.
Here is what my route looks like:

With the find command it is easy to find files that have been modified or accessed within a given period. When a file is created, the acesss time is the same as the modify time. But as soon it is accessed (read), the access time changes, but the modify time does not. I need to find files that been accessed at all, ie. files which have access time newer than modify time. How do I do that?

I'm looking to find out how many times a file has been displayed on the web. I've setup Google Analytics link tracking but I'm trying to figure out how many times BEFORE Google analytics was setup people clicked and viewed a pdf file.
Is there a script that I could run through the log files to find out how many times it has been served?

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.
