General :: Collect The Count Of The Reboots That Occur Of Servers?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a pool of approximately 1,000 Linux servers and I would like to get a total count of reboots that occurred on those servers each month. I would like to collect this reboot count at the end of each month. Can anyone tell me what the best way to get this count.

General :: Create A *one* Line Command That, Using Tar, Will Collect The Full /usr/local Directory?

Oct 6, 2010

I am currently interning at a place and my job is to essentially learn UNIX. My supervisor gives me problems here and there to help guide me with my learning but for the most part I'm doing this all by self-teaching myself. Needless to say I have run into a few obstacles...for instance-Create a *one* line command that, using tar, will collect the full /usr/local directory (you need to run this as root again) and copy the whole /usr/local structure under /optFor example /usr/local/bin/hello will become /opt/local/bin/hello, etc. I want this as follows:1. /usr/local is collected by tar, but the output of this tar command is its stdout.. what you get from the previous stdout, you compress with gzip and send it to stdout again 3. get this output and decompress with gzip.. get this output and pipe to tar in a way that will extract the tree under /opt.If anyone knows how I could go about doing this, please let me know, or at the very least point me in the right direction. What I've got so far (which could be completely wrong) is:tar cvf - usr/local/ | gzip -c - | gunzip -c - | tar xvf -in theory I feel like this should work (except for extracting the tree under /opt...i'm kinda stuck there)

General :: At What Point Does Wireless Connection Occur

Mar 3, 2010

I have just purchased my first Linux PC - up to now I have always rolled my own so to speak. It is a little Dell Latitude 2100 which I got a good deal on through the outlet store - a refurb but it looks new. Ubuntu 9.04. It has built in wireless and I have gotten it to talk to my D-Link router although only with WEP and not yet WPA - that will come later.

When is the wireless connection supposed to occur? If I reboot the PC and watch for it to connect (using ping from another machine on the network) it does not appear until I login to it. It remains on the network after I logout(?) Is this normal? I am used to hard wired machines which come up on the network before a user logs in. Is there something I need to change in the network connection settings?

General :: Pipe Kernel Messages To Another Process As They Occur

Apr 13, 2011

I have an OLED screen on my laptop that I have configured to show status information. The current driver I have installed in Linux for it is able to display messages by sending them to a script as an argument separated by spaces.Example: the command /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh Hi Everybody "Hello World" displays on the oled screen:

Hi
Everybody
Hello World

If another message is sent before the old ones disappear and it reverts to status info, it pushes off the top message. Example: less than 30 seconds after the previous example, /opt/asusg50oled/utils/notify.sh "Bananas have potassium" is executed:

Everybody
Hello World
Bananas have potassium

What I want to do is have kernel messages (the kind you see by running dmesg) forwarded to this script. For example, when I insert a USB drive, the following information would show on the OLED screen as they're logged:........

Fedora Servers :: FC5 > F12 - ERROR: Column Count Of Mysql.db Is Wrong

Jan 31, 2010

Target F12 mysql - 5.1.42-2
Source FC 5 mysql - 5.0.27-1

I've put SElinux into permissive mode as it was practically denying anything that moved. Both installed from the standard repos. I used mysql-administrator to create a backup of the FC5 server (all databases/tables) and transferred it to the new system. I restored it onto that machine and double checked that my standard admin user (full privs) was present and let me log in to make changes. All good so far.

So I copied over my files from my sites, point a browser at them and I get nothing, not even errors. Now it's a long while since I set the original up and have probably forgotten something simple but despite making the error output more verbose I can't seem to track anything down other than:

[Code]....

So it suggests my tables are invalid/trashed but I can't seem to figure out why. The original server is still running happily so I'm not in any rush to fix this, I'll keep plodding, Phpinfo reveals a normal operational php setup, so i think that side of the sites is functional. Apache test pages work on blank virtual hosts but viewing my sites reveals the favicon working fine but otherwise comepletely blank pages (zero output, even source). I tried running the page as a raw CLI input to the php package using php index.php and php returned nothing, logged nothing unusual but sat with my CPU at 100%, unsure if that is related.

