General :: Find Found Files That Don't Exist?
Dec 7, 2010
I was using the following command to search for tmp files older than 15 days for deletionI used "ls -l" first just in case
Code:
find somedirectory/ -type f -ctime +15 -exec ls -l {} ;
then i noticed that occasionally i get a "No such file or directory" error
When I looked at the directory, the file was not there. How does "find" find a file that doesn't exist? Is it possible that the file can be deleted right at the moment after a file is found and before the command executed?

I've got a simple command that does almost what I want.
The following will locate all files with a suffix of '_compressed.swf' and copy each into its same directory with a '.bak2' appended:
However, I need to replace '_compressed.swf' with '_content.swf' I'd like to use find, rather than recursive flag on cp for consistency.
Objective
In: /content/somefile_compressed.swf
Out: /content/somefile_content.swf

I use find / -name myfile to search files. But it will print out a very long list such as follow:
Code:
...
find: /var/empty/sshd: Permission denied
find: /etc/audit: Permission denied
find: /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crl: Permission denied
find: /etc/httpd/conf/ssl.crt: Permission denied
[code]....

i'd like to know the total filesize of all files found with the find command, so
Code:
find -iname '*.mpg' | xargs -I {} du -sh {}
but this gives me the filesize of each file, since each line is passed to "du".
how can I pass the whole list through the pipe?

I am running a fairly new Debain Jessie stable installation with Xfce desktop. I need to use Xfce4 becuas the standard Gnome 3 does ot work when logging in with xrdp which I use becuase the actual box is headless.
I have an issue when starting synaptic. When I start it from the menu entry it just does not start. When I start from the terminal with
Code: Select allgksudo synaptic
I get an error box "Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file" At the same time I can see in the terminal window a message
"Error copying '/home/userxxx/.Xauthority' to /'tmp/libgksu-SwcIe0': File or Directory not found".
I assume it is related to that I use a rdp session to connect, but I am otherwise clueless.
Code: Select alluserxxx@server2>xauth
xauth: file /home/userxxx/.Xauthority does not exist

On a KDE4 environment after downloading some music from rapidshare with JDownloader the archives self-extracted with the symbol in some of the file names. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. Now I'm stuck with those files on my machine. Anyone knows how to get rid of them?

I am trying to do a find/grep/wc command to find matching files, print the filename and then the word count of a specific pattern per file. Here is my best (non-working) attempt so far:
wc `find . ( -name "*.as" -o -name "*.mxml" ) -exec grep -H HeightResizableList {}` ;

Is there a way to specify to find that I only want text files (and not binary files)? Grep has an option to exclude binary files, so I thought find probably has a similar feature, but I've been unable to find it.

I am Vamsi from Alcatel-Lucent. We have a software to configure the wireless broadband devices to the Linux machine. Till now, it was running on FC-5. When we need to add any new device, we used to add it in airprime.c, sw.h and usb-serial.c under /usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/serial directoy.
Now we are trying to upgrade the system to FC-12. But I am not able to find any kernal files under /usr/src/kernels/2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE/drivers/usb/serial directory. I saw in some websites that the kernal files can be found at: /root/rpmbuild/SOURCES/linux-2.6.31/drivers/usb/serial. But in my system, there is no rpmbuild directory.

I recently have been trying out the Ubuntu live CD.
I have a shared computer where some are suspicious of anything other than Windows.
The live CD is an excellent way forward.
As I understand it Ubuntu is loaded into the computer RAM, thereby it makes no actual changes to the computer as it does not load into the hard drive.
I have noticed that if I have been doing work on the computer and forgotten to empty the trash, when I run the live CD on another occasion this material is still in the trash.
Is data put into the trash saved to the hard drive?
It does not matter to me if it is as long as I have deleted it but I would like to know where it goes if it does save to the hard drive.
I am running Windows 7 on a 64bit PC

I think as a result of a script that started duplicating files in a loop, the allotted capacity on my VPS filled up with multiple nested copies of the same files... After a reboot, I could delete most of them, but got rm stalled in certain directories...
after isolating which ones, I found this: a directory listing that lists the files, and at the same time tells me they are not there!!!
partial listing:
Code:
ls
ls: cannot access userkey.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access workshop.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access quiz.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access webservice_rest.php: No such file or directory
[Code]....

How would i go about copying files to a directory, yet skip the files that already exist in the directory, and also remove the files that are in the directory. For example:
Code:
$ls /dir1
img001.jpg
img002.jpg
[code]....
Now i would like to copy from dir1 to dir2, but the contents of dir2 would be:
Code:
$ls /dir2
img003.jpg

I'm taking over as a Linux admin where they use sendmail last week. I've done very little with email on linux, and haven;'t touched sendmail since 2000 so I am really out of my element.Basically the sendmail server for many months has had performance problems, disk, and load.Looking into it I found this doing a tail on /var/log/MaillogAug 25 17:11:49 web8 sendmail[1531]: o7OGF2VH002566: to=postmaster, delay=1+01:58:10, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=2388694, relay=[xx.xx.xx.xx], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: [10.10.20.107]:No route to hostAnd that was all it was spewing, I edited the config files because xx.xx.xx.xx doesn't exist. And running m4, then restarting sendmail. It is still spewing out that message, but I do see some things connecting to the new yy.yy.yy.yy address. I even greped the entire /etc looking for the old machine.

Once or twice I have seen files I copied in kubuntu. The strange thing is that when I go to kubuntu again, I don't see files I have copied in windows drive.

new to ubuntu and linux, and using Lucid 10.04 LTS ok, i'm trying to get XBMC going, and following a nice step by step instruction on wiki.xbmc.org, but now i'm stuck at this step... In Ubuntu the SVN Repositories are not automatically added. You must add them manually. First, download the SVN Repo Installer from: [URL] Extract it to the ~/.xbmc/plugins/programs directory. If this directory does not exist, run XBMC one time and then exit back to Ubuntu. The directory should now exist.
i ran xbmc once (after the video driver problem was solved, though it messed up my dual monitors, gotta figure that one out yet.) i got the zip file, it's in my downloads. now my newbness really shows... i can't find an 'extract' command for gnome, can't find the .xbmc directory using the file browser, can't figure out how to hunt for folders instead of files, and don't know how to look inside folders i don't have permission to, that is, i don't know if there's a 'sudo' like option for the file browser. i've been searching the forums, but without the correct search terms, i'm wading in an ocean. i really want to give ubuntu an honest try, but i feel like a foreigner. EDIT: btw, up to this point, the forums have been invaluable, you all are great.

I have a lot of mp3 files without any ID3 tag information. This is very annoying, because my iPod does not show them correctly. My Banshee shows them as "unknown artist" and the title. I would like to find them all in a bunch to batch update them.

We have a huge amount of duplicate files in a folder and I would like some pointers on to writing a bash script to create a list of the duplicate files. I've seen examples that check for the md5 sum of files... but I dont need that, the file name is enough.

I used following command to sort one day older log files
Quote:
find /opt/TimesTen/tt_transaction_log/ -name "mtsDB.log*" -mtime +1 -print
following are log files which are existing, I have to delete one day older files from this location but when use above mentioned command it won't print one day older files, as i understand "-mtime" modified time, "+1" means one day older. am i correct?
Code:
-rw-rw-rw- 1 ablddb dba 268435456 May 30 17:11 mtsDB.log126985
-rw-rw-rw- 1 ablddb dba 268435456 May 30 17:17 mtsDB.log126986
-rw-rw-rw- 1 ablddb dba 268435456 May 30 17:23 mtsDB.log126987
[code].....
How can i print one day older logfiles?
