I've just installed FC 13 and trying to get Real Player installed. After downloading it from Real installing it gives this error
rpm -ivh RealPlayer11GOLD.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:realplay ########################################### [100%]
postinst called with unknown argument `2'
warning: %post(realplay-11.0.2.1744-1.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
Then it thinks it's installed because it doesn't install again have to force it the second time. Can't remove it though because that doesn't think it's there.

I just installed Fedora 11 on my Sony Vaio laptop. I couldn't stand Windows Vista any longer. I installed Fedora 11 just fine with no issues. But I seem to be having trouble installing programs such as Adobe Flash Player, Reader, Limewire, Java pluggin, etc. Everytime I try to install these, it says for example "Could not display "/home/blackout87gn/Download/jre-6u16-linux-i586-rpm.bin". This was for the Java file I downloaded. I made sure that all these files I downloaded were for Linux. So being the newb that I am, can someone point me in the right direction on how to install these applications? Also what does .rpm .bin .deb and .tar.gz represent?

I have barebones Debian Lenny, with bare bones Gnome Desktop. I'm using IceWeasel for a browser. I have downloaded the file install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz. from the Adobe website. I have unpacked (I guess) the file using the command
tar -zxvpf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
Now according to the instructions at Adobe - Flash Player 10: Installation instructions
It should be unpacked to a directory with an installer that can be run, but all I get is a single file called libflashplayer.so, and I haven't a clue what to do with it. .so is like a .dll file I guess. IceWeasel has a built in service that installs plugins, but this failed with flash.

i have recently gotten the Knoppix 6.0, and have installed it on my usb flash drive. finally i can browse the internet again on that laptop, but alas, i can't watch any videos because flash player isnt installed yet. i tried to install it by myself and followed adobe's instructions but i just dont get why it won't install. here are my questions:
1. in the adobe instructions, it is said that i need to unpackage the files. and when i unpackage it, a new directory/folder is supposed to appear. but why does it always unpackage on the desktop? no folders are created when i unpackage it.
2. it is said that i need to navigate to the newly created directory and type a command. how am i supposed to navigate to a non-existent directory, huh? and how do you even navigate to certain directory? i typed help in the terminal (i'm using LXTerminal by the way) to look for a hint but i saw nothing there. so, how do you "navigate" using the terminal?
I really need to install the flash player. I've also tried using the Install components in start > system tools > install components and selected the 'flashplugin-nonfree: Flash support for your browser' but when i clicked install, nothing happens.

I am working with a "Legacy" computer (a Dell Dimension, 125MB RAM, and a Pentium III processer) without a working CD/DVD player.I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Alternative i386 iso (from the hard drive using Unetbootin) using the Command Line installation option. The computer already has Windows XP Professional installed with a working internet connection (Linksys - Wireless - G - USB Network Adapter WUSB54G).
The problem is that during installation I can't get Ubuntu to recognize my WEP internet connection. I am sure I could get Ubuntu to recognize my wireless device/connection if I already had Ubuntu installed, but I can't find anything on how to get it to recognize it during a hard drive installation.Any ideas on how I can get Ubuntu to recognize my WEP internet connection/USB Wireless Adapter during installation?Let me add that I don't understand why it is manditory to have an internet connection during a hard drive installation, but not from a CD installation - it is the same iso isn't it?

I have installed Fedora 15 on my Desktop. My desktop is a 64-bit AMD Athlon Processor. I'm having some problem installing Adobe flash player in my Desktop. due to this I'm unable to view any ..... videos.
I went to the website get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ site and there is a note that 64-bit users: Download a preview release of Flash Player with native support for 64-bit Linux from Adobe Labs. On following this link it redirected me to [URL]...10_square.html where I could find a tar.gz file Download plug-in for 64-bit Linux (TAR.GZ, 4.1 MB) I tried untarring this file but could not find configure, read me files with installation steps.
Has any one installed Adobe flash player on Fedora 15 64 bit? if so can you please point me to the rpm? or the file which has the proper installation procedure. I'm a new bie to linux. so would prefer a rpm over tar.gz files.

