I have an HP w1907 LCD monitor and when i try to use it with ubuntu 9.10 it displays oversized in the screen. I have tried to adjust it using the preferences/display (changing height/width) but cant seem to get it right. There are no linux drivers for this unit at HP. How can i get the size/aspect adjusted?

I've installed SUSE on my laptop Acer Aspire 5920G and I got Samsng 226BW as my second display. How can I change the resolution of my Samsung display to 1680*1050? currently set as 1024*768 and I can't change it. Do I need to update my NVIDIA driver? if so how can I do that? finally, If I get this fixed how can I set my Samsung to be the main display?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a machine that experienced some troubles with some of the real time stuff that I'm running. One lead that I have is that NTP daemon may have moved the time, causing false timeouts.
How do I find out if NTP daemon did indeed move time at all? Any logs? I do see NTP daemon restart in /var/log/messages, but I don't know if time adjustment should be there as well. to clarify: I need to understand it from the logs, after the event. May be 2 days after the time was adjusted. Running commands to see the current status doesn't help.
I have a hdtv as a monitor hooked up to my desktop and this monitor is set to 1024X768 4:3. My monitor is suppose to be originally set 1024X768 16:9. In the nvidia X settings is not listed. So how can I change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9? My graphics card is: nvidia FX 5200 128MB (Ubuntu 10.04).
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (which is without screen) supports the following resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and also few other standard resolutions, but it doesn't support 800x480. I am using the laptop as a carputer and Xenarc 700TSV touchscreen as screen, which is of 16:9 ratio and the native resolution is 800x480.
Now the problem is my old laptop doesn't support 800x480 and It is not possible to upgrade the graphics card. The closest resolution supported by the laptop is 800x600 but the output is horizontally stretched. Is it possible to vertically stretched the desktop resolution so that when I use 800x600, it actually displays 800x480 pixels after vertical scaling? And when I see this 800x600 output in my Xenarc 7 inch screen, output is horizontally stretched and aspect ratio becomes 1:1 ?
I have a triple monitor setup, that works fine in Windows (either using Eyefinity, or just extended desktops) I HAVE been able to get all three monitors working as extended desktops in Ubuntu, but when I set it up, I usually get "Not enough allocated memory to enable this monitor".....OR by some weirdness, all three will work. but when I reboot or shut down and then come back, only two monitors are working, and I get a message saying that 'the configuration couldnt be saved, or there was a white line in line 1' or something to that effect.
Either get extended desktop working, or Eyefinity.

I have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

LVM and Disk Utility show the correct new size, but System Monitor and the Properties of the File System (in Nautilus) show the old, smaller size. Do I need to update something to get them to see the new size?

How it was setup before was that they used to sit right next to each other so when you mouse over to the right it would go to the new screen. The problem is now when one sits on top of the other I want to be able to just mouse up instead of mousing over to the right. I don't want to use the gui to be able to do this. I want to find out what config file and specifically what setting in the config file would allow me to change this.

After getting tired of squinting at my netbook screen (System 76 Starling) I bought a 21.5" Asus VE228H monitor. It works beautifully with the right resolution and aspect, EXCEPT that the driver Ubuntu is using is for a 22" monitor, and the image on the screen has about 1/8" missing all around. Sadly, this eliminates the menu bar at the top of the screen. Moving the image down doesn't help. Is there any way to shrink the image, or get Ubuntu to use a driver for a 20" or 21" monitor instead of 22"? I've been using computers since DOS command line days, but have been using Ubuntu only about 2 months.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a switch tray on my computer and I installed opensuse in one of the hard drives that I have but as I switch between the windows hard drive and opensuse the time changes all the time. For example it's 10pm right now and if I switch the hard drive to opensuse the time automatically gets adjusted 4 hours back and then I fix it and when I switch back to my windows hard drive the time goes forward 4 hours. I check both region settings and they are both set to NY Eastern time. Why is it doing this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Kubuntu Amd64 Lucid on my desktop and I have allocated 08.03 GB partition for swap. But today I have noticed that system monitor is showing this as 09.90GB which is incorrect.
I tried deactivating the swap from KDE Partition manager. Even after deactivating swap it still shows the swap as 1.9 GB. So there is clearly 1.9 GB swap added to my system. I am not sure how. Attached screen shot clearly shows the system monitor issue. One possibility is, I have 4 GB (3.7 asper system) RAM comprising two units of 2 GB cards. Is this 1.9 GB read from one of these? I tried to boot the system from Kubuntu AMD64 live CD and then it showed only 8 GB as expected. So not sure whats causing this issue in my installation.
How can I use gconftool-2 to find the monitor size and refresh rate?By size I mean pixels such as 1920x1080, not inches as in a 26-inch monitor.

Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?
YAST2 Hardware information shows me in Monitor > Monitor > Resources > Resolution: High: 768; Vertical frequency: 76; Wide: 1024
The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4
I'm running Maverick on an HP dv6 laptop. I tried recording a video via VLC with the machine's 'TrueVision' webcam. The result seemed to lack audio, so I had a look in preferences > sound. The input tab had the mute button ticked, so I unticked it and tried adjusting the level (while realising I was probably just configuring the mic port and not the webcam's inbuilt mics).
Then things turned bad: pointer became sluggish, and changes I made to the level slider took ages to be reflected visually on screen. I queued up a pile of clicks on the 'close' button and went away for a while. On return, I was met with a box inviting me to stop a script with some screen-width-long incomprehensible name, which of course I did.
Now the system's in a state which sees windows missing title bars (tho' not menu bars) and (more problematically) the upper and lower bars on the desktop absent. I issued a hibernate command from the terminal in the hope that on waking the system would be 'fixed', but nothing changed. I tried alt-tabbing to access my open applications and close them gracefully but this command is ignored. I have 'zillions' of apps going with unsaved data and am not sure what to try next. I'd be happy just to be able to task switch to each open prog and exit it gracefully then restart. But my knowledge of the command line is such that your help is required =) .
I am looking for a utility that would do the following:1. Be run manually on a list of files whose sizes should not change, to get a control file containing the sizes of each file.2. Subsequent manual runs would report any changes in size of any of the files in the list, and allow option to accept the new sizes.3. Be run as a cron job to check for changes in the file sizes and send an email alert if a change has occurred since the last time it was run.The purpose is to detect possible hacks of key files on a website. It would not include files expected to change, but just those that should not change. It would be run manually a few times to get the control list one wants to monitor.
View 3 Replies View RelatedLast weekend I installed Ubuntu 10.4 (Netbook remix) on my new Acer Aspire 751h. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but I've noticed several things that don't work as well as on my old AA 110. I should say that I installed Ubuntu in a dual-boot setup with Windows XP, which the machine already had installed. Firstly, the screen brightness can't be adjusted with the function key/hotkey combination. The sound volume hotkeys work fine, and the brightness hotkeys work with XP, so it's not a hardware issue. The default brightness is pretty dim, so this is an annoying problem. Is there a way to bind the hotkeys to the 'increase/decrease brightness' functions?
Secondly, the vertical scroll bar on the desktop doesn't work, by which I mean if I click above or below the highlighted area no scrolling takes place. However, I can drag the highlighted area up or down and scrolling does take place, and scrolling via the touchpad works. All forms of scrolling work normally within applications. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's only a mild annoyance, though. Thirdly, in the power management preferences application I don't have an 'On Battery Power' tab - just 'On Mains Power' and 'General'. There are some other peculiarities that probably follow on from this. I have a power indicator in the top panel of the desktop, but on bootup it's a 'lightning bolt' icon rather than the battery-shaped icon it should be. If I plug into mains power, it changes to a battery-shaped 'charging' icon until it's fully-charged, when it changes back to the lightning bolt. If I then unplug the mains power, I get a battery-shaped 'discharging' icon, but this doesn't survive a restart. Obviously, a battery level indicator is very useful and I'd like to get it working properly. The help file for power management preferences says something about GConf policy keys that need to be made writable in order to display some sliders and option boxes. I certainly don't have as many sliders and options as shown in the help file. I guess this might be related to the screen brightness problem.
Finally (for now - I haven't explored everything yet) the screen ratio looks wrong. Circular icons appear as ovals. It looks like the software thinks I've got a 4:3 ratio whereas really it's widescreen. I can't see where I can change this. I've looked in 'System.. Preferences. Monitors' but there's nothing I can change there. System testing shows the apparent resolution at 1024x768, whereas the hardware spec is 1366x768. I'm wondering whether to try to fix these things individually or whether a better option might be a reinstall - perhaps without the XP dual boot. What do you think? I'm willing to change settings from the terminal but I'd need to be told exactly where to go and what to do.
I just downloaded Ubuntu 10.4 and love it. The only thing that I have a problem with is that I cannot change my aspect ration to 16:9 which is what my monitor is (its a flat screen in my media room).

Running the Preferences->Monitor utility shows that I have 1024x768 resolution selected at 75Hz (good!, as that is what the TV manual recommends), but it says that the aspect ratio is 4:3, but I want 16:8

Interesting, the physical dimensions reported 828mm x 620mm which is 4:3, but I want 694x393mm (I measured it with a ruler), which is 16:9
The card is a Radeon HD3400 series
So, what do I do next, in the good-old-days, you could just edit xorg.conf, but it seems that this no longer exists.
I am guessing that there is an xrandr command to change it, but after reading the man page for a while and playing around, could not get it to work.
I have a friend who runs Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop that has a 16:9 screen (1366x768) and an Intel 4500m GPU. I'm trying to figure out how to get 4:3 resolutions to display in their proper aspect ratio (black bars on either side of the image), rather than stretching to fill the whole screen. This is mostly for playing older games in fullscreen. I've tried messing with xorg.conf and xrandr a bit, but I didn't have much luck.

A while ago I started using a program called Imagination to create DVD slide shows, and Bombono to add menus etc. to the output from Imagination. Both programs worked like a dream. The weird part is, a test video I created using Imagination on 6/12/2010 can be imported into Bombono without any trouble. However, a new slide show I created today, cannot be imported - I get an error message from Bombono saying that the aspect ratio is 5:4, and not 4:3 or 16:9.
The only thing that has happened between 6/12/2010 and today (17/12/2010), is a routine Ubuntu 10.10 update. Does anyone know whether it is possible that a file needed by either Imagination or Bombono (or both) may have been changed by the update?
