When i visited the website of skype they asked me the distribution details i.e wether I am using Ubantu 8.10_32bit or Ubantu 8.10+64bit, or debian lenny, or fedora10+.Can somebody please help which one to download for PCLinux.

Jul 3, 2011I have a serial ATA hard drive which was installed into a external enclosure and several Linux installed from 2008-09 when connected by eSATA to a 06 Gateway. I then removed that drive and connected it in a different computer to test that PC due to a hard drive failure. So then at the grub boot menu I did select PCLinux 2009 which then ends at "localhost login:".
This 2nd PC is a 2008 ZT 7263Xi-40 and has fairly different type of hardware components which is likely why the run level 5 or graphical login did not complete. Is localhost login: the run level 3 text mode type login then ? But when I did try to enter my user name and wait for a password request, it failed to login in, ( it said login timeout expired ), and some times when I type my user then hit enter, then it does not ask for my password, just times out.

General :: Set Default Screen Colours In Putty / Ssh?
Dec 6, 2010I use putty to ssh to linux box. By default I get black screen background with white foreground.
To change colours, I go to change settings -> Window/colours and then I set background colours as white and foreground colours as black. This is more easy on my eyes. But I can't seem to be able to set this colour setting as default and each time I login, I have to set colours.
Could someone please suggest a solution?
General :: Incorrect Colours In PNG Graphics Using Firefox And DVI Output
May 2, 2011I have an issue where under certain circumstances images containing yellow or close hues appear bright pink instead.For this to happen ALL 3 of the following must be true:
1. The image must be a PNG with a yellow, orange or a colour close to that.
2. View the image using a gecko based program (Firefox, Thunderbird)
3. Connect the monitor (Samsung Syncmaster P2250) to the graphics card (GeForce 8400GS) using the DVI cable.
JPGs always display correctly, the VGA port on the same card is fine. I can even have Firefox and Epiphany side by side on the screen showing the same url and Epiphany is fine. I normally use Fedora, however with an Ubuntu live cd the images are still pink if all the three criteria are true.
I don't have any other monitors or graphics cards to try unfortunately. If it were hardware, then why is Epiphany ok, if it were software then why does changing the connection to VGA make a difference?
General :: KDE Konsole Can't Run Some Commands
Dec 14, 2010I just started having some problem after switching my desktop manager from GNome to KDE. One of such situation is the konsole on KDE not running popular commands like ifconfig that I run when I was using GNome.
Although, I have fallen in love with KDE, I am feeling a little bereaved of some feature. where I could use KDE to mastery? (Because I want to believe that I am not doing somethings I should and not that KDE is so limited)

Aug 2, 2010For some reason my gnome-terminal is starting in / when it should be ~ I have checked /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and /etc/passwd and everything seems fine as far as i can tell Konsole and xterm are starting up with the working dir to my home dir (as set by /etc/passwd) But im at a loss to see where gnome-terminal is starting in / if i enter cd with no argumants in gnome-terminal it is switching to ~ fine, so i dont think its mistaking my home dir for /

I've seen a number of articles explaining how to customise the terminal but I'm quite happy to accept a default set.Any idea how to reset the terminal so it uses a default theme of some sort?

Feb 7, 2011I have been having problems recently due to the changes to the Display configuration between various Fedora versions. They used to have the "system-config-display" application which only real fault was that it was not terribly good at setting up multiple monitors. Now they have "gnome-display-properties", which is better for dual or triple head, but worse for everything else and has been given me mostly pain since the switch.
At any rate, "system-config-display" had the option of changing the display to only have 16 bit colours, which I need for certain older games or games made with old engines. This option is not available from "gnome-display-properties". Is there a nice desktop environment or distribution agnostic command that one can put into a terminal to change the display between 16-bit and 32 bit colours?

Mar 16, 2010Anyone know what the 'ls' command means when it outputs the file name in red on black, with the permissions, owner, etc. all missing? The 'man' page was of no help. In the example below, from a DVD ROM, the third file was OK and I could read it. The first two could not be read, even as root.
