I recently mashed the passwd, shadow, gshadow, group files in my Fedora 12 installation. I was dumb and didn't take a copy of the originals and all I have is the originals from a Fedora 11 installation.
I had Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows7 installed on my computer. I thought of trying fedora 15 and installed it on a different partition. Now only fedora and Windows boot up. Can I triple boot my system and how? If not, how to get back Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 as before.
All the updated went on smoothly but on rebooting the system after executing the "preupdrade" command, system is not able to boot. Below is the snasphot of the error that i am getting:
I tried to update fedora 11 to Fedora 12 and when my update finished, it represented me with text login not GUI. I tried to start the xserver with startx but it could not find the command. I changed the etc/inittab file from 3 to 5 and when I booted the system nothing showed on the screen it remains blank.
I am in school for my CIS degree and the book I am using this session covers Windows XP and Fedora Core 4. I am having trouble finding & downloading Fedora Core 4. My question is: Is there a big enough difference between Fedora Core 4 and Fedora Core 14 that I would not be able to use 14 instead of 4?
As there are few Package Management available in Fedora environment such as YUM and RPM, I would like to know how do you guys keep track of the installation and update when both are used and it appears that they have no knowledge of each others activity.
Basically, if a package is installed using YUM, the vary same package can be installed using RPM and vice-verse. I am not going into dependencies since it even gets worse! I also notice that YUM installation is carried out under a different path than RPM.
Consequently, it is possible to end up with TWO installations of the same package. If I understand correctly, YUM uses RPM for installation and it actually downloads the RPM Source files and place them in a temporary folder: That is the information I came across while I was educating myself on line and I am not sure it is correct. I personally, have looked into the said directory and I am not seeing any of the YUM installation which I have carried out.
I have Fedora 13 64bit GNOME since one year and now I want upgrade to 15. Should I first upgrade to 14 and then to 15? Since I did yum update, I am being reminded that stable Fedora 14 is now available. This message pops up every day. Today I clicked on it and it is now giving me option to choose either Fedora 14 or Fedora 15.I have a lot of programs pre-installed over the last one year and I simple cannot do a clean install. If something goes wrong does the upgrade offers a rollback feature like roll back to Fedora 13?I would really like to take advantage of new features in Fedora 15.
I wanted to install RT Linux on my Fedora or UI wanted to install RTbuntu. I am following installation steps from INSTALLATION doc from Rt LInux (FSM Labs free one).

Right now I'm running Ubuntu and love the concept but don't have the necessary drivers for my Notebook. I love the thing but Windows crashed just 1 month after the software warranty ran out. I have the Fedora 15 ISOs but no CD burner and no access to one. I've tried unpacking the ISO to a directory on one partition and formatted the other. All ready now with no place to go. I've started editing some of the init files and I sort of know what I'm doing but I have no idea if I even can install from that to the other partition. It seems like it should work.
