General :: /etc/rc.local Behavior Different In Ubuntu Vs. Debian?

Apr 26, 2011

A rather obscure problem, clearly our understanding here is challenged! On ubuntu (10.04 & earlier) we boot our apps under a user account from /etc/rc.local which runs under root. First the boot script installs drivers and does rooty things, then we launch the executable under the "myaccount" account:

su myaccount -c startPrg.bash (Inside is the actual /mybin/myprg &; )and the program is left running (our goal of course) BUT in debian (lenny) the exit from su terminates its child, which also seems right.

Now confused..

1) How can we spin off a child from /etc/rc.local that executes under a user account, but is not terminated when the su exits?

2) Why does the script act differently on ubuntu vs. debian?

Debian Installation :: Odd NIC Behavior On Install?

Sep 10, 2010

Using a Realtek 8111/8168b Revision 1 NIC on a desktop comp, it's being detected by Lenny, Squeeze, and Gentoo (09/02/2010) installers (all are AMD64 distro's being run on a dual core intel processor), the r8169 driver is being loaded automatically on all of them. However, at the moment the NIC is detected during the net-installs, it goes dead until power has been cut. The switch doesn't register it as being active, nor do any of the activity lights on the motherboard register it as being active.In Gentoo's setup I can run an ifconfig and see the NIC as eth0 as it should be, I can ping the loopback as well as a statically assigned IP address. However pinging anything else in the LAN results in timeouts, and anything outside of the LAN results in hosts not found.

Debian Configuration :: Dhcpd Server Behavior Seems To Have Changed In Squeeze?

Aug 9, 2011

I've been using dhcpd for address assignments to PCs for a very long time with no issues. I recently upgraded from lenny to squeeze and now dhcpd seems to have new behavior which I can't seem to change. Here's what I want to do. First, I have a simple situation and don't want to get involved with dynamic DNS updates. I have host statements for each of my PCs and a range statement for cases where I install a new device and don't yet have a host statement for it. Previously, I could discover the ethernet address for the new device from the dhcpd log and add a host statement with an address of my choosing for the new device.

I'd then restart dhcpd and do something like reboot the device or issue an ipconfig /renew statement on the new PC. What would happen is that the old dynamically assigned IP address would be NAKed and the device would do a DHCPDISCOVER, etc. and get the new IP address I specified in the dhcpd.conf host statement. In squeeze, this no longer works. The client asks for the old address it got dynamically and the server just says yes. I can't seem to find a way to get it to NAK the dynamic address and use the new address I've specified in the host statement. I'd appreciate any enlightenment on how this is now supposed to be done. Here's my simplified dhcpd.conf file:

authoritative;
log-facility daemon;
ddns-update-style none;

[code]....

Note that the address here was assigned based on a previous range statement and isn't consistent with the above config file.

General :: Konqueror Updates To Local Files / Executing Local Binaries?

Dec 9, 2010

One of Konqueror's unique features is that i can name a local process as the action in a form. When i submit that form, the local process is executed. Very helpful for certain offline tasks. What would make it even better is if i could find a way to pass some data to that local process from the html page. This could be the content of a hidden input item, etc. Alternatively, if there is a way for Konqueror to create or update a local file with data from the html page, that would acheive the same end.

I don't know if it would be safe to force install without the dependencies (even though I would install them later).

General :: Change System Console Screen Blanking Behavior?

For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver.

Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings.

If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.

General :: Gnome - US International Keyboard Layout That Mimics Windows' Behavior?

Jun 19, 2010

I am used to using US International as my keyboard layout. However, the implementation appears to differ greatly between Windows and Linux (Gnome, in my case - may well be a GTK issue since GTK behaves the same on Windows).The layout uses dead keys, for example for keys such as ', ", ^, &c. allowing easy entry of characters with diacritics. On Windows pressing a dead key and then a key that has no pair associated results in the dead key's character (when paired with space) and the character from the second key. Example: Pressing ", a yields "ä", however, pressings yields "'s", as there is no pairing for ' and s.

