Fedora :: Share Files Across Network Segments?

Nov 1, 2009

I'm trying to setup file sharing between computer A and computer B on the following diagram.

The green waves denote a wireless connection. The black lines are standard cat5. The grey lines are what happens via the electrical lines in the house.

I labelled them, "There be Dragons here..." since something odd happens that prevented the PS3 from connecting when attached directly, or through a switch, to these adapters. Computers attached to the same connection had dns problems, but manually setting the dns servers resolved the issue for them.

This same approach did not help with the PS3. Installing the router resolved the issue for both computers without manual dns's and the PS3.

So, any ideas how to get this working? I've looked through a few file sharing guides between fedora systems and none of them I can find mention setting anything up across network segments. Both systems are running fedora 11.

Fedora Networking :: Network Share Files With Windows ?

Sep 1, 2011

I am trying to both access files shared by Windows machines on my network, and I also want to share files on my Fedora 15 box. In Nautilus, if I choose the 'Browse Network' option on the left toolbar, I am shown a Windows Network icon. If I try to double click this, I am given an "Unable to mount location" error. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Further, where is the GNOME 3 option to right click and choose to share a folder? Both KDE 4.5/4.6 and older versions of GNOME (at least on Ubuntu) had this. Is there a way to share files this way, and if not, is there some workaround?

I did manage to set up 2 machines both running Ubuntu with file sharing but now I have switched one to SUSE I seem to be getting into a mess. Ubuntu sees the SUSE machine but does not open any folders. SUS does NOT see the Ubutu machine. I have looked for a beginners guide to setting up file shaing with SUSE without success. (I like SUSE better because I can use my Audiophile sound card "out of the box")

Debian Multimedia :: Possible To Burn Files From Network Share?

Jan 7, 2011

I'm trying to burn a DVD using k3b, and would like to access files from a shared network drive from a Windows machine. I can see the files in Nautilus from "Network Servers" and drilling down to the right directory, I can open the files no problem, but I can't get k3b to recognise them.

Firstly I can't navigate to the network drive from the file tree on the left in K3b.

If I drag and drop the files from Nautilus into k3b, it says "Problems while adding files to the project: No non-local files supported".

If I use Project -> Add Files I can then get to the network drives, but when I select and add the files it says "Remote files not accepted - You can only select local files".

In the end I had to copy all the files using Nautilus from the network share onto a USB stick, burn the DVD and then delete the files again. (I used the USB stick just to see if that counted as more "local" than a network share). Was there an easier / more efficient way to do this that I missed?

Networking :: Can't Delete Files Graphically On Network Share

There is a test/development environment here at work with some windows and some CentOS systems connecting over a network share to a CentOS fileserver in the data center. The developers run as root (i know i know, but the environment is completely cut off from the rest of the company and this just worked best) and connect to the fileserver using samba. I tried using nfs but to no avail. Now, a couple of the developers have no issues with permissions at all but a couple of them are not able to delete files or folders in their network share graphically. They can through terminal though.

Someone mentioned "Samba" to me and it looks like it's installed on the VM, or at least I see files and folders on the VM containing "samba" in their names. So how do I use it for sharing? Are there other approaches?

Ubuntu Security :: Configure The Share And Folder So That The Win7 Client Can Create Files And/or Folders In The Share?

Jan 15, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Samba 3.4. I've shared a folder and have accessed the share from a Windows 7 client. However, I've struggled to configure the share and folder so that the Win7 client can create files and/or folders in the share. Kept getting Permission Denied errors. Finally, (using Webmin) I set the permissions on the file folder so that "Other" had write access. I don't understand why this was necessary (and how unsecure this is). I already had the write access checkbox ticked for "User" but it wasn't enough.

Ubuntu :: Share Files And Folders But It Does Not Allow To Select Share Folder

Sep 20, 2010

1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.

I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?

So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?

Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?

I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.

General :: Share Files Between 2 Fedora 14 Computers

May 8, 2011

Networking Problem Fedora 14 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.i686. I am trying to share files between 2 Fedora 14 computers , a desktop and a laptop, both located on my local DSL server. The laptop sees its public files and the public files folder on the desktop computer - looks fine. The desktop computer acts differently. Both systems show an entry of "unknown type" in the directory listing, for the public files directory. But whereas a right click on the directory entry on the laptop offers "open" the same operation on the desktop computer offers "open gedit". When I double click the entries on the laptop, entries appear on the main screen. If I double click the entries on the main screen, the directory contents are displayed. But, if I doubleclick the directory entries on the desktop computer 1- I get a black box that says there has been a crash in gvfs-1.6.6-1.fc14 and an error message box tells me Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.ERROR.NoReply: Message did not received a reply.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Adding Third Drive Keeping Share Under Var Files

Aug 7, 2010

I am just starting out in linux and am a little confused about mounting drives. On my fedora pc, I have 2 x hard drives. When I originally installed the os, I had 1 drive with the default partitioning. I placed all my data into /var/files and had various folders under there e.g. music, video, docs etc. It didn't take long for this to fill up. So I added a 2nd drive and mounted it as /var/files which increased the space for all the folders in that directory. So my fstab has:
sda1 /
sdb1 /var/files

Now its filling up again and I want to add a 3rd drive. But this time, I want to separate my music from my video's etc but still keep the share under /var/files. So, do I add the 3rd drive, mount it as /var/files/music1, then transfer the music files from /var/files/music to /var/files/music1 and once the transfer is complete, delete /var/files/music, rename /var/files/music1 to /var/files/music and then mount sdc1 to/var/files/music? The bit I can't get my head around is the mount within a mount:
sdb1 /var/files is mounting everything under it including /music
If I add sdc1 /var/files/music how does it affect the mount point of sdb1
Am I better putting the /music under /var/music instead of /var/files?

Fedora :: Broken Symbolic Link Within A Network Share

On the server there is a symbolic link /raid/shared.windows/dir that points to /raid/dir

The problem is that this link is broken when the viewed from the mount point on the other PC.

Is it possible that the link is trying to look at /raid/dir on the other PC, rather then on the server?

If so how do I fix it, such that the symbolic link is linked to the right directory on the server?
