I just bought 8GB of RAM for my old desktop which I'm using as an Ubuntu dev box and secondary workstation. Can I just install the RAM and go merrily on my way or do I need to run some commands for Linux to take recognize and take advantage of the extra memory?

When I access my Ubuntu-one account from the web-interface I can see that everything's there, but the music simply doesn't show in Rythmbox or in my Ubuntu One folder. I don't use ubuntu-one for anything else then this music, so it might be some global problem
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have found simple ways to transfer my downloaded music from Windows (file uploading and then downloading, the non-technical easy way), but iTunes doesn't really allow you to download your music - from what I know (non-technical person here).
I have wubi because this is a family computer, and my sister's a gamer (once I convince them to use this, I will find a way to make those games to work here). I also will start buying music from Amazon soon so it'll work here.
How do I first of all download the bought music from iTunes?
it seems Ubuntu can't just BURN CD or DVD. I've used Brasero, GnomeBaker, K3B - They all miserably FAIL.
Plus, they Break My DVD Drives, after trying sooo Many Times, leaves it behind useless.
I bought 3 DVD Drives: Lite-On, Sony and LG. In a span of 3 Months, UBUNTU completely DESTROYED all of them.
I'm not sure why. BUT first, I find Ubuntu can't burn using above Applications. 2nd, DVD stops working.
Error message from K3B, using it, since it's the most stable I've found. cdrdao crashed, file permissions problems, perhaps TAO will fix this, and a lot more of these crap.
I bought a nice new Acer Athlon II x2 yesterday with the intention of using it as my main stable, every-day system. As it came pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium, my plan was to dual-boot between W7 and an as-of-yet undecided 64-bit Linux OS (probably Slackware's 64-bit variant).
Anyway, it wouldn't connect to the Internet. Everything else seemed fine but this. Being too lazy to really look into it myself at the time, I called up Acer tech support and shared my problem. We did a ping test and she said the problem's with the ISP not the hardware, so I went there to find many of their customers seemed to be getting bad or no connection. Thinking that was likely my problem too, I left it at that.
Well today after work I decided to boot my Puppy Linux USB stick onto the machine to see if it's just W7 being Microsuck, and attempting to connect, Puppy couldn't find the correct module to load that would result in a new interface (network) being detected. Annoyed, I tried Puppy Linux on an old tower I'm currently working on for my parents (still working on that one btw for anyone who remembers me from last week) and it connected fine. I'm actually using that system as I type out this post. Running other Linux OSs on my new machine does the same thing (no connection). Going back to W7, I tried letting them do their diagnostic thing and it came up with this:

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
I wonder if the unix commands (cp, mv, grep, args etc) are the same for Mac and Ubuntu. Do they have the same parameter lists and so on or do they try to stay the same but are slightly different?

Is there a way that I could shorten this so that I could just write something like

I would like the console to stay in the main directory, I just don't like having to type out app/controller/user_controler.rb every time I want to open the user controller. I know that I could just open the file with my mouse, but I feel like moving from keyboard to mouse breaks my focus a little bit. When I can just tap away at the keyboard it seems like I have a more smooth workflow.

The following output i am getting in unix and linux.
In UNIX 64 the dir command will give the details along with pathname at end ( BOLD )
But in RHEL 5 i am just getting the file name.
Is thery any way to get the pathname in dir command of FTP in RHEL 5.
I would like to remove rsh, rcp, rlogin from my production server.
How would i go about it?
Should i remove them from their original location using rm?

I just started having some problem after switching my desktop manager from GNome to KDE. One of such situation is the konsole on KDE not running popular commands like ifconfig that I run when I was using GNome.
Although, I have fallen in love with KDE, I am feeling a little bereaved of some feature. where I could use KDE to mastery? (Because I want to believe that I am not doing somethings I should and not that KDE is so limited)
i am still a linux newbie. i'm trying to study the features of the different LINUX distros through installing ubuntu,debian,redhat,centos and fedora as Virtual Machines in VirtualBox.As i've figured out, they look different somehow, they have diffirent managers ,i.e. for downloading or updating their components. BUT MY QUESTION: are these distros internally compatible ?
Do any commands exist in one distro but not in the others? ARE ALL Distros compatible on the CLI-basis ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently lost my window options, had to somehow manipulate my way to Xchat and ask some people how do I get it back (it was metacity --replace, and after I decided to stop the command and run it in background the X was completely useless so I had to do killall -u user). And that was after the internet connection stopped working for some reason (might've been the ISP).
The thing is, after using linux a long time, I still get the feeling that on dire situations, I don't know the good tricks (stuff like metacity --replace). I feel like a really need like a "rescue" cheatsheet for things like: how to save the X no matter what without pressing reset how to reset the system to "normal state" how to connect to the internet through the command line how to monitor what the X is doing (using ubuntu linux 10.04 btw)

I believe the linux of my VPS is 32 bit. Because I downloaded a 64bit mongodb, found it can't start. And when I downloaded a 32bit instead, it works well.
Iam newbi to SUSE, I installed java in my SUSE linux Server edition, So i want to set the path in linux,So i created .bash_profile in in /root path using touch and added the path as "JAVA_PATH". When restart my linux the above command is not working and it show unknown command "JAVA_PATH", I can't able to boot in GUI mode, I can boot only in terminal mode, How to delete the file (.bash_profile in /root) ? And how to add java path in SUSE

Now I want to prevent the shell script from running when Linux boots or I need to find a way to kill the shell script when it is running. I tried using killall, kill $! and Ctrl+C etc. Nothing seems to work. Can you suggest a way out. I am new to Linux.
