General :: Making Tar File From Folder - Unknown Option

Aug 6, 2010

I am trying to make my first tar file in linux. I am trying to make a tar file from a folder (with all subfolders and files) and using several commands I got several errors!

This is the tar usage:
tar [-]{txruc}[eONvVwAfblhm{op}][0-7[lmh]] [tapefile] [blocksize] [[-C directory] file] ...

Some of my attempts and responses:
tar -czf itic_glb_cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
response: tar: z: unknown option (not using 'z' again!)
tar -cf itic-glb-cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
response: tar: cannot stat itic-glb-cognity. Not dumped.

The last ones repeats for all the next attempts:
tar -cf itic-glb-cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity
tar -cf iticglbcognity06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
(full path + name without spaces) tar -cf iticglbcognity06082010.tar.gz /epos/webbus/bea/user_projects/domains/itic-glb-cognity

For some of the above a 10kb file was created, where the expected file would be about 250MB. I dont think it has anything to do with the user's rights, because I think I have them all.

General :: Linpus Lite - Change File / Folder Permissions?

Aug 19, 2010

I own an Acer Aspire One which has Linpus Lite installed. Last night I attempted to delete a couple of files only to find they are read only and that I cannot change the permissions by right clicking and changing the drop down menu from read only.

These aren't protected files or anything, they are files I've downloaded or created myself (one using the onboard web cam to test it).

I attempted to play with Terminal for a bit but as a newbie I got easily lost, not like I can fall back on command prompt knowledge from Windows!

I think it's somehow connected with the user which accesses these docs or tries to change the permissions. I also tried with an su- which meant I was using Terminal as root, however, I wasn't sure how I could then set the permissions for a particular file/folder within the file system.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Trivial Option For Folder Sharing Over Internet?

Apr 12, 2010

been looking for a easy way for simple users (newbies) to share folders over the internet with friends. I found almost nothing about it, in both Windows and Ubuntu, as people usually recommend online sharing (as dropbox and Ubuntu One, which is not what I ask for) or ssh, ftp and related, which are usually not trivial to set up for simple user and you need to install a nice GUI for the client. Why isn't there a simple way as a right-click menu option, then choosing some user/password and having it available over some iport? Something like local network file sharing. This seems like an incredible tool to have.

Server :: Change Of Apache Httpd.conf Doesn't Work On CentOS/RedHat?

Jun 30, 2010

I've been trying to make install apache 2.1.8 and php 5.2.3 and work on them. After updating and installing some dependence files, apache and php could both be installed.

Then I tried to configure them. I added the following content to the end of Apache httpd.conf:

Code:

Then I run /path/to/apachectl start, and saw the message:

Quote:

Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

Then I remembered that I didn't include the rewrite module while making install apache. So I removed the 2 lines I just added to httpd.conf.

But, after running /path/to/apachectl stop and start again, I could still see:

Code:

When I use firefox to open http://host_ip:8080/, I could see "It works!". But when I open http://host_ip:8080/hello.php (the file is already under htdocs), firefox said
Quote:

Failed to Connect

Why and how to solve it?

I noticed that for some stupid reason, the conf file wasn't updated at all and the 2 erroneous lines were still there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot: How To Change The Default Option

Oct 3, 2010

I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.

It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:

1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),

2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista! As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option). Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?
