In Windows Word there are combination key strokes to get language accents inserted in the text. How do you get the same thing in Office? I am trying to use foreign phrases in an English document.
View 2 RepliesSome time back I posted a question about using a Greek keyboard since I'm trying to improve my limited Greek. Someone suggested a way of switching between the English and Greek desktop for Ubuntu. I tried that but it didn't work so well so I removed it. But I just tried to use the Terminal to install something and it's all in Greek!!! Now while I can read some of it my skills are not that good and I need it back in English again... Quickly actually! How do I go about removing the Greek from my terminal? Everything else on my system is in English so I can't figure why the terminal is stuck there.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI only want spellchecking, calendar and currency to be typical for Poland (this is where I currently live), Ubuntu itself (interface, applications, manuals) should be in English - I don't understand Polish well enough.In 9.10 I used to check Polish spellchecking (translations were checked for install automatically but you couldn't tell unless you chose another language and then Polish again) and uncheck the translations. It allowed for setting locale (calendar/currency) to Polish and also keep the spellchecking. Now it's buggy: I can do a fresh install of Ubuntu but can't set Polish spellchecking, calendar (it starts from Monday), currency (it's PLN/zł) and keep the system itself in English. What I do wrong?
1. Fresh install
2. System -> Administration -> Language Support
3. Language -> Install / Remove Languages
4. Find Polish and select ONLY: Spellchecking and writing aids
5. Text -> Display numbers, dates and currency amounts in: Polish
Confirm, reboot and... Bump! I've got Polish translations in several places, e.g.:If I upgrade any software, it is in Polish. Firefox (or Namoroka) locale changes to "pl,en" and its plug-ins are in Polish by default.
After I uninstall Polish translations (and leave spellchecking and writing aids as it was) there's a problem with locale (Polish locale is removed along with translations), besides, system doesn't actually change back to English and newly installed applications either crash with errors or install in Polish.
I have this cool bash script that I worked hard on. But it broke down when it can across files that had non-English characters. Another small problem was getting it to descend into a directory. If it renamed a directory it would not descend into that dir to rename the other files. I would have to run the script twice on the same directory.

Why would the script not descend into a directory after it was renamed?
this always happen when i do a fresh install of openoffice always forget to save the language pack for the interface... can somebody tell me where the heck are they? i've found the dictionaries but those don't change the interface

I would like to know if i can do this only on the desktop fonts, since everything else looks fine.
I know it's really a hell of a lot easier to just change my wallpaper ( or edit it in GIMP ) but my moto on Linux has always been "If it can be done, why don't do it" ( I hope is sounds good in English too )

I also have difficulty when using a mouse of moving the mouse as I select something (click the button) from whatever window I am working with and thereby selecting the wrong thing. To compensate for this difficulty, I use a Logitech trackball and program the center button to perform a double click with one stroke. I am currently struggling with Linux Mint 9 in my search for a Windows alternative. Is there any way to program my center button (scroll wheel) to perform a double click in this or any other Linux version? Alternatively, is there any way to program a keyboard key to perform a double mouse click with a single stroke? I do not want any multiple key combinations for this operation, I want something that works with a single click of one button.

(i am french and wanted a light netbook with french keyboard)i am totally new to linux and i believe that msi wind is not helping.because i am more used to english for settings, i set the main language to english, but it seems that it automatically reconfigures my keyboard mapping to english as well, so that azerty becomes qwerty.i reset it back to french, so now my keyboard is french, but so is the system.is there a way to differentiate keyboard from main user setting language?

The windows server which is dropping files into it is able to make the file visible but the app running on the linux can't fetch it because the name is 'unexpected'if I create a file anywhere else e.g. in /tmp/ with the name response.txt it is fine. When I ls I see r?sponse.Can you advise me if I should be looking at the smb config AND the host config and give me some pointers as to where to get started trying to solve this.

i know it's possible to have different users with each a mouse, keyboard and screen work on one machine at the same time with different user accounts. My questions is, how can i make possible a setup where i have two distinct sets of physical i/o on my computer, but nevertheless work in the same X session with virtual desktops.For each set of input/output devices i would like to have an own activation (e.g. when i click on a window with mouse A, the window will be focused on screen A, but the focus on screen B must not change (unless i steal a window from B or both displays show the same virtual desktop))

