Be so kind to tell me where to better ask this question, as I'm really not finding the right words to google for.So, I have a shell application (fdb) which is a Flash debugger. I want to run it using bash script, capture it's output and pass it the commands (it can read from STDIN). The reason I want to do so is that Flash Builder (the IDE for Flash development) is plain stupid when it comes to compilation, and it won't allow me to compile any file in the project... so, I found out that I can make Eclipse to run an external tool. This external tool is my *.sh file whichches the compiler, and then it launches the debugger.The Eclipse console can display the compilation results, or errors. When I run the debugger it can even pass the input from Eclipse console to the debugger, however, the output from the debugger isn't shown.

Oct 31, 2010I would really like to capture the output of scp and my file's progress. Scp updates the transfer rate every 1 second, and I will like to save the transfer rate at every update. So for example, if the file transfer takes 30 seconds, I would like 30 reports of the transfer rate.
The output looks like:

Whenever I try a simple redirect like:

... it does not save the rate at every update, it only shows the final rate.
If I try using typescript by starting "script" ... it's the same deal.
Fedora :: Desktop Video Capture With Very Small Output?
Jul 14, 2010I'm trying to record my desktop and tested some solutions. While I was impressed how small .mng files could be, it is a disadvantage that I can't capture audio with it and many users won't be able to open these (browser / Windows). I have been very impressed by the xvidcap instruction videos: 4:30 in only 9MB, which makes 180MB for 90 minutes. This would be suitable. With Camtasia my professor even records 90min in 100MB. The problem is that xvidcap hasn't been updated since 2006 and seems to be dead. RecordMyDesktop needs 6MB for 1 minute or 540MB for 90 minutes, which is too much. Could anybody give me some hints on how to capture very small video files, which are still clear enough to read text in a format most users can open? It would also be cool to be able to show specific PDF or HTML pages synchronised to the video.

Oct 3, 2010I have 3 old video capture cards which I would like to use for CCTV. Each card supports 1 camera. So I would like to have 3 cameras setup in the end and monitor them with zoneminder. When each card is plugged in on it's own, it works fine. Video comes through clearly with xawtv and zoneminder. However as soon as I plug in a 2nd card (with or without a camera connected) the output in xawtv and zoneminder goes haywire. It looks like the 2nd card takes over the first card, resulting in majority of the picture coming from the 2nd card, and some (if any) from the 1st card. When viewing either of the two cards /dev/video0 or /dev/video1 in xawtv the output is identical. I've tried this on a fresh 10.04 Ubuntu install, and on an older MythTV debian computer, the same results. Here are lspci -vv outputs with 2 combinations of cards (same fuzzy output):

My thoughts are because the capture cards are cheap (similar to winmodems), the problem may be in the software kernel modules not allowing room for other similar capture cards to run at the same time. Can anyone suggest me in the right direction? Do I need to setup some sort of memory allocation for each card manually? Something in the BIOS? An extra option when the card modules are loaded?
Software :: Redirect ALL Terminal Output To File And Screen (for Entire Session)?
Jul 6, 2010Is there one command that will let me record an entire terminal session (with any possible errors) to a text file while also seeing all output on screen too? I know it can be done for individual commands, but I'm looking to do this for an entire session where the individual commands will be normal (i.e., not piped into tee, etc.). It would be even better if the command prompt is captured too. The obvious utility of this makes me think someone surely has come up with a solution long ago (probably in the 60's).(I'm sure it goes without saying, but subsequent output in that session should be appended to the file. The file should contain the full history, with all output and errors, of the session.)

2. if i & a process to the background and do nothing is this a idle session?
3. if user uses su to a higher level, are there now two sessions? is the tmout for user suspended until su user time outs or leaves su session?
4. i have some users who will run long sql queries. is there a workaround to have the session remain active until process has finished?

Nov 10, 2010I have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.
All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

Feb 9, 2010I have a toshiba phone system that has a feature where it spits raw data and i can direct that data to a serial port on the toshiba phone system or to an IP/PORT the data is just ascii data - tells me calls that are made/time/etc
I would like to setup an existing linux box to capture this data and store the data for me
then later i can build reports based on that data (and for me a report could be just a few cat's/greps/etc so basic stuff) - but i can figure this out later.
for now i would just like to GRAB the data on a port and dump it into a file (and recycle files every 24 hours)

Jan 22, 2010I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.
Here's the code to setup the test files:
