General :: Unclean Shutdown / Reboots - Check Forced On Start-up

unclean shutdowns/reboots. Whenever I boot/restart, I notice the message "/dev/hdb1 (and hdb2) was not cleanly unmounted, check forced." Then fsck(?) scans them without errors, and everything continues normally. FWIW, hdb1 @ hdb2 are ext2, /boot & /tmp respectively, whereas all other partitions are ext3. Could that (ext2) be why? I checked halt, reboot, umountfs, umountnfs.sh, and umountroot in /etc/init.d, and nothing jumped out at me, though I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at/for.
If I issue a shutdown -rF now, it will force e2fsck's on all the volumes when it reboots. But once the checks automatically finish, does it restart normally? I want to run e2fsck's on all my volumes, but dont want to stay the probably 5 hours it will run, so hoping someone knows for sure what happens.
Background you can skip: I have an old Dell laptop, an Inspiron 2650, which I use primarily as an internet terminal at home. I have switched back and forth between XP and different Ubuntu releases, and Lubuntu is what I am running with now. At some point I upgraded and the hardware support for my laptop broke. I have done multiple clean installs, and using any 10.04 Ubuntu distribution I have to disable ACPI in the Grub settings, or else my mouse and kb will not work. So...
Question: Since the OS shutdown feature can't turn off the laptop power with ACPI disabled, I often hit the laptop power button and skip the shutdown process entirely. Most of the time I am only running Chrome, so I am not worried about losing or corrupting local data. Is there any valid reason why this would be a problem? Does the shutdown process do anything important enough to justify the hassle?
I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite L355-S7905 Intel Celeron Processor 585 @ 2.16 Ghz, Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset. 4GB of Memory, 160 GB HD. Tri-boot: Windows 7, Unbutu 10.04 and Fedora 12.
Here is what happened: I had a hard/forced shutdown while using Ubuntu 10.04. Some warning text flashed on the screen before it went blank and I could not read it. Now when I turn on my laptop it freezes on the Toshiba set up screen. I can not go to the F2 setup, I can not go to the F12 boot seqence and I can not use F8 safe mode. Also the ESC button had no effect.
I have tried turning it on with the Win 7 cd in the drive but nothing. The same when I put my Ubuntu 10.04 cd in the drive, nothing. My guess is that the forced shutdown messed up the bootfile/grub order. The harddrive runs for a few seconds then stops. Should I attack the problem from a Windows view point or a Ubuntu view point?
I experienced what i perceive as the craziest thing during 2 years of using ubuntu. About some months ago, I have two ubuntu installed on my HP-mini netbook: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit (CAElinux) and kubuntu 10.04, and run without problem.
One day, the netbook's battery run out of charge and I forgot to plug it in. The ubuntu, as usual, went to hibernate, but without harddisk noise, so I forced it to shutdown by pressing power button (as i think it is not normal). What happened later was the partition of 10.04 was broken, it could not boot, it even affected another partition as the netbook couldn't boot kubuntu 10.04.
I try to run liveUSB and CD of both distro and the liveCD/USB boot stopped on loading screen. So I try another linux distro: PCLinuxOS, which was able to boot but took very long time. The partition of ubuntu 10.04 could not be accessed.
After installing PClinuxOS in replace of kubuntu, I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition and the partition was fixed, I could access the partition and could load to ubuntu 10.04, but it took very long time. Here how it loaded: first: blank screen with blinking cursor, then ubuntu load screen, then back to blank screen with blinking cursor, then it showed numbers and sentences, like some scanning works. It took long time before login screen appeared (about 10-15 minute, while the prevously normal boot time in my netbook was less than 1 minute), but once its done, the ubuntu worked normally. This also the case in the PClinuxOS and the reason it load very slowly.
After this, I try to boot the liveUSB of various linux distro, and found some could boot while the others not:
Able to load with unusual slow boot time: PClinuxOS (latest) Ubuntu 8.04 Fedora (latest) Linuxmint 8 (based on ubuntu 9)
Can't load ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 kubuntu 10.04 latest linuxmint
The liveUSB boot could take 1 hour. I also try the latest Puppy, Gentoo and OpenSuse liveUSB but it couldn't boot, and it likely the liveUSB problem. I made the all the liveUSB with unetbootin. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint could not boot even after I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition. There was no problem with the liveUSB as it would load normally on another computer. I think it is just the variant of ubuntu 10 that is not being able to boot.
I was not content on this slow boot, so I try to format the two partition of ubuntu and PClinuxOS (there are another partitions though), and installed ubuntu 8. But it also happened to boot slowly as the previous ubuntu. Then I replaced it with linuxmint 8, and the same occurred. So I try to install windows on another partition, and it boot normally.
The question is, what is happening. Why do the forced-shutdown-of-ubuntu-10.04 affect another partition, to the boot of another distro? If my HD was broken, the Windows would load very slowly too right? Yes, in SMART Data (from disk utility) it showed "few bad sector", but i think this is not related to the slow boot. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint cannot boot until this moment. I am thinking there are some informations planted on my computer, that twist it to load some distro slowly, and prevent it to load some others. But where and what? (I almost arrived to the thought that this is supernatural!)
Because of my long story up there (as I think it must be reported), the conclusion is: 1. Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook was forced shutdown (by me) 2. It caused the partition broken 3. After fixing the partition (by scan, but I forgot the command), it took very long time to boot, but the ubuntu itself run normally 4. It also affected the boot of another distro (slow down the boot time), but Ms.Windows boot time is normal 5. It also caused ubuntu 10 (and its variant) to not be able to boot from liveCD/USB 6. It also caused me going crazy
Now im gonna format the whole HD in hope of ubuntu 10.04 (and later) could boot again, but shall it fix the problem? (as formatting the previously ubuntu 10.04 partition did not solve the problem). Or should I buy another HD (or even computer) to install natty!
I've been googling my brains out looking for a solution to this. So far, nothing.
As the title suggests, every time I attempt to shut the computer down it instantly reboots the moment the internal fans stop whirring.
So far I've tried:
-shutting down via the terminal (this actually makes the reboot happen instantly rather than waiting for the fans to stop)
-looking in the BIOS for any obvious settings which may be causing this
-performing a dpkg repair
-Allowing "Proposed" updates in the Updater
-installing (slightly) older Kernel (2.6.35-22 as opposed to 2.6.35-23)
-installing newer (2.6.36) kernel
I know others are having this issue, but other threads I've read seem to have fizzled out with no conclusion. Has anyone managed to find a way to make this work if they've had the bug?
Any advice at all? Is it worth trying an even older kernel? Or an even older version of Linux?
I have a newly installed CentOS 5.4 which is having shutdown problem, if I try "shutdown -h now", the machine will poweroff then reboot instead of poweroff completely. how to debug this problem?

I am trying to set up a somewhat older Dell as a test box. I installed Fedora 13 on it. When I attempt to shut down the system, it reboots and powers back on. I have attempted shutdown using the GUI, and variations of shutdown, init and halt. All of these result in the PC powering back on. The only way for me to power off the system is to press and hold the power button.
I'm just curious - why do all linux distros (all I've seen) run their periodic disk checks during boot? I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.
Once a while, during boot, Debian forces checking of hard disks. I understand that's a wise thing to do. However, I wonder what you could do to abort such process and postpone it to next boot (let's suppose you are in a hurry and you have switched on your computer only for a quick glimpse to a document).
I have used ubuntu 8.04 in a dual boot system together with windows xp and wanted to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.
Since the upgrade did not work (the usr partition was to small and I couldn't make it big enough) I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 edition and tried to install it.
Everything worked find during the installation process but when I tried to start ubuntu I could only see the ubuntu desktop for a second and then the computer began to reboot.
Then I thought that I can solve this problem by installing ubuntu 8.04.4 again and trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04.
After the installation I could start ubuntu 8.04.4 without problems but after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 the same problem occurs again: ubuntu 10.04 causes the computer to reboot every time I try to start ubuntu.
I upgraded to 11.04 yesterday, and now gdm refuses to start. It actually reboots the machine, so it goes into an infinite loop of reboots if left alone. This happens even if I choose the previous kernel I had been using in grub. Safe mode allows me to boot to a terminal, and a USB flash drive boot still works.Is there a way for me to dig into the logs to find out what is causing this?

