Ubuntu :: Emoathy Msn Contact List Is Empty

Aug 27, 2010

I've always used empathy as an MSN client and everything has always worked fine. Since a week ago (or something more) my on-line contact list has become empty, all of my contacts are marked as off-line. I checked at meboo and I had a lot of on-line contacts, so it must be an empathy issue. I wouldn't want to change messaging client, I like the way empathy integrates the gnome desktop.

Debian Multimedia :: Restoring Contact List In Squeeze With KDE

Oct 18, 2010

I used Kubuntu with KDE 4.5.1 up to August, when I switched to Debian Squeeze with KDE (currently frozen at 4.4.5). Before migrating, I used rsync (luckbackup) to backup the whole Home directory. Kontact version used on Debian is now 4.4.6. While I could use the import feature successfully to retrieve all my e-mail messages by pointing it to ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/, I couldn't find a way to do the same with contacts.

I don't have backups of my old ~/.local/share/contacts, the folder simply doesn't exist. However, I have ~/.local/share/akonadi. I never used Akonadi Tray Icon to create a backup. In KAddressBook, I have Personal Contacts, which is empty. While waiting for a solution, I filled Default Address Book with some contacts' e-mail addresses retrieved manually from archived past e-mails.

In ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc I have the following:

1) a folder named lock, containing a text file named _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcf4g7TNh8g and another called _home_lelamal_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcfXASyTlNE. If opened, they show 1372 kontact, and 1629 korgac respectively.

2) A file named std.vcf of 0B size.

3) 8 files, numbered progressively, named "std.vcf__ std.vcf__7, all of which are also of 0B size.

I tried renaming the old /kabc to /kabc.old (in case it got modified in the process) and used a copy of it as a target for Default Address Book in KDE Resources, whose path was changed to point to it. Nothing changed, when I reopened KaddressBook there were still only the new contacts I manually created.

Akonadi Configuration shows Personal Contacts, and it correctly points to ~/.local/share/contacts/, but if the folder isn't there I'm not sure what it's pointing to. I also have a Default Address Book, and when I click on Modify, instead of showing a path like Personal Contacts did, it shows a blank field. When I click on Open File Dialog, it expects me to point it to a vCard Address Book File.

If I'm back to KAddressBook, and open the Personal Contacts addressbook to import the the only vCard I am aware of (the 0B sized std.vcf file in /kabc) nothing happens, it remains empty.

Ubuntu :: Glabels Glitch - Can't Get To Merge The New Contact List

Nov 23, 2010

I'm running 10.10. I'm trying to generate a set of labels for a new contacts list in evolution. Problem is I can't get glabels to merge the new contact list, even though it is selected as default in evolution. When I select Objects, Merge properties, and format "data from default evolution addressbook", it always imports the contacts list which was the original default, even though I have changed the default. I have reinstalled glabels, but problem remains. Seems like a simple issue, but its driving me mad.

General :: Users Without Prior Contact With MS Windows?

Feb 3, 2010

It was always why did You switch from there or that. I wonder are there (or better yet here actually) Linux users, that where never 'tainted' with the proprietary infamous operating system? I mean those who never *switched*, but had either both or saw Linux first (before MS Windows).

How do they perceive Linux? We , the ones coming from <put whatever You come from here> , are inevitably biased, carry a background noise and a "whistle" fading in our ears. I know computers from the days they came without operating system (just mere interpreters upon a BIOS stack) and really do appreciate the ways of *NIX. But I see my kids growing and exploring all kinds of "solutions" and OS-es and they have mixed feelings:

1. They are not bothered if software "looks" alike if it is functional

2. They like certain features on either sides and miss where they lack

3. They, above all, appreciate functionality

4. They miss gaming support on Linux a lot (big names hesitating)

General :: Bad SSD On A EeePC - How To Recover Files

Aug 6, 2010

I'm trying to recover a lost partition from a faulty SSD . I've used Linux last time, hence I'm a bit rusty. Still I'm trying to recover a damaged SSD filesystem on a eeePC 900 of a friend of mine ...Here are the details.

Asus eeePC 900

- 4GB primary SSD (OS is installed in here and works fine)

- 16GB secondary SSD (this one is faulty; after a few weeks of problems this friend of mine made some sort of system restore, but Linux couldn't use it correctly and trashed it away with all of it's data ... he couldn't explain it better to me. I'd like to recover the files from within this SSD)

Here's what I did on the eeePC:

1) fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sdb: 16.1GB, 16139354112 bytes
...
/dev/sdb 1 1962 15759733+ 83 Linux

[code]......