Now, there is a language called English which makes frequent use of exactly those two characters and since it works on Windows to just type them as usual it's muscle memory for me now. Which brings me to my problem:On Linux (and GTK on Windows), there is a pairing for ' and s (among many others), resulting in Å› (which, in turn, leads to me frequently typing "itÅ›"). So typing "it's" requires me to type ',  , s at the end.There are a few other combinations I'm used to that don't work. Among those is that for non-existant pairs simply nothing is the result. Typing "I'd" results in "I". Hitting one of those keys twice results in a non-spacing diacritic which breaks my habit of typing strings by first typing both quotation marks (which now result in a non-spacing acute accent or macron).

Long story short: None of the supplied US International layouts appears to function the same as in Windows - are there any that do work identically? Or any chance to configure it that way? While it may be nice to type an s with acute accent or non-spacing diacritics, those aren't exactly common needs for me.

I have found that "Force" does that; unfortunately, "Force" also locks the window in position, preventing me from moving or resizing it if I should want to. General :: Meanings Of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin And /usr/local/bin ?

Aug 19, 2011

Let's get clear with all bin and sbin folders(from filesystem hierarchy standard):

So the question is: Why there are so many directories and what are the meanings of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin?

Many programs are distributed through archives and we have to build them from source code. Usually they have makefile so it's quite easy. This process involves creating files in usr/local/lib, usr/local/bin... usr/local/whatever without creating specific folders for a given program.

I think it's not right because if we need to remove the program we have to manually delete every of its files if the program's creator didn't take care of it.

Debian :: Stty Command In /etc/rc.local

Jun 16, 2010

Using serial terminal(emulated) to connect to linux box. In order to fix row/column count I added stty command in rc.local:

Code:
stty -F /dev/ttyS0 rows 56
stty -F /dev/ttyS0 cols 110

If I add it in redhat's /etc/rc.d/rc.local - it works fine. But if I add it in debian's /etc/rc.local - it doesn't work. I checked by redirecting some output to /dev/ttyS0 - rc.local gets executed and stty commands are executed also - but for some reason rows/columns dosn't change after I login. If I execute rc.local by hand - stty commands work.

why this works on redhat but not on debian ?

Ubuntu :: Different NTFS Volume Behavior In 10.04?

May 17, 2010

Ubuntu 64 bit is installed on the hard disk with two partitions: one for Ubuntu, another is NTFS partition called Shared. Before upgrading to 10.04 Shared volume was available. To mount it, it was necessary to enter the password.After upgrading to 10.04, I see two volumes: Shared and Shared_. Places menu contains Shared item. When I click it, it opens without password, and shows /media/Shared_, with correct contents. Original Shared volume appears in the media directory:

Code:

root@alex-64:/media# ls -l
total 12
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2010-04-21 19:49 cdrom -> cdrom0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-04-21 19:49 cdrom0
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 2010-05-09 08:25 Shared
drwx------ 1 alex alex 4096 2010-05-17 08:56 Shared_

Shared volume is empty. Can this be fixed? It is OK to work with Shared_ volume?

Ubuntu :: Odd Behavior In Lucid After Boot?

Jun 3, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic a few weeks ago. The upgrade went fine. Then I decided to move my exit, maximize, and minimize buttons to the right side. I used Ubuntu Tweak to do this. Since that time I have very odd behavior after I boot Lucid.The booted system comes up with an X for a cursor. There are no exit, maximize, and minimize buttons on my window bar. Finally, I can open a terminal, but cannot type anything in it.Sometimes I can get things back to normal by using Ubuntu Tweak to move the buttons to the left or right (depending on where they were before the boot). Sometimes I have to open System>Preferences>Appearance> and change Visual Effects from None to Normal or vice versa.I have tried metacity --replace (after getting the terminal window to allow me to type in data), but after I reboot, things are back the way they were. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE on board graphics card, and I am using the Nvidia current version driver. When things are working correctly, System Monitor shows a compiz process running but not a metacity process. Is this correct?
