I am looking to get some information on the version of Linux we are running. I was advised that it was 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5. When I did a search on this and it keeps telling me that is reference to a kernel info. Is this the Linux version or kernel info?
View 6 RepliesI've been searching Google for a bit now, and either I'm too stupid or too tired to figure out the perfect search term for it.Im looking for a reference list of HTTP header info -- e.g, I have a program on Firefox that I can modify to send any header info i want "Safari, Mozilla, Internet Explorer" that sort of thing -- so a web site will believe Im using IE when in fact I am using Firefox.Does anyone have a reference of what the available "official" headers are? Also, a list of "OS header" responses would be nice, so I could fool something in believing I am a windows 3.1 machine.

1. Does minimum installation not drop on a kernel or initrd with ext3 support? I can't imagine that's true, but have to ask.
2. The USB stick is single partition ext3. Maybe there is some limitation specifically related to USB stick booting that requires boot to be FAT16 or FAT32? Except the CentOS 5.5 installer refuses to let me install on either FAT.
3. How can I do the equivalent of lsmod on a linux installation that will not boot? i.e. I have CentOS x86_64 running in VirtualBox, I can plug the USB stick in there, so how do I get information on the USB stick's kernel and initrd if I can't boot from it?
4. Is it possible to rebuild the i386 based initrd on this USB stick, when the computer is not booted from that stick, with a system that's x86_64 based?
System Info:
Dell Latitude i686 Laptop which has run CentOS 5.5 and Fedora 12,13,14 in the past, and boots from Fedora 14 Live CD transferred to a USB stick. So I know USB booting is possible on this machine, and this stick.
The process of creating the stick:
CentOS 5.5 i386 on a USB stick. Old Dell i686 laptop which has previously run CentOS 5.5 installed from DVD, and has successfully booted from this same USB stick holding transferred Fedora 12,13,14 Live CDs. CentOS 5.5 was installed onto the USB drive directly by the CentOS 5.5 DVD installer (running virtualized in VirtualBox 4.02 on Mac OS X 10.6.5.). No errors or complaints during installation.
For whatever reason, the installer did not do some things correctly. First Grub wasn't working correctly, I got that sorted out and have the Grub+CentOS splash screen, it finds vmlinuz and the initrd, and then I get a kernel panic.
Ext3 was built into the kernel and that's why I'm getting this message. I do not know how the installer would have dropped a kernel or initrd during instalation that that don't contain such a basic thing that obviously comes in linux kernel 2.6.18-89 EL.
I did search everywhere and could not find the information I needed. I want to know :What is the system requirement (HD, RAM, CPU ) for

Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

I've checked and the output is right, There is no file of that name but there is neither a folder of that name.

I am trying to install ndiswrapper, and have gotten as far as extracting the .gz file. However, when I type in the "make" command, it returns the error message:
Cannot find kernel version in /usr/src/linux-2.6.21.5, is it configured? Stop.
I do not have anything in the folder /usr/src, so I don't know where it might be. I'd like to install this, so it will make my switch to Linux easier.

I am getting Kernel panic. I was getting is very frequently before, then I re-installed and it starts off fine then after a while it starts happening again.The problem is I have no idea what is causing it. The screen is completely frozen and won't respond to anything. The Alt sysreq combinations don't work, and I have to power off with the button.

Unfortunately kernels are changing and it could be interesting to have the information for each iso cdrom. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have install windows XP and Fedora-14-X86_64 on dual boot, I want to run other OS on fedora by using Virtual machine. I have download and installed VirtaulBox-4.0.0 successfully but I cannot able to start it. I got error about Vbox driver not installed [error code:1908]. I have also installed DKMS package, but also didn't work.
Finally I found the actual problem was kernel not compatible with latest version of vbox and I need to update my kernel-headers. I also meet that solution by using command: yum install binutils gcc make patch libgomp glibc-headers glibc-devel kernel-headers kernel-devel and its work fine, this command download and install the kernel compatible VirtualBox-3.2.* and now its works fine.
But problem is that when I booting my PC, it shows 3 options for entering OS rather then 2.
1. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.10.74.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
2. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.6.45fc14.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
3. Other [windows XP]
How can i delete that old version- No.2?

The RHEL 4 update 7 installation CD installs the kernel with version 2.6.9-78.EL and therefore must contain corresponding vmlinuz and initrd.img. However I would like to have an all modules initrd that is used during installation but for a different version (2.6.9-78.0.13.EL). Is there a way in which I could obtain/make such an initrd?

I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.
