General :: Links Don't Work After Mount

Jul 26, 2010

I have a local installation of ubuntu 10.4 on my PC. I mount the home of our lab server using mount server:/home /mnt/home/. I can then access the files on the server (I had to change my local UID to match the one assigned to me on our server in order to be able to write to my home dir). The problem is all the (symbolic) links I have on the server don't work when I access them through the mounted location. I guess the system simply tries following the link in my local /home instead on server:/home. Is there a way to make the links work?

General :: Links Don't Work After Mount?

Jul 26, 2010

I work in a lab when all the guys use PCs with Windows and access the lab linux servers via ssh.

I prefer linux, so I have a local installation of ubuntu 10.4 on my PC.

General :: Cannot Get Links To Work From Internal Webpage

Jun 6, 2011

I just setup my first Linux box using [URL] everything went along fine except now I have a problem that I cannot seem to solve. I've set up a webpage on the box for my company's intra-net for testing purposes but I cannot get the links to work. On the server itself all the links work but Firefox still ask me to authenticate with the Adobe Flashplayer (player10), but when I access the page from another computer I have the following issues:-

1. Even though hostname -f shows the a fully qualified domain name I have to use the IP Address eg. 192.168.100.100
2. I can access the page but the links leading to the other pages do not work I get "Webpage cannot be found or the HTTP 404 Not Found" Error Message
3. None of the embedded pictures show up I get the red X.

General :: Symbolic Links Between User Accounts - Cannot Get To Work

Jan 7, 2011

I have been using a cron job to duplicate a folder into another users account every day and someone suggested using symbolic links instead although I cannot get them to work. In summary user GAMER generates log files that they want to access via HTTP, however I only have a web-server in the user account SERVER, in the past I would copy the logs folder from GAMERS account into SERVER/public_html/. and then chmod the files so the server could access them. Trying to use symbolic links I set up a link from root (as only root can access both accounts) I used: ln -s /home/GAMER/game/logs/ /home/SERVER/public_html/logs

However it seems that only root can use this link, I tried chmoding the link, all the files in the gamers /game/logs/*, /game/logs itself to 777 as well as changing chown and chgrp to server the files still cannot be read. When viewed from servers account my shell shows the link and where it is to hi-lighted in black with red text. /home/GAMER/game/ (chmod & chgrp) drwxrwxrwx 3 SERVER SERVER 4096 2011-01-07 15:46 logs
/home/SERVER/public_html (chmod -h & chgrp -h)

Ubuntu Servers :: Vsftpd: Symbolic Links Or Mount Bind?

May 21, 2010

I'm setting up an ftp server with lucid server. A lot of the folders that should be accessible via the ftp are in different directories (and can't be moved without a LOT of hazzle) and I have to either symlink or mount bind them to the ftp chroot dir. Now I'm wondering which one is the saver variant? My guess is mount bind, but I'm not that familiar with the internal workings of linux and vsftpd (plus for symlinks I wouldn't have to change/create any scripts, just create them once...),

Ubuntu Networking :: NFS Mount Produced Circular Links On Urix?

Jun 20, 2011

I was setting up an Ubuntu server for a client who runs a rather old version of Irix on an SGI O2 machine (he uses some design software that does not run on newer hardware). This version of Irix can only use NFS V2 or V3, so I setup the exports file on Ubuntu to use nfs3. However, when the file system was mounted on Irix, everything (including flat text files) was mounted as a directory, i.e. everything in the Ubuntu directory was mounted as a circular link to its' self After _much_ faffing about, I found that using nfs2 in the exports file fixed the problem, and the client was a happy camper again.

Software :: Can't Seem To Get Javascript To Work In Links

Feb 26, 2010

I can't seem to get javascript to work in links. According to the documentation, there should be an entry in the setup menu for javascript options, and I don't even have that. I'm using slackware 13, and it came with links 2.2. I thought maybe it wasn't installed with javascript support, so I downloaded the source (2.3pre1) and reinstalled it:but still no javascript options in the menu.. and I verified that I was running the new version.

Fedora :: Some Links On A Website Don't Work In Firefox?

Apr 29, 2010

Recently Firefox is showing some but not all the links inside a page in a website that I use every day.Firefox had worked well in the past years with this site, so I made a few tests:- I tested the web page on Firefox 3.5.9 on Fedora 12. Some links missing.- I tested the same web page on IE8 on Windows Vista. No issues, all links there.- I tested the same web page downgrading Firefox to version 3.5.4 and downgrading the required libraries. Same issue, some links missing.- I compared the html code that the web server hands to both IE8 and Firefox. They are exactly the same.I don't know enough about html or javascript to understand why Firefox doesn't like some of this code portion.

Code:
<td align='left'>

Ubuntu :: Resources Links Don't Work Any Longer?

