General :: Create Distro Without Using One Of The Roll?

Jul 15, 2010

Need info on how to create my own linux distro without using one of the roll your own sites. I would like to get the kernel and other packages together like xorg and so on to make my own distro. Does anyone know of a good source of information? Most of the info I'm running across is roll your own sites with a variation of their distro.

Debian :: Create Lenny Repository From Distro CD's?

Apr 28, 2010

I have been unlucky searching Google and this site concerning this and hope that someone on here has either done this before or could point me in the right direction. I have a computer on my network that I want to use as a local repository for apt. I've got the set of Debian Lenny 5.04 CD's and would like to know how to put all of the packages from those CD's onto this computer and then use it as a local source for my Debian computers to get packages from. The CD's appear to hold all of the packages in the folder /pool if that helps at all.

OpenSUSE Install :: Create A Live Multi-distro Usb?

I'd like to put both the 32-bit and 64-bit OSS 11.3 onto a 2GB usb stick from their respective Live CD ISOs. I tried to make a partitions on the usb ( 1GB ) each, and then dd each ISO to separate partitions, make 1 of the partition bootable. But that doesn't work, even from the bootable partition. Any suggestions how to achieve that goal? Ideally there would be a main boot loader, which then provides option to boot each of the distro.

Ubuntu :: Create Install Disc Of Your Custom Distro

I have a question that I can't find anything about online. I have spent the last few months creating and customizing a Kubuntu OS for my company and we want to install it on roughly 45 computers (all different models). Is there a way to save my creation to a cd so it can be installed on another computer?

I know about creating an image of the HDD but what I want to do is create what you would get in the store from Microsoft. A complete OS on a CD, ready to install with all of my configuration changes already setup.

General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?

Dec 15, 2010

Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).

LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.

OpenSUSE :: How To Roll Back Part Of An Update

Sep 25, 2010

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop x86_64

The most recent update that produced the kernel version above is bit of a disaster for me. The open source radeon driver does not work with VirtualBox (it crashes at startup), and the ATI fglrx driver either builds without acceleration (or the X server loads it that way?) or fails to build.

Is there a way to undo some (or all, if necessary) of the update?

Networking :: Why Doesn't Distro 9.0 Setup Work For 13.1 Distro?

Sep 6, 2010

I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.

This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.

Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.

I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).

I would like to just rollback the updates so that i can use my vmware again.. as i must transfer cad files to the pc with usb. Autodesk only works in windows so vmware has been a blessing as i dont have to reboot every time i need to work on drawings!

Server :: After Log Roll, Postfix Cannot Write To Log File, Ubuntu 8.04?

Feb 9, 2009

After the syslog facility rolls logs weekly, the Postfix cannot seem to write properly to the mail.log file. What I don't quite understand is that Postfix is still able to write the following error to the log file: ..."status=deferred (temporary failure. Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/mail.log: Permission denied )"It is my understanding that Postfix uses several different processes to write to log files, but I'm confused as to why it is able to write errors to the log but not able to write when sending/receiving mail. After I chmod 777 the mail.log file, Postfix slowly clears the queue and the mails are then received. Everything functions fine for another week, until the logs roll again.

Debian Installation :: Remove All Sid Packages And Roll Back To Lenny?

Jun 7, 2010

I added Sid to my /etc/apt/sources.list, so that I could install KDE4 (as described on some random KDE4/Debian web page). However, I now think that was a mistake and it would have been better to attempt to backport KDE4 onto Lenny. Over time, more and more sid packages have crept into the system to resolve dependencies, and now my system seems a bit broken; 'top' won't run, complains about missing libtermcap which is there, my cron jobs seem to be ignored and so on.

So given a system that is a mix of Lenny and Sid, what is the best way to uninstall all the Sid packages and then get back to a clean Lenny install? Is there some way that I can list all Sid packages, maybe to a file, then use that to tell apt what Lenny packages to install after sources.list has been updated to remove Sid?

I kept a log as the system was built, of everything that had to be manually set up after the debian installer has completed when I moved from 32-bit to 64-bit, so I could just do a clean install of Lenny then reconstruct the system from scratch. However, would much prefer to use the package management tools to revert to a clean Lenny.

Ubuntu :: Ultra Low Video Mode / Roll Back Changes I Made?

In an attempt to install specific video drivers for the Intel 845 chipset, I followed the instructions here: http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/a...ntu-10-04.html

Now, the system will only boot in recovery mode, and then at 640x480 resolution. When booting, it gives the option to return to default or manually configure, but if I try to select either option and click OK, nothing happens. Once in the GUI, it shows no proprietary hardware drivers installed. Is there a way to roll back the changes I made, or return to more default settings without reinstalling the OS?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Open Different Audio File Tracks Into The Same Piano Roll?

Mar 24, 2010

My question would be this: is it possible to open different audio file tracks into the same piano roll, or even open multiple piano roll instances at the same time? If the answer is "no", then does anyone know a good LADSPA sampler plugin? Basically, I need to be able to load multiple samples into the same instrument and have them set to a range on the keyboard, similar to what the advanced sampler in Reason does.

Having multiple samples in the beat editor is not the same, as I need to control the note off (without re-loading the sample and just changing the end time, that is too cumbersome). If any of this seems weird I should specify that I am making breakcore music where drum beat samples are highly manipulated and a piano roll for each sample is just going to be too annoying to program.

Ubuntu :: Installed 10.04 - When Pitch/roll The Joysticks The Mouse Cursor Also Moves

May 8, 2010

So right after I installed 10.04 there seems to be some short of mouse/joystick mess. What I mean is that 2 types of joysticks (Saitek x52 and CH Products Yoke) seems to control the mouse as well! So when I pitch/roll the joysticks the mouse cursor also moves. When I move the middle lever of the CH products yoke, the mouse also moves horizontally. Also it is almost impossible to work with the scroll bars of windows as joysticks interacts with them via the cursor and issues botton clikcs scrolling the bars to the end! This looks to be a new issue on 10.04 as 9.10 had no such issue.