Ubuntu :: Collect Multiple Windows In One?

i wondered if there is no gnome Software with it would be possible to "Collect" multiple Windows together.

As 4 Terminals or 2 Terminals and a gedit.

I dont think about tabbed views, i think about viewing them side by side. I know that it would be _possible_ to this by hand, but it would be *much* easier doing this with an application. I often want to see 4 terminals at a time and its really unhandy to do this by hand

Networking :: Tcp_probe Doesn't Collect All The Data?

May 2, 2011

modprobe tcp_probe port=5001
chmod 444 /proc/net/tcpprobe
cat /proc/net/tcpprobe >/tmp/tcpprobe.out &
TCPCAP=$!

[Code]....

I did the test with iperf for 10, 20, 40 100 and 200 seconds but the plot only showed the first 20 seconds in all of the tests. I checked the tcpprobet.out log and y saw that 2048 entries are registered, no matter if the test was for 20 or 200 seconds.

General :: Ubuntu Reboots While Installing?

Feb 15, 2011

I've been trying to get Ubuntu on my computer for months now and after having googled no relevant cases which may help me I would like some help.

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my computer (which already has windows and I don't want to lose it yet)

I have already burnt 3 CDs yet the problem is the same each time, that's why I believe the problem does not come from the burning. I checked the md5sum and there was no problem.

However when I try to install Ubuntu (or sometimes during a live session) after partitionning my computer and selecting mounting points, having "format" checked on the concerned partitions, the installation goes halfway through the "copying files" process and my computer simply reboots. More precisely, in the middle of installation the screen is replaced with the loading page of Ubuntu (like when you start with the live CD) then my computer reboots, no questions asked (not even to remove the CD, it reboots with the CD in it... while during a manual shutdown it would open the tray and ask you to close it)

General :: Autostart An Application After CentOS 4.4 Reboots

Jan 28, 2010

I am fairly new to linux. We have a machine running CentOS 4.4 and sometimes the machine has to be rebooted. Each time after the reboot, I have to SSH in and manually restart one of our application. I have been reading about doing this online and I am a little confuse.Seems like there are multiple possibilities for starting things up. My finding suggest using the inittab file. Then my question is what runlevel do I pass in? Should I use runlevel 1, 2, 3, or 5? Once the runlevel is determine, then how should I name my startup script? I know to use "S" but what number should I give it? Or, another way to approach this is to put my autostart script in the /etc/rc.local file?

so I went

yum install perl-DBD-mysql

then

nano perl.pl

Why can't perl find Mysql.pm? I guess because it doesn't exist as I ran find / -name Mysql.pm, and also could not find it.

shouldn't that file have been created and thus exist after I install perl-DBD-mysql?

General :: Unclean Shutdown / Reboots - Check Forced On Start-up

May 23, 2011

unclean shutdowns/reboots. Whenever I boot/restart, I notice the message "/dev/hdb1 (and hdb2) was not cleanly unmounted, check forced." Then fsck(?) scans them without errors, and everything continues normally. FWIW, hdb1 @ hdb2 are ext2, /boot & /tmp respectively, whereas all other partitions are ext3. Could that (ext2) be why? I checked halt, reboot, umountfs, umountnfs.sh, and umountroot in /etc/init.d, and nothing jumped out at me, though I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at/for.

General :: Recursively Count All The Files In A Directory?

Oct 12, 2010

I have a really deep directory tree on my Linux box. I would like to count all of the files in that path, including all of the subdirectories.

For instance, given this directory tree:

/home/blue
/home/red
/home/dir/green
/home/dir/yellow
/home/otherDir/

If I pass in /home, I would like for it to return 4 files. Or, bonus points if it returns 4 files, 2 directories. Basically, I want the equivalent of right-clicking a folder on Windows and selecting properties and seeing how many files/folders are contained in that folder.

How can I most easily do this? I have a solution involving a Python script I wrote, but why isn't this as easy as running ls | wc or similar?