Oct 23, 2010

Since I've moved the /home directory to a new mountpoint

(UUID=160b687f-3e30-472e-97c2-7fd6149ec2a0 /home ext4 nodev,nosuid 0 2 in the fstab menu)

I have troubles with the links on the places menu. all the links there that point to /home or to one of its subdirectories don't work any longer.

The links to usb drivers and other places work just fine.

I've tried reinstalling xdg and gnome-menu, but no success.

if I do cat .xsession-errors right after trying to click on one of the links in the menu this is what I see:

giulio@giulio:~$ cat .xsession-errors
...
/home/giulio: /home/giulio: is a directory

Ubuntu :: [10.04] Links In Firefox Don't Work Until Move Mouse

May 4, 2010

It appears that clicking on a link in Firefox doesn't work until you move the mouse, i.e. if I put the mouse on a link and hold it stationary and click the link, nothing happens, but as soon as I move the mouse, the link then activates. Sometimes, I have to double click the link to get it to work. I've read some posts where people claim that Firefox "freezes" until you move the mouse. In my case, Firefox doesn't "freeze" in the traditional sense. It just that clicking a link doesn't behave properly as it should. I didn't have this problem in 8.04LTS (or previous distributions for that matter) only in 10.04LTS. I'm running the 32-bit version on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop with nvidia-common driver 0.2.23.

Red Hat / Fedora :: HTTP Links In Thunderbird Doesn't Work

after updating to fedora 15, the http links in Thunderbird doesn't work.I have tried many solutions, but without result.
- in prefs.js add :user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp", "/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http", "/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https", "/usr/bin/firefox");- I have tried it with KDE and GNOME.
- move .thunderbird to .thunderbird.backup and reopen thunderbird. But still same problem.
- When I create a new user it works correctly! So I think it must be related to the update.
- I also change the default application (in System Settings) to google-chrome and Opera. But no result.
- http-links in other application (dolphin, nautilus, ...) works correctly

Ubuntu :: Links Browser Script - Automatically Fills In The Credentials On The Links Login Page?

Dec 6, 2010

At my Uni, we use a web-based login for our internet connections. Its based off of Cisco, and every Wednesday night every computer on campus must re-enter their credentials to use the network.

Normally on my several computers I simply pull up the Terminal, point links to google.com using

Code:

And enter my credentials when Cisco redirects to the login page.

Literally, the process is

Code:

Then ENTER to accept the redirect, down arrow to skip over the logo image, USERNAME, ENTER, PASSWORD, ENTER, ENTER.

Naturally, this is EXTREMELY time consuming, as I have about 5 computers located around campus and must physically walk to the machines and login every single week.

My question is, How would I formulate a program that does the following;

1) checks for connectivity (i.e. is able to reach/resolve to the greater part of the internet) and

2) automatically fills in the credentials on the links login page?

Programming :: Scripting : Change Markdown Links To Wikitext Links?

Feb 3, 2009

I have a personal wiki of notes, with now thousands of links in markdown format:

[link text](http://example.com)

but now that fckeditor is available for mediawiki (very beta), it has become much better to just stick with wikitext format. There are only a few conversions to do: tables, links, and bulleted lists. The lists are a fairly simple regex and fckeditor magically reformats the tables, so all I'm left with is the links. But I'm not a regex master. How do I reformat code...

General :: Can't Get Mount To Work In /etc/init.d/rc.local Or Fstab

Jul 10, 2010

I'm running XBMC media center which is built on Ubuntu and I'm trying to mount a network share, but I can't seem to automate it. If I manually run:

Code:

mount -t cifs -o file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 //192.168.1.20/disk7/xbmc_thumbs/Thumbnails /home/kevin/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails

The mount is created and everything works fine. But obviously the mount eill be lost on the next boot. A few months back, when I was running a previous version of XBMC and first instructed on how to do this, I was told to put that command in /etc/init.d/rc.local so the mount would automatically be created at boot. I did and it worked. The other day I upgraded to a new XBMC build (which is built on the newer Lucid Ubuntu) and while the same command creates the mount, putting it in /etc/init.d/rc.local does not create it on boot. Someone suggested the fstab was the better place to create the mount. So I inserted the following in /etc/fstab:

Code:

//192.168.1.20/disk7/XBMC_thumbs/Thumbnails /home/kevin/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails cifs file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0

That doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I get this mount auto-created on boot?

copy all symlinks

i want to copy all symlinks (both active and dead) from one partition's os's user's home directory, to another partition's os's user's home directory, and i'm wondering if this can be accomplished with some clever bash options and pipes after "cp".

this is very useful for users with multiboot systems, who keep all their data on a separate drive. this would allow the symlink'ed shortcut tree directory hierarchy expedience, to be instantly copyable to any of their oses.

distro-hoppers/surfers will love it. ^_^

so here goes my first attempt at trying to work out what it'd be...

cp -P
(copy, dont follow symbolic links)
(or is it -d i aught use?)
find /% -type l
(finds symbolic links only
