I Used to rum simply Mepis 8.0 and I had no trouble accessing the files from winxp. I recently changed to Ubuntu 10.10 with the ext3 file system and can't access the files from winxp. I know about the ext2IFS app and that is what I used with Mepis and it worked fine.

I have an HP laptop with a recently installed copy of Mint 8 KDE Community Edition. I created the initial admin user account ("joseph") when I installed.
I had an existing home directory under a different name from another installation, so I added a user with that name ("joe") and imported a copy of the original home directory. The user "joe" didn't have the same admin privileges as the initial "joseph" account, so I added "joe" to the sudoers file and the same groups as the initial admin user.
Everything works perfectly under this arrangement, for the most part. Now here's the problem:
I have a T-Mobile G1 phone that uses Android. I've rooted and ROM-modded the G1, and have the microSD card in the phone set up with two partitions. The vfat partition stores all the photos, music and other stuff the phone needs. The ROM mod allows me to store apps on the SD card, so that second partition uses ext3 for its file system.
When I'm logged in as the admin "joseph" account and I insert the SD card in the laptop's card slot (or plug the phone into the USB port), the SD card can be mounted, and I have full access to both card partitions. I can see all folders. I do this to backup the contents of the card to an external drive (especially the apps in the ext3 partition, since that's been trashed on me once before on the phone).
However, when I log in as "joe", I cannot view the contents of the ext3 partition at all. I can see the vfat drive fine, and the ext3 partition mounts, but with user/group "joseph/joseph." When I open Dolphin to view the mounted ext3 partition, I get the error "could not enter folder /media/disk-1" at the bottom of the view window in Dolphin.
Here are the relative entries returned when I run "mount" to view the mounted drives:
/dev/mmcblk0p1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=1001,utf8,shortname=mixed,flush)
/dev/mmcblk0p2 on /media/disk-1 type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal)
Note that the uid listed on the vfat mount is 1001, which is the gid for the "joe" account.
I know there must be a configuration setting somewhere that will allow the ext3 partition to automount under the "joe" user account. I suppose that using the admin account to change the permissions would be the easy way to do this, but there must be something that would do it automagically. I've ripped through all the config files I can find, but can't seem to find anything that would help.
All I'm looking for here is enough access to be able to copy the directories on that mount to my external drive.
I have installed ubuntu to my pc. i made 3 partitions. one for system, one for data and one for swap. two of them were ext4. after some time i have reinstalled ubuntu again. but this time i didn't put to format the second partition, but just mount it using ext4. after that i cannot open my files. checked with gparted shows that 2GB used, but with df 188MB. and in properties writes ext3/ext4 filesystem. i used chown, chgrp but didn't help. please help, these data are ver important. i cannot lose them.

Permissions above are of the actual mounted fs.
Goal is to have all files created on the fs
1) to belong to group 'users'
2) to have this groups permissions set to rw (rwx for directories) so that all users who belong to group 'users' have full read/write access to data and everyone else to have only read access.
Now because of setgid bit (s) in group permissions every file created has group 'users' and additionally setgid bit is set for directories. Because every users umask by default (on my system) is set to 0022 all created files will have permissions 644 for ordinary files and 755 for directories.
Net result of above means that users A and B who both belong to group 'users' won't be able to modify files created by the other.
So how can I make files created on the fs to be created always with umask 0002 WITHOUT changing default umask for users that is used elsewhere (like in their home directory) ?
There were some files residing on my ext3 file system, using Ubuntu as my linux distribution. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive using a windows install CD, rewriting it with a new NTFS partition. I'm willing to restore my personal files deleted due to this format.

I have a home network with 2 WINXP machines and one I am trying to load FC10 on. If I get FC10 to work, I will convert the others to FC10. I am trying to access the WINXP machines through my LAN. I have installed samba. I have gone through a lot of places to try to configure samba. Several places say I have to set the security level on the ethernet card using system-config-securitylevel. When I enter this in terminal, I get command not found. I checked with yum and it is installed. I have tried using the menus but cannot find it anywhere. I can see the FC workgroup from one of the WINXP machines but I cannot look into it. It says I don't have the right permissions. I would like to set it so I don't need a userid/password at all. Can I do this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI Tarred and GZipped most of the data on one 1Tb partition and stuck the archives on a second 1Tb partition on a separate disk. I then proceeded to format the first partition with NTFS (from Linux.) The only problem is that I completely forgot that I had a CD drive and formatted sdc1 instead of sdd1! I began doing a full NTFS format and after a minute or two I cancelled it and decided to do a quick format. I then realized my mistake. I managed to find a copy of the superblock and began trying to recover the disk. fsck -t ext3 recognized the partition as NTFS but I luckily didn't have fsck.ntfs installed so it didn't touch it. I managed to get it working with fsck.ext3 (with -b,-B and -y) fsck.ext3 didn't mind that it was an NTFS partition.
Roughly how long will this take? It's running from Knoppix within a virtual machine to a USB hard drive which is 100% full. Days? Being that for a few minutes I attempted a full format am I going to end up with a bunch of corrupted archives? If I do end up with file corruption can anyone recommend a way of recovering the data / sorting it out? Is it likely to be just a few old files that are corrupt (It's my understanding that filesystems like to keep files in the same area on the disk to minimize the amount of head travel.) This might just be wishful thinking but as the filesystem fills up will ext3 put the newer files towards the end of the disk? If so then I'm hoping that a full NTFS format starts at the beginning of the disk.

