Jul 11, 2011I'm managing a desktop that is several states away. The person I'm working with has no internet and the computer IQ of a twig. We're running Ubuntu 10.04 It's a Dell 230 Slim tower. Ubuntu keeps trying to suspend the machine randomly for no reason. I had him disable suspend in the BIOS because the computer was just suspending sporadically. Now he gets a popup that says "Failed to Suspend, the computer failed to suspend. The failure was reported as cannot suspend"
He is running a custom Ubuntu distro I made. I have this same distro running on dozens of other computers with no issues. I can't figure out why this is happening. Is there anyway I can completely disable anything that would make the computer suspend from the CLI? Or where are the logs that I can look at to see what may be causing this? I can SSH into his machine but nothing more.

Dec 14, 2010I'm currently trying to learn how to get around Blender, but I keep running into the same problem. Blender relies heavily on shortcuts and keystrokes to navigate it's GUI, but very often they clash with the shortcuts on my desktop. The result is that the desktop shortcut wins, making Blender impossible to use effectively.
Is there any way to disable the desktop shortcuts temporarily while using the software, and then setting them back when I'm done?

The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? (set the default boot to command-prompt). Also, does anyone have tips on packages I c an safely remove to clear up space and memory? (Like: openoffice, Evolution,Rhythmbox etc. are very obvious, but maybe some more hidden services and alike? Networkmanager e.g.?)
Software :: Disable Desktop Effects On Mandriva Without Reaching It?
Feb 13, 2009I successfully Installed nvidia graphics driver version 173.14.12 for Geforce FX5200 on Mandriva 2008 (It couldn't find a precompiled header, so built the driver against devel) .
It worked OK, everything became faster(than not having a driver) and OpenGL games were acceptable too.
Then I enabled 3D desktop effects (to it's medium level), it said it should log off, it did and restarted X server and then (autologin) Gnome didn't come. It's the screen in loading desktop, and cursor shows "working in background"(busy but shows the cursor itself too).
I'm not very interested in 3D effects, I just wanted to see how it is, now I want to know how to get it back.
I tried to go through Alt+Ctrl+F1 and close the program supposed to do 3D effects, or restart to runlevel 3 and change XF86Config but nothing seemed relative to 3D effects.

Dec 30, 2008I have researched this particular problem for a couple of days now, and have explored some of the suggested solutions without success, other than learning much more about Linux. I am hoping someone can offer some good advice.I am working on a kiosk right now and as part of the application, I need to disable the Print Screen keyboard button. I have used 'xmodmap' to map keycode 111 to NoSymbol, but that is not stopping the Snapshot dialog from appearing. I am using OpenSuSE 10.3 with a GNOME desktop on an IBM PC with a Logitech USB keyboard. I have tried swapping the keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard to see if that was the problem, but it was not.
The strange thing is that when I use VNC 4.1.3 Free Edition to remote into this system from another IBM PC (Windows XP Pro OS), I am able to use the xmodmap -e "keycode 111 =NoSymbol" command to successfully prevent the Snapshot dialog from appearing.Is there some kind of keyboard mapping override or shortcut mapping going on here when I am logged into the Linux box locally, but is not happening remotely?

Tried to reinstall original nVidia drives, didn't helped.Also tried gnome desktop, snow begins after login.In vesa mode working fine 800x600, and I don't think that is related to video card, it should be big coincidence.
Ubuntu :: Disable Showing Of Mounted Volumes On Desktop And In Nautilus Sidebar?
May 1, 2010I have a bit unusual request.
There are three partitions on my hard drive. Two of them were assigned to mount points / and /home during system installation. The third one was left intact.
After installation the first two partitions were automatically integrated into directory tree and there was a shortcut on the Nautilus sidebar for the third one. Then, I registered the third partition in /etc/fstab for automounting at /home/user/Data directory. For now it works fine, the volume is mounted on startup. But I still have the shortcut to this volume in Nautilus sidebar and icon on my Desktop.
I am interested, if it is possible to disable showing of this items on Desktop and in Nautilus to make the third partition look like registered at system setup time.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Video With 11.4 32 Bit & The Intel 865 Graphics Controller - Disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz?
May 1, 2011Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

Nov 25, 2010As a Security practice I wanted to disable X from loading.
So i modified following line from /etc/inittab.
I was then able to start my machine in terminal mode(runlevel 3).
I wasn't satisfied at this stage as i was able to get the graphical console by merely typing

So i search and find out that the reason for loading the graphical user interface was a script resided in

So i renamed it thinking OS will fail in finding it when invoked by inittab file . To my surprise i was able to get the terminal back even if i hit
But then i realize i keep on getting following error lines.

I found out the reason behind this was a line in /etc/inittab

Since the file prefdm was renamed and respawned the OS was keep on trying to execute it considering it is terminated.
Now i have made the above line commented and removed execute bit of the file. System is now behaving as i wish it would.
Will it make any difference? I m not using any application that explicitly use graphical user interface and i can work in runlevel 3.
