General :: Conky Feeding A Line Of Crap?

Oct 10, 2010

i started messing around with conky. its really neat and i like making new configurations and what not, just for fun. the thing is, the other day i was playing around with the 'cpu' variables (cpu, cpubar, cpuguage) normally if you wanted to see the usage of say cpu0 or cpu1 you could call the variable as ${cpu cpu0} or ${cpu cpu1} respectively. well i input ${cpu5} (obviously i dont have 5 cpu's) well it still gave me output as if it was showing me the usage of that cpu. can any of you guys explain this. it also works for other parameters as well. is conky just showing me a bunch of random graphs and percentages or when i called that imaginary cpu does it default to a certain one. these are the only two answers i can come up with on my own.

General :: Feeding Input To Interactive Programs In Bash?

Aug 30, 2010

If I have an interactive program, e.g top, which, after launch, can be fed with key strokes and changes its behavior, for example, after launching top and then pressing "1", you can see the CPU utilization per core. I was wondering if there is a programmatical way to do so, so I don't have to press "1" every time. I would think it is an easy task, but so far my attempts have failed.

General :: 'clear Out' All The Old/cached Crap From RAM/SWAP To Free Up Space?

Jul 21, 2010

Closest analogy I can compare what I want to, is like the `sync` command, which writes out all stuff in the disk buffers, freeing the buffers.Instead of disk buffers, I want to 'clean out' my RAM and SWAP of any/all junk that's accumulated in there over the time my PC has been up. I've long wondered about this, but never asked, though I recall searching around several times..When I first boot it cold and log in, the memory usage bar on my desktop is near zero, and the swap is empty. But after a week or 2 or 3 or more of uptime, and with Firefox always running with a dozen tabs or so at any given time, I end up with all the memory full or 'filled with cached stuff', and the swap space is filled to capacity.Curiousity: I blame Firefox for leaking memory, but even if that's still the case today (historically it was) can this all be blamed on Firefox? Or what-all causes this, besides Firefox- just..Everything?

Here's current stats:

Code:

sasha@reactor: uptime
21:21:42 up 30 days, 10:07, 3 users, load average: 0.02, 0.05, 0.01
sasha@reactor: free
total used free shared buffers cached

[code]...

So, 3.8 of 4 Gib of RAM is occupied, and the 1 Gib swap space is jammed full 100%. This must slow things down to some degree, yes? I mean, the kernel does have to keep track of this, right?Of course closing all the applications doesn't make a difference (not an appreciable one anyhow) and the only way I have found to start fresh is to reboot.

Ubuntu :: Create A Moving Mocp-feed Line In Conky?

Apr 12, 2011

I've been using the command line music player moc for some time now & am in love with it. So, I thought it'd be nice if I can add a current track info feed to my conky display. Therefore, I have this smple script that gets the track info from mocp -i .

Code:
#!/bin/sh
TITLE="`mocp -i | grep 'Title:' | sed -e 's/^.*: //'`";
if [ "$TITLE" != "" ]; then
ARTIST="`mocp -i | grep 'Artist:' | sed -e 's/^.*: //'`";
code....

But here comes the point. The way the track info is shown feels kind of blunt. I was wondering if something can be done either in the script or in conkyrc so that the track info is shown in a single line, moving backward at a constant speed; like you know, news channels show news strips at the bottom of the screen .

Programming :: Bash: Feeding Input To A Script From A Text File?

Nov 17, 2010

I have a script which checks on my jobs that run on some cluster.The script, "script.sh", takes as an input the job-id for the job to be checked. Sometimes I have 100s of jobs and I want to check them all (for successful completion.) I could put these job-ids into a text file, "job-id.txt", each id in its own line.For each job-id, the script would ask me few questions (with a yes or no answers) to see if I want to do some other checks for each job-id.I want to know how may I direct my job-ids from this text file into the script one job-id at a time.

Ubuntu :: Panel Looks Crap If Not Default Size?

May 8, 2010

I usually change the default bottom panel settings so that I have it on the right hand edge of the screen, 100 pixels wide and auto hide checked. Until now, this has been fine, but with ubuntu 10.4, it has an awful banded look.

So, I tried using a solid colour and a custom background image and although this improves matters, there is still a banded section at the top that should not be there. When you have a few apps running, the taskbar shows the active app normally, but the background apps are banded again. Is there a way to fix this? It also makes the apps difficult to read.

Fedora Servers :: Asterisk On F11 With Twinkle & Ekiga - Jitters - Cannot Get Crap Like Gtk-recordmydesktop To Produce Sound

Oct 5, 2009

i just had to switch from 10 to 11 until 12 comes out, and after setting up asterisk, i noticed VERY VERY BAD sound quality, mostly comprised of severe jittering. I noticed that the way Fedora lets you work with your sound devices in 11 is way different (nicer, but obviously not complete) than ever before, and i am using the same asterisk configs as before, so i'm positive that this is NOT an asterisk issue, and does NOT really belong in this forum; however, only asterisk users will be able to replicate or identify with this issue.

Have any of you 11 users had this happen to you, and if so, did you figure out how to solve it? I'm sure that i can *try* adjusting asterisks jitter buffer settings, but like i said, it was NEVER an issue before 11... Another clue would be that i cannot get crap like gtk-recordmydesktop to produce sound (but that may very well be another issue; however i doubt it)...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tuner Card Not Feeding Sound Through Onboard Sound?

Aug 9, 2011

I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.

Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.

Fedora :: USB Headset Is "feeding Back" Through The Microphone?

My Logitech USB headset has been with me for *years* (since Fedora 10 and before, when I used to use Windows XP!) and it was always fine, but since I updated to Fedora 14 I can hear my own voice, really loudly, whenever I plug it in. I never had this problem before, I've ignored it for a while, but now it's starting to p*** me off. I can't listen to music without hearing myself breathing in the background! Really annoying...

how to fix this? I suspect it's a PulseAudio problem, but haven't been able to click my way around it...