I'm trying to find out the right words without generating any inflammatory answers from the community ... I currently kinda have only a Windows Seven installation available to work with ...

If you're still with me I add a few more details. That's all been done on the Win machine.I've managed to load the sdb.img file with Gizmo (it's a little software that mounts img files). Gizmo couldn't load the sdb1 partition inside of it but ... another program called PhotoRec managed to access the mounted disk, found the ext3 partition inside of it (gave me a few errors though) and successfully recover a lot of files :-) Well, a lot, not all of them, and not every recovered file was good That's a first improvement, that tells me sdb.img actually contains valid data even if only partially valid. I don't know if PhotoRec is to be blamed for the failed ones or the SSD image file did not contain enough valid data to let PhotoRec do a good job.

Now I would go back to Linux. I'm well aware that Linux has more potentials than Windows when it comes to handling disk images, loopback devices and so on; but, as I already said earlier, I'm a bit rusty.I'm willing to make a fresh installation of Linux (maybe Ubuntu) on a spare harddisk in order to get full advantage of that and dig deeper but I need directions when it comes to recover that lost partition. I'd like to try and recover the entire partition (not only a few files), maybe rebuilding the ext3 superblock or whatever. Here I'm lost, I don't know what has been developed in the last years regarding partition recovery in Linux, what tools are available, which forums deal with such techniques, I'd like to be pointed in the right direction.

General :: Grub Failure On EeePC Eeebuntu

Jun 25, 2010

I recently got my EEEPC and wanted to get linux on it. So I did some looking around and this Eeebuntu seems to be the best fit. I'm having some issues here though. I poked around on the Ubuntu site (because I have limited experience there) and googled and searched this forum. I found several solutions but none worked. Ilimited my swap to 1 gig, I created a home partition and a 10gb "/" partition I tried super grub and came back to the error 15 not so lucky grub boot i have dont largest continous install. Manual install and an install side by side.

I swallowed 3 screams and the urge to chuck this pretty little netbook but the ubuntu on my dell laptop has renewed my hope... somewhat. As of right now I'm booting from a live cd in an external DVD drive. I will note that my installs get to 94% or so before the fatal grub error and super grub in its cd form can boot it but super grub boot through uboot cannot. nor can it install or fix grub. So here is where we stand my current FDisk

General :: Ubuntu Netbook Remix Install For EeePC / Xandros?

Using eeePC1000 with Xandros installed and investigating installation of Ubuntu, especially seeing that there was a netbook version. Have had some problems creating a bootable USB, but followed a thread on the netbook forum that I think will be useful. Before going ahead I wanted some advice on a few things:

- does the Ubuntu OS install over Xandros or is there work to be done post install to clear Xandros out?
- if i want to keep using Thunderbird, StarOffice etc. as supplied with Xandros can I install these to Ubuntu?

Sorry if above all seems obvious: sites I've been to, or books are great at telling you about how good the OS is and how to install but nothing on what happens to the old OS.

The reason I typed in that ip address in step 3 was that is the ip listed in the "wlan0" block when I typed "ifconfig -a" on my local linux laptop.

General :: Export A VirtualBox Appliance To A NAS?

Jan 30, 2010

I'm using VirtualBox 3.1.2 (r56127) on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit). I'm trying to use Export Appliance utility to clone my virtual machines over local network using SMB protocol to NAS. I decided to do it because some machines are larger than free space on my local disk drive - lack of space for the clones. Simply, I specify GVFS path in the folder selection dialog box, for example:

/home/mloskot/.gvfs/mloskot on browarekhd/VirtualBox/clones

The process starts but after a minute or so the VirtualBox throws an error. Here is screenshot with the exact error:

Does it mean export over network is not supported? Does it mean there is a bug in VirtualBox? Or, simply I must not have used GVFS path as the one above as it consists of spaces in mloskot on browarekhd ?

UPDATE: Maciek suggested below to copy vmdk file to NAS manually. Generally, it would work, but as I specify in my question, I can't generate vmdk file (by exporting VM locally first) on my box where I keep all my VMs due to lack of disk space.

General :: Export Display From A Terminal To A Windows PC?

Aug 20, 2011

Exporting display from a Linux terminal to a Linux desktop is easy; you do the following:

On 192.168.90.121 (localPC):

xhost + 192.168.10.164

On 192.168.10.164 (remotePC):

export DISPLAY=192.168.90.121:0.0 <br/>
firefox

The Firefox window appears on my localPC. In the above case both PCs are Linux.

Can I similarly export the Linux display to a Windows PC? In the above example, localPC would be Windows and remotePC would be Linux.
