I want my keyboard to be disabled for sometime say 5min or more. My keyboard gets loaded more than fingers it bears sometimes loads of books.So want to disable for a specific time

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running into some weird behavior while using xinput to disable the keyboard that might be an underlying bug, and I'm wondering if anyone could reproduce it or provide any insight into what's causing it. I'm running Ubuntu desktop 10.10 64-bit in a VMware Workstation VM running on a Windows 7 64-bit host.First I use "xinput list" to find out which keyboards are present in the system. In my case there's only one with id=9. Next I execute "xinput set-prop 9 "Device Enabled" 0" to disable the keyboard at id=9. Now, if I type this into the terminal and hit enter, the keyboard gets disabled but at the same time the enter key becomes stuck. The system thinks the enter key is being held down.
However, if I make a script with the same command and execute it by clicking it in Nautilus, the keyboard gets disabled and no keys are stuck. It seems if the keyboard is disabled with a press of the keyboard, then whatever key was pressed to trigger the disabling of the keyboard becomes stuck.
You might ask why I would want to disable the keyboard in the first place. It's because I'm running Ubuntu in VMware Unity mode, where the system in the VM is integrated with the host desktop system, the VM's windows appear as individual windows on the host desktop,etc. In this mode, whenever I close a VM window by hitting a key on the keyboard (for example, hitting Ctrl+D while in gnome-terminal) and focus goes back to a host window, then that key becomes stuck the next time I open a VM window. If I close a VM window by clicking the mouse then there's no problem. I'm pretty sure now that this is caused by the above mentioned bug from disabling the keyboard. I think in Unity mode VMware workstation runs a script to disable the keyboard in the guest whenever VM windows lose focus, so key presses don't continue to be piped to the guest OS. However, if this action is triggered by a press of the keyboard, then that key becomes stuck in the guest OS.
Some Flash games don't work very well on Linux because when you hold down a key (such as one of the cursor keys) the Flash player sends the game multiple KeyDown and KeyUp events, leaving the game unable to tell the difference between a user holding a key or a user tapping a key quickly. (On other platforms it seems that typematic repeat generates multiple KeyDown events but not KeyUp events.)
Anyway, to work around this problem, I go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and disable "Key presses repeat when key is held down" when I want to play a Flash game, then put it back afterwards. I do this often enough that I'd like to set up some shortcut keys to change the setting. I figured out the following commands to turn it off and on again:
gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/repeat --type bool false
gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/repeat --type bool true
My problem is that when I have tried entering these on the command-line (in a gnome-terminal), X-windows seems to get confused and behaves as though I'm holding down the enter key. It doesn't stop if I press enter again. I tried pressing ctrl-alt-f1 to switch to a text console and it worked fine, but when I pressed ctrl-alt-f7 to go back to X it still behaved as though I was holding down enter. I had to press ctrl-alt-backspace to reset X before it would return to normal. I *think* it happens in particular when changing the setting from true to false. I'm running Karmic Koala with all the updates.
I'm trying to stop all boot time messages from appearing -- basically I'd like to have a simple blank screen from grub to xdm.
I tried everything -- used the "quiet" option in grub's config, added dmesg -n 1 to rc.local, changed console=ttySx, set kernel.printk in sysctl.conf to 4 1 1 7, and even eradicated rsyslogd altogether... to no avail. I still see all sorts of messages on my screen.
I have an Ubuntu/Win7 dual boot system with GRUB as my default bootloader, and I am often distracted by other things when I boot up my PC. Is there any way I can stop GRUB from loading linux automatically after it times out? I would prefer if it never timed out, and I could eternally have the OS selection on the screen until I decide to select an OS.Have been reading the GNU Grub Manual, but I can't make heads or tails of some of the more technical stuff yet and I do not know enough about Terminal to know all of the commands they are throwing at me.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.
What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.
The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.
Currently I have two 1920x1080 screens running in Twinview on my Geforce 275 graphics card. Want I want to do is a quick simple way of disabling my secondary monitor when playing video games or using xbmc to watch movies, etc. I've tried a few applets but they require the xandr function which I think Nvidia doesn't support.
Is there a way to disable this quickly other than loading up nvidia-settings and disabling the monitor everytime. I don't really want to use two seperate x sessions and xinerama due to the fact you can't use compositing.

