General :: KDE Konsole Can't Run Some Commands

Dec 14, 2010

I just started having some problem after switching my desktop manager from GNome to KDE. One of such situation is the konsole on KDE not running popular commands like ifconfig that I run when I was using GNome.
Although, I have fallen in love with KDE, I am feeling a little bereaved of some feature. where I could use KDE to mastery? (Because I want to believe that I am not doing somethings I should and not that KDE is so limited)

General :: OpenSuSe 10.3 - Installing Flash 10 Via Konsole

Oct 15, 2010

Just patching my PC until I get a new one next year. My Yast is a trainwreck. Not very good at working with the terminal. Here is a screen shot of some commands I copy and pasted from another forum. I have flash unzipped on my desktop. /home/sam/desktop the extracted file is called libflashplayer.so

sam@linux-kzhj:~> rpm -qa | grep flash
flash-plugin-10.0.45.2-release
flash-player-9.0.115.0-0.1
sam@linux-kzhj:~> install install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz2
install: missing destination file operand after 'install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz2'
Try `install --help' for more information.

I was told to install as a regular user and not as root. I am running firefox(old) and opera browsers.

One differnce I've hear is the use of (Windows) vs. for line termination (Linux).

General :: Auto Detect Text File Encoding ?

Jun 24, 2011

There are many plain text files which were encoded in variant charsets.

I want to convert them all to UTF-8, but before running iconv, I need to know its original encoding. Most browsers have an Auto Detect option in encodings, however, I can't check those text files one by one because there are too many.

Only having known the original encoding, I then can convert the texts by iconv -f DETECTED_CHARSET -t utf-8.

Is there any utility to detect the encoding of plain text files? It DOES NOT have to be 100% perfect, I don't mind if there're 100 files misconverted in 1,000,000 files.

General :: Bash - Using Find Or Grep To Locate Filenames With Accented Characters From A Different Encoding System (Windows)

Dec 6, 2010

I tried to tag late onto a question similar to mine on stackoverflow (Find Non-UTF8 Filenames on Linux File System) to elicit further replies, with no luck so far, so here goes again... I have the same problem as the OP in the link above and convmv is a great tool to fix one's own filesystem. My question is therefore academic, but I find it unsatisfactory (in fact I can't believe) that 'find' is not able to find non standard ascii characters.

Is there anyone out there that would know what combination of options to use to find filenames that contain non standard characters on what seems to be a unicode FS, in my case the characters seem to be 8bits extended ascii rather than unicode, the files come from a Windows machine (iso-8859-1) and I regularly need to fetch them. I'd love to see how find and/or grep can do the same as convmv.

Fedora Installation :: Erratic Install Results W/initrd - Custom Spins With Custom Drivers - Modules?

Dec 28, 2009

Just spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.

The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]

My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.

The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.

Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?

And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?

How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?

General :: Setting Up An OS For Custom In Car PC?

Oct 24, 2009

Basically the computer will have to do nothing other than run some custom software that interfaces with the vehicle's systems via a USB FDTI board and render to an 8" touch screen via OpenGL. User input will be via the said touchscreen, and audio output will eventually come into the equation. The target vehicle(s) will be extensively modified for the project, and I'm hoping the software will eventually override features such as the immobiliser, so an extremely fast boot time will be essential.

I have one of those Via C7 fully integrated mini ITX motherboards, much of the onboard hardware will be useless besides two USB ports and a SATA port, so could be completely removed from the kernel if necessary to achieve a fast boot. If some BIOS hacking is required I'd happily look at that too. I'm a recently graduated software engineer, and can comfortably use Linux (I'm using openSUSE for developing the software) but don't have a clue where to start with the OS; if I should be downloading and modifying an existing distro or trying to build one from scratch somehow?

General :: Register A Custom Protocol With Xdg?

Jul 10, 2010

I've been struggling this morning trying to associate an application with a custom protocol, namely emacsclient and org-protocol.

I'm calling this protocol from a webbrowser bookmarklet, and I get the following behaviour :

In chromium, the "Launch Application" dialog comes up, and calls xdg-open org-protocol://... which ends up firing a new chromium frame.

In firefox, I've tried setting network.protocol-handler.app.org-protocol to an empty string or my emacsclient path, anyhow I get the following error message : "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (org-protocol) isn't associated with any program" without even showing any external application selection dialog.

I'm not using any desktop environment, so I need to make this work strictly with xdg, however, despite reading the shared mime info spec etc, I still can't fathom a working configuration.