How I got here: Started off with going into windows and shrinking it's current NTFS partition down by 50GB. Then used an Ubuntu LiveCD to gain access to GParted and with that 50GB free I formatted it with an Ext3 system. It does this no problems. I then can't write anything to this partition? I've tried doing "chmod 777 /dev/sdb2" but it says Operation not Permitted.
EDIT: Need to be able to use it on YDL 6.2 on my PS3, YDL doesn't have NTFS write support and I want to transfer files larger than 4GB rendering Fat32 useless. No I'm not able to re-size or compress this large file.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

I have a drive that originally was used with a Linksys Network Storage Link (NSLU2), then stopped working with it. Now I'm trying to get the files off the drive. When I USB connect the drive to Ubuntu, I can see the files, but I'm unable to open them or copy them. The error message is: "Error Opening File: Permission Denied". I did have permissions set on the NSLU2. So far I'm not able to find a way to get around the permissions issue in Ubuntu.
I have used apps like EASEUS Data Recovery and Recover My Files. It appears that they are finding the files and are able to access them, so I know it can be done. I don't mind spending some $, but these apps are taking a *long* time to run. If I could properly access the files in Ubuntu long enough to copy the files, I think I'd be all set.
I'm using a dual boot system with kubuntu 10.10 and windows vista.When I try to copy files from kubuntu to a windows drive, I see no problem.But when I retsart to windows usually I can't see my files. Once or twice I have seen files I copied in kubuntu. The strange thing is that when I go to kubuntu again, I don't see files I have copied in windows drive.

Reason I'm asking is because on one of my internal drives, I have around 750,000 files. The drive is 500Gb and currently using 150Gb... I noticed recently that when I try to copy a new directory or file, the transfer rate is extremely slow at times. It is sataII and sometimes it gets as low as 500kb/s (yes, kb!)
Would somebody please shed some light?

Now am terribly frustrated because i reinstalled my linux installation(Ubuntu 8.04) after falling prey to an inode error. So i reinstalled stuff under my root partition under which i had some files which i obviously lost.I have tried recovering the files (mostly mp3 files) using photorec and the max file size i managed to recover was 4.0MB. the rest fall in the tune of 300kb.My question is, is there a way to make a full recovery of the above files seeing that they indeed can be recovered?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLong story short, my Windows had a fatal crash the other day and since I couldn't find the installation disk, I burned the Ubuntu 9.10 disk image to a CD at a friend's place and installed it on one partition of the hard drive. The other partition contained tons of Windows programs and documents in an NTFS system. Ubuntu is cool and all, but when I finally found the Windows disk, I wanted to reinstall it for dual-booting, to use some programs that don't run well in Wine.
To keep some documents safe and not waste any CDs, I moved them over to the Ubuntu partition before installing Windows. As experienced ubuntuists know, the slightly clumsy Windows installer erases GRUB in the process, and it's recommended to install Windows first. So, now I ended up with a working Windows partition and an Ubuntu partition with all of the stored data, which I can access via guest status with the burned CD.
Here's the catch though - as a guest and without Linux properly installed I can't move anything I moved to the Linux partition from the Windows partition back anymore. All the folders have a little X on their top corner. I'd be glad to reinstall Ubuntu now, but I must know how to keep all that tranferred data safe. Can I keep it there during the reinstallation? Should I install Wubi on Windows and access the stuff through it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using CentOS 5.5.I suppose this is an oft repeated question. I accidentally deleted, using rm command, 2 wmv files. The files were in a single ext3 1Tb drive, with just 1 partition --- the ext3 one. Each file is 600 - 800mb. The 1Tb drive has only about 20Gb data.Immediately after deleting the files i unmounted the drive (/dev/sdc1). Thereafter i searched the the net and came to know of the recovery tools foremost and photorec. I have installed both of them. I am currently running both of them as root --- foremost is just showing a lot of * signs on the terminal and photorec has managed to find some txt and png files --- but no wmv.For foremost i used: /usr/sbin/foremost -t wmv -i /dev/sdc1For photorec i followed some instructions available on the web.
In the meantime, based on some post on the net i ran debugfs as root, then cd into the directory where the files were deleted. Then on typing ls -d i managed to get the inodes of the 2 deleted files and the names of the deleted files are also correct. The instructions on the net http://www.theavidcoder.com/?p=3 tell me to run fsstat and dls both of which i am unable to find in /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. So i am unable to proceed further.