1. Just to confirm, I need to place the above in a file with #!/bin/bash at the top and make it executable.
2. How do I know when the VMs have safely shut down so I can start the copy? I guess I can either a. wait a specified amount of time b. run some sort of if statement to confirm they are off.
3. How do I use Rsync or cp to copy to the backup folder?
4. How will I know the copy is complete so that I can start the VMs again?

I have an Ubuntu server in which a file is dumped every hour and a new file for the next hour and the process continues. If there is any problem due to which the creation of file stops then empty files are created every minute till the process is killed & started again. Ubuntu uninstalled OOo and installed LibreOffice. What a piece of ----! I'm having trouble killing X server and keeping access to the console. I'm trying to install an Nvidia driver so that I can use OpenGL with Geant4. To install the driver, I need X server to be off.I Googled, and found a lot of things about runlevels that no longer apply in 10.04, since inittab has been removed, and that the runlevel now defaults to 2.
I tried CTRL + ALT + Backspace, but that just boots me to the GUI login prompt. In earlier versions of Ubuntu, I would set the default runlevel to 3, but since I'm already at 2, that seems to be as low as I need to go. I tried it in runlevel 1, but the installer warned me about the possibility of needing daemons that would otherwise be running. So in summary, I just need to be able to kill the X server and keep using the console on the current run level. If anyone knows how I can do that in 10.04,
no problems until yesterday it won't let me logon.i get "could not start kstartupconfig - check your inst" i have neither downloaded nor installed anything recently nor have i knowingly made any changes i can logon as root it was suggested that i create a new user which i did and i can logon with this new identity it was suggested that i tried repair in mepis user assistant but my original logon name does not appear in the user list however when i tried to create a user identity using that name, i was told i couldn't as it already existed.

I cannot locate shutdown log for Linux shutdown to check various activities carried out during shutdown. I can view Startup Log which is availble on console>Applications>System Tools>System Logs.
I have included Shutdown/Startup in dbora, so that Oracle 10gR2 Shutdown/Startup will be automated during OS Shutdown/Startup.
I want to check Shutdown log because Oracle Shutdown was not running, as from $ORACLE_HOME/shutdown.log contains no entries, where as startup log contains latest startup details.
That means here 2 issues are there. One, I want to locate OS Shutdown Log and the other being Why Oracle Shutdown not getting executed.
Sometimes when I shutdown Ubuntu 10.10 and try to turn on the desktop PC it fails. I then have to disconnect tower from the power source and plug it in after waiting a few minutes. This problem first started in Ubuntu 9.10. I have a hunch that it happens because I am shutting down with applications open.
I was told that this is a batter issue on my motherboard, but I've replaced it and still have issues.
I've just installed F15 KDE Edition, and as the title tells, I need to keep pressing F2 and/or Enter to make the system go through the boot up process, otherwise it freezes as long as i keep it without my interference !! and then it takes relatively long time to start the GUI, and when I switch to the console (using ALT + CTRL + F3 for example) and try to write the login or the password, there seem to be some 'bouncing' effect, that if I'm to write the login 'root', I get something like 'rrooott' ... however, this doesn't happen in the GUI .....
I have a multiboot system, with Windows7 and Linux Mint (based on ubuntu 10.4) installed along side. While Windows7 doesn't have any problem with my hardware, Linux mint has also some issues that cause the performance of media players to degrade (sound and video tearing) and cause repeated freezes to some applications (a game actually, 'wesnoth') until I press a key or move the mouse.
I have AMD Athlon 7750 dual core 2.7 GHz system, with 3GB DDR2 800 Ram, and embedded ATI Radeon HD 3200 with about 512 shared memory.
one more thing, when I booted off the live image to run the install program, I booted into the video failsafe mode (not sure of the exact name, but I think you got it, no mode setting) and passed the option 'noapic', so I suppose this options are still passed whenever I boot mysystem, as I get the text version of the progress bar during startup, rather then the graphical fedora logo ( i.e no mode setting) ..
After power off the Gnome desktop environment does not start on my machine. It never gets past the splash screen with Fedora logo.The OS boots, and I can ssh and even run graphical applications, such as Thunderbird, remotely. No errors are reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There are errors reported in .xsession-errors (attached) but I do not now how to recover from them