I hav successfully installed RHEL5.1 on my system. I downloaded flash player from Adobe website. I chose RPM from the download type. Now, I can find an icon on my GUI for the flash player. When I right-click the icon and click on "Open with software installer", I was able to install flash player. Even the system showed that the software has been installed. But still when I issue the command rpm -qi flash the output says that flash is not installed.
Is there any correct way to install the rpm package. I even tried to install using rpm -ivh <flash player pkg name> even that did'nt work... I have another query... where does the package gets installed when I download RPM's or any other software from the internet.. I want to know the path where the pkgs will be sotred...

i recently installed vlc media player 0.8.6 in yellow dog linux 6.2 on my ps3 by following this procedure..[url]... i then used the firefox add-on mediaplayerconnectivity (0.9.2) to link video files for quick time, real video, flash (flv)etc... to vlc as the default player for these video formats. (note: i had to manually add vlc as the flv default player, b/c mediaplayerconnectivity did not automatically do this.)
now...on videos when i double-click on the little movie film icon to play the streaming file through vcl the player opens, but neither the video or audio play even though i have vlc setup as the default player. i have tried playing some quick time (mov) and windows media video (wmv) streaming video and they work fine. i noticed that there's a new update (0.9.5) for vlc. do i need that update to make sure videos (flv files) video will play? if so, how do i install the 0.9.5 update after downloading it in yellow dog linux 6.2?

I'm on Slackware 13.0. I downloaded the tar file for Adobe flash player (install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz) to my /tmp.
But when I invoke "tar -xzvf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz" all I get is a file libflashplayer.so in the same /tmp directory.
I was expecting a folder with the same name and more than the one file in it.

I recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. It is working well, but Movie Player does not work, and Dragon Player plays videos/movies but with no audio. VLC works fine. how to either remove Movie Player and Dragon Player or make them work. I tried apt-get remove mplayer but that doesn't work. If not that, I wonder if the default media player can be changed to VLC, e.g., when you click any video it will start to play using VLC?

I run a Home server using Debian, and have been using it as a backup server and using it to host a voice server. I wanted to try streaming music/video so I can enjoy music at remote locations, and I have used VLC media player before, but never on Linux. I located the VLC media player package on the Synaptics Package manger, and told it to download it along with the other additional packages, and it said it had to remove some old packages and incompatible ones as well, so I said go ahead. Well, the screen blanked out at some point during the installation process, so i rebooted the server. Now it will go thru the whole loading process, and where it is supposed to prompt me to log in, it gives me a grey background and my cursor, which does react, but nothing else happens, and the activity light on the server does not flash. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I would enjoy being able to log back into my server XD
I have some knowledge of how to use and work with Linux, but only from what I have read and messed around with.

I would like to install the Windows based HAVA PC Player (similar to a Sling Box) software on my Unbuntu 10.04 PC. The download is located on the myhava.com web site under Support, then 'Downloads and Upgrades', and then click on Download HAVA_V1.8.1.36.exe.
I have never used WINE or similar software on my PC and wondering if anyone has ever tried this before or had any tips or tricks to installing the HAVA PC Player on a linux based PC.

When I try to upload the photos to my gallery, the dpreview.com says: Adobe Flash required
In order to upload images you need Adobe Flash Player. You have either an older version or no version at all. You can get the latest version on. I downloaded the RPM from the Suse website: [URL].
Code:
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls # rpm -i flash-player-10.0.32.18-3.1.1.i586.rpm
package flash-player-10.0.32.18-3.1.1.i586 is already installed
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls # updatedb
/usr/bin/find: '/home/anisha/.gvfs': Permission denied
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls #
The problem persists.
Now I realize, perhaps they mean that no other flash player than adobe will work. So now downloaded the plugin from the Adobe website: [URL]
Code:
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls # rpm -i flash-plugin-10.2.152.27-release.i386.rpm
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls # updatedb
/usr/bin/find: '/home/anisha/.gvfs': Permission denied
linux-uitj:/home/anisha/tarBalls #
The problem STILL persists.

I am a start level person in linux with switching between linux and windows projects. I am trying to install vlc media player. But as observed through net, it requires rpmfusion first, it has some links about finding requisite tools and installing them.
1) First step: installing rpm fusion:
TRY1:
I went to "www.rpmfusion.org/configuration" and used the following command:
*********************************************
# su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/el/updates/testing/5/i386/rpmfusion-free-release-5-0.1.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/el/updates/testing/5/i386/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-5-0.1.noarch.rpm'
*********************************************
But I got the following result:
*********************************************
Retrieving http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/el/updates/testing/5/i386/rpmfusion-free-release-5-0.1.noarch.rpm
error: skipping http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/el/updates/testing/5/i386/rpmfusion-free-release-5-0.1.noarch.rpm - transfer failed - Unknown or unexpected error