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get all french accents to work in gentoo, so far everything works fine when in X/gnome, i type "setxkbmap ca" to load the french canadian keys and i'm able to type etc... however when I switch to TTY console mode (ctrl-alt-F2 for example), i am only able to obtain and none of the others like etc...
I know that in TTY the command loadkeys is responsible for the character set and does not affect gnome in X which leads me to believe I need to fiddle with loadkeys command, however I tried all instances of the french keymaps found in /usr/share/keymaps/i386/ by issuing "loadkeys fr","loadkeys fr-latin1", etc.. I tried them all, one of them was able to give me the accents I'm missing but didnt correspond to the keys on my keyboard (microsoft wired 500 series)..
my locales are set according to the gentoo localisation guide, echo $LANG outputs en_US.UTF-8 because I wish to keep my system prompts in english (I also tried setting to to french without success in the accents)
kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware).Some OSs offer the facility of "English with accents" for one to type in the keyboard (kb) and have the accentuated chars echoed to the screen, as well in the physical text consoles (ttyN) as in the GUI. My kb is set for US English. How could I do to make it an English with accents kb?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can use the accents (tilde, acute, ...) normally when I am the root, but when I log into my user account they re not recognized in most applications (opera, emacs, amsn, python idle,...) although they work in other applications (terminal, vim, iceweasel...). I guess that would have a simple solution. Something is right in the root account and wrong in my user account, but I cant figure it out. My layout is USA International (with dead keys).

Mainly, the accents (etc) don't work (they come 'a'e'o), and that's important for me.It happens unexpectedly; at least I have not been able to put it in relation with something I did (anyway, it had never happened before).In Personal settings -> Input Devices -> keyboard everything looks normal, nothing changed.I don't know where to begin to find a solution. The only thing I can do now is to reboot.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just found out this isn't OpenSuse exclusive, but I noticed it when setting up OpenSuse 11.4 on a laptop.The WPA password in question has an accented vowel (ã) which is making both my Linux laptops (a KDE and a Gnome one) fail to connect. My wife's Win7 laptop has no problem with it. If I change the letter from ã to a, then they connect.Is there a way to configure the Networkmanagers so that they accept these special characters?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have some music in another language, but when I open the songs in Banshee, their song names just come up as weird characters (like μ).I went to [System --> Administration --> Language Support] and installed support for that language, but the songs still come up like μ. (But in Nautilus, their proper names show).
I know the solution is to change my whole system language to that language, but I don't want to do that, as I am not very fluent in it. Is there any way to enable support for that language while keeping English as the language used to display my desktop?
One computer .... three users .... three languages. How do you make that happen? User A speaks English and is happy with English. No problem. User B needs to use Chinese and would like the full system in Chinese. User C needs to use Thai and Chinese. They would prefer their menus to be in Thai and can use iBus for Chinese entry. How do you set up the system so that each user can select their system language when they login?

Opening in kate, no matter the encoding, messes up the characters. They turn to (a '?' in a hexagone) or chinese characters!What's the proper procedure to open and save those files properly in kate ?

I have a bash script that reads URL addresses of our internal server and then executes some test commands on them. Something like this:

After copy-pasting the URL the user taps the enter key and the script proceeds, but here comes the tricky part: I want this to work without the need to press the enter key after copy-pasting the URL.
"read -n" does not work in this case, as the URLs vary greatly in length. However, the URLs always end to the same string. They could be like "http://url1/END", "http://url2/END" and so on. So this ending string "END" could be theoretically used to recognize that the whole URL has been pasted.
While installing Ubuntu 10.10 I chose the wrong language for my keyboard. I tried to fix this in keyboard preferences and it seemed to work. The correct one I need is USA (and don't know exactly the difference between USA and USA alternative international). But every time I boot my laptop I get the old language back (Dutch) while USA is above the others in my preferences.

View 2 Replies View Relatedwe have two work computers, one with windows and one with Ubuntu. We are going to change the windows computer to Ubuntu, and put them on a network. So we copied all of the documents on the windows computer to the Ubuntu computer as a first step. The problem is, with the documents and folders that we copied, if they have spanish accents we can't open them.I tried looking on the forum but I didn't find anything about exactly that problem. One post suggested that the "locale" might be the problem, but our locale seems to be the correct one for our country and language.
The accents show up as white question marks inside a black diamond. If I open a file inside a folder with an accent, or a file with an accent, it tells me that the file doesn't exist.But when I change the name of the containing folder or the file, and replace the question marks with accents, I can open the folders and files.But we have lots and lots of documents, and it would take a really long time to change the name of all of the folders and files. How can I fix all of them at the same time?
