General :: Writing In Bash While It Is Working?
May 6, 2011
When you are performing time consuming operations in bash like installing new software, is it possible to write text that will appear at the prompt when the operation has finished.
E.g
Imagine running:
apt-get install eclipse-platform
Then it will use quite a while to finish while you see the installation log, meanwhile I want to create new folders (workspaces) which Eclipse later will use.
Is this possible without opening a new terminal (or tab)?

I was assigned to write a bash script in backtrack which will reveal the active IP Addresses on a /30 network. Normally I would not have a problem with this, but I just dont understand because would you not need the entire prefix (ex: 192.168.1) in order to ping sweep for a certain IP range?basically what I'm asking is...How do I nmap a list of IP's for a "/30 network" as that's all that we're given.

I am about to write my first shell script for backing up my server.
These are the steps I have identified so far.
Copy files to be backed up to /srv/backup/ run mysqldump and copy the file to srv/backup/databases run duplicity to backup /srv/backup/* to another folder on my machine
I am writing a bash shell scrip that will be run everyday, and will carry out the three tasks mentioned above.
Note: point 3 (backing up to a local folder) is only a temporary measure - to allow me to understand what I'm doing, since all the tools I am using, are new to me. Once I can backup and restore correctly, I will use duplicity to compress and encrypt the files and upload them offsite.
If my understanding of duplicity is correct (according to the documentation here), the first time I run the script, a FULL backup will be done. Every subsequent backup will then be incremental. I will then force a FULL back on say a weekend.
First things first though - I have a few questions:
I would like to use backup rotation for the 'scheme' described above - I would like some recommendations on what kind/type of rotation to use. Once I have implemented the backup rotation, how can I restore from a particular day back in time (assuming the backup exists of course). ?
I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4

Here the description of the issue I am having.I am writing a bash test script which reads lines from a file, builds ISO messages, sends them to a server, reads the response with response code and reports the result of the test to a file or on the screen. The message that I need to send is 94 characters long. Here's the portion of a code that I initially wrote:
~ Open socket.
exec 3<>/dev/tcp/172.26.0.25/9991

I have been trying to write a simple snip of bash shell code to import from 1 to 100 records into a Bash array.
I have a CSV file that is structured like:
record1,item1,item2,item3,item4
record2,item1,item2,item3,item4
record3,item1,item2,item3,item4
record4,item1,item2,item3,item4
And would like to get this data into corresponding arrays as such:
$record1[item1-4]
$record2[item1-4]
$record3[item1-4]
$record4[item1-4]

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6000. I installed i8kutils and it works. Fan speed reduces CPU temp from 50C to 44C. A start-up script invokes the i8k module: $ udo /usr/sbin/modprobe i8k force=1 which creates /proc/i8k. The man page for i8kctl is straightforward: a few simple commands to read info from the aforementioned file.So. I know nothing about writing even basic bash scripts. I gave it a go here but I know this is way wrong. Would anyone like to help a guy out? This is my starting point (don't laugh):
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# script to toggle fan speed low/high

when ever some error happens in the functions, they are not propagated and err_out function is not called.I tried #!/bin/bash -E too; that way when there is an error the script exits but what I need is error to be propagated properly to the handler.

I would like to keep track of not only what bash commands I used and when, but also where they were issued from, i.e. what was the current working directory when I issued "foobar" on a particular day and time. Can we ask bash history to keep track of working directories too? I have tried to get an idea of this reading the enormous "man bash", but I don't seem to have an answer yet either way.

I'm trying to write a init.d script to daemonise a sagemath notebook server. Here's what I've done so far, I've copied /etc/init.d/single for the structure, and tried to use dtach to provide a handle to access the process. However, my main problem is issuing the signals to kill the process (Ctrl-C) from a bash script and exit dtach (Ctrl-`)

My VPN is behaving funny sometimes, and I have to restart it often.I wanted to write a script which does that for me.It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a shortcut for the commands I have to type into the terminal. More specifically: it will look at the running processes. If it finds a running vpnc process, it will kill it. Then it will start vpnc.I've written bash scripts of similar complexity, but now I don't have a bash, only an ash. Until now, the only difference I noticed is that there are much less commands available, but then, I don't use it very often. So I have some questions.
Is writing ash scripts different than writing bash scripts?
Is there something specific to consider when doing it?
When the script is ready, how can I deploy it? For bash, I just put the executable file under /usr/lib and run it by typing the file name into the command line, will this work with ash?
Are there any special pitfalls to watch out for in the script I want to write? I think that the killing process part may get hairy, if I write something that kills the wrong process, but even then running the script shouldn't break anything permanently, right?

Basically I have a USB flash drive currently formatted under vfat. I can log in as root and the system automatically picks it up and automounts the drive successfully. What needs to happen is that a non-root user needs to be able write to this device while root has mounted this device. Due to other program constraints, I can not mount the device using another user so I have to do it with root.

I am using Grass GIS
I have written a script which outputs a list of numbers to a file
code snippet:
r.stats -1 fs=, input=Bones_AVE > /home/gary/AVE_monte_carlo/rstats_AVE$i.csv
so this makes acsv file with one column. I want to run it again but rather than outputing to a new csv i want to add it to this one as the next column. For this example there will be 100 rows per column.
the 1st one will make the file
[grassGIS code]> /home/gary/AVE_monte_carlo/rstats_AVE.csv
add ',' after each value
the next one
[grassGIS code] open file /home/gary/AVE_monte_carlo/rstats_AVE.csv

I am trying to write input to a shell and get the shell to parse the input that I am writing to it as if a user was typing in commands.
Thus far I have tried echoing some text into the shell's FD for STDIN in /proc/<pid>/fd Whilst this displays the text that I echo, the shell that I am writing to never tries to execute the command that I pass to STDIN. What is the difference between a shell taking STDIN from the user and data written to STDIN by another process e.g. echo ? It appears I am missing something fundamental.

I'm writing a script that among other things partitions and formats disks using SW RAID and LVM. I've read somewhere that for older versions of Linux it was a good idea to use the dd command to zero the first couple of blocks od a device before partitioning it (or formatting it?) Is this practice still recommended? To what end?
