View 2 RepliesI just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

I don't know, why is it no working from script file, it write me message to terminal: ./ardiff.sh: line 242: patching: command not found.

Missing ifcfg-eth[2-5] fileset for ZNYX 345Q Quad Port 10/100 cards. I have showing in the gui network device that my ports for my ZNYX ZX345Q Quad Port card my ports are Auto eth2, Auto eth3 etc. My Motherboard and Intel cards show as System eth0 and System eth1.
There ARE corresponding entries for those in my /etc/sysconfig/network-settings/ directory, but there are not ifcfg-eth[2-5] files to correspond to these adapters. Can I just write my own files and that will do it?
How does Fedora 12/13 load these drivers into the kernel without having these ifcfg files?
I'd love to know if there is another way Fedora controls NICs / other system resources.

IMO it really is the big thing! The patch being talked about is designed to automatically create task groups per TTY in an effort to improve the desktop interactivity under system strain. Mike Galbraith wrote the patch, which is currently in its third version in recent weeks, after Linus Torvalds inspired this idea. In its third form, this patch only adds 224 lines of code to the kernel's scheduler while stripping away nine lines of code, thus only 233 lines of code are in play. Tests done by Mike show the maximum latency dropping by over ten times and the average latency of the desktop by about 60 times.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis post concerns info found at [URL]. My question is: How do I get the patch. The author makes ref. to "his" git repo and the patch for TOR. I guess the patch allows the use of some compile time options that can harden the build. I looked through the change log of TOR and couldn't see any of the options referenced by Jacob in his post. I have read on the net that compile time hardening options are part of the gnu compiler, not the application to be compiled. Is this true?

How do I go about patching this file into the Kernel?
My system has been crashing, and I think it may have something to do with Gnome since the crashes only occur when I'm using it. I checked the log file after a crash and it reported...
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed
so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I couldn't find much information regarding it online, and the only stuff I did find applied to using Gnome's git hub.
I am trying to compile the iscsi-target software SCST. It wants me to apply a patch to my Linux kernel in order to allow for certain performance gains. The problem is I still new to Linux development. Where do I begin? How do I apply the patch? Do I need to recompile the kernel? I am running Ubuntu 10.04.3 amd64

I have 3 computers connected via an ethernet cable to the same ADSL modem. Each has its own internet address and what appears to be a local address (10.1.1.1, 10.1.1.2 etc).
I would like to enable file sharing between the three but I don't want one of them to be a gateway for the others and I don't want any information that the 3 computers share to go out on the net.
So far, the slack book and man pages imply that years of research are ahead of me and none mentions a "gateway free" configuration.