Whenever I type on the keyboard my mouse will become frozen for about 2 seconds and then will work as normal. It will happen with any key press. This problem became very apparent when trying to play first person shooters. I cannot move with the keyboard and look around with the mouse at the same time

The thing is that after a short time without writing (for example when watching a video) it changes the layout to the United States keyboard.Also, when I boot ubuntu, the keyboard layout is afghan (AR, the first layout). and I have to change it to the spanish one every time.

I installed Ubuntu with the netboot. I only installed the packages I needed. Concerning X, I installed xdm as login manager and fluxbox as window manager. All is working fine except that whatever I type under X (under xdm or, after logging in, under fluxbox) appears in tty1! The keyboard inputs appear under X and under tty1 (so usually after "login:", or hidden after "password:").
Let me provide you with more details. Starting from xdm, I cannot access to the other ttys. "ctrl+alt+F[1-6]" do not work. Actually, this is not entirely true: after I type "ctrl+alt+F2", all my keyboard inputs under X will be appear in tty2 (and not anymore in tty1). I can see that from /var/log/auth.log which has a lot of lines like this:

These errors are due to the fact that tty1 receives a wrong login (something I typed under X, before pressing RET). BTW: If I connect to xdm using my password (instead of my passphrase, thanks to pam_ssh), then I login into tty1 at the same time.
I checked that X is running under tty7. "ck-list-sessions" returns:

Under X, if I type "ctrl+alt+F7" and "RET", then X crashes and it is launched again. After this, all is working fine: the tty[1-6] can be accessed and the keyboard inputs do not go anymore to them when I am under X.
I face the same problem on two different computers (a desktop computer and a laptop). Notice that I face the problem even with pam_ssh not installed (I mentioned pam_ssh earlier).

When I plug in a removable device, KDE automounts it, but I prefer to do this manually (also perhaps not liking the idea that any user could plug a device in and have it mounted). I've searched around and looked at KDE -> System Settings -> Removable Devices, and "Enable automatic mounting of removable devices" is already unchecked

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy workstation has a built-in speaker that, surprisingly, plays audio very well. I also have external speakers hooked up to the audio out jack which are easier to hear. Unfortunately, when I try to play some audio material, sound comes out of both the external speakers and the built-in speaker on the workstation.
I'd like to disable the speaker inside the machine, and just plug in head-phones to the external speaker so I can listen to training material at work without bothering my office mate. I'm not sure how to do this in Linux (Suse Enterprise Desktop 11). Fiddling around with the Gnome audio tools doesn't list two different audio devices on the machine.
From what I can tell, sound is played through the ALSA system. I looked in my home directory and there is no .asoundrc controlling configuration.
I should also add that I check in the BIOS for a way to disable the built-in speaker, but I could not find such a setting.
My Acer notebook has a button that can disable the wireless network device when pressed. Since it is near the ESC key, sometimes I press it on accident, especially when editing something with Vim. When I press the wireless switch to enable the device again, nothing happens. Using the command ifconfig wlan0 up results in the following error:

Rebooting and logging on linux again didn't solve anything. I had to log into windows. The device started out disabled, then pressing the button reenabled the device. I'd like to be able either to reenable wireless at will, or outright disable the wireless switch button.

We want the like this , that a user copy a folder from their local machine and paste it to the samba server . but they cannot delete this folder once the backup is there at linux machine.
So this is working fine. But our users are able to Rename the folder they have pasted at linux machine which we dont want . and even they are able to cut and paste files from 1 folder to another folder in the samba server. We just want them to copy a file or folder from their local windows machine and paste to samba server and they can also read it (copy and paste back to their windows computer)whenever they want . but we dont want them to cut and paste within linux machine and rename that file as well.
I've had a hell of a time with this and now all but YAST2 are ok. Going back some time to 10.0 this could be used to disable it very completely.

I will be using cups when I install my printer which is one concern and I am not at all sure that modprobe will do anything anymore?
I also recollect that there is a command to cause the kernel to effectively reboot which would save restarting. Can't remember what it is. Maybe some one can refresh my memory.
