View 3 RepliesI have already installed Ubuntu from an USB drive, however everytime I have to install it on a desktop/laptop or netbook, I have to "burn" the USB again, so I wonder if there is any way to have both (Ubuntu desktop and Netbook Edition) on the same USB drive and choose wich one you want to install at the boot moment.
I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...
I want something stable, tested(not buggy like ubuntu) , easy/automatic configuration(like ubuntu) , and of course should have the option to install the mbr on partition.I know its possible. I just want to know which distribution would make it easy. What I want is to install linux on a separate partition without installing any bootloader like grub onto my MBR. Instead I want to use the already installed xp's bootloader.I think debian's w32 installer works like this. But it is giving me a hal.dll not found error.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I should be doing school work and the work is too easy or I don't know how to do it I start to circle loading certain webpages to waste time. I have read XKCD comic and it seems like a good idea.I want to know how to implement 30 second delay before loading certain webpages preferably on OS level. Maybe delaying DNS queries.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:
1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps
- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")
I've had great success in the server forum when I installed Ubuntu Server 9.04 on my old G5 Mac tower. I have it running successfully, but now need more hard drive bays and would like to switch it to a 1st gen Intel Mac Pro. The problem is, when I start it up, I get the wonderful flashing folder with a question mark, and if I hold down option as its starting up I never get the folder, but the screen just stays gray/white and I can move the mouse around. Is there anyway for me to install it so it just has ubuntu server on it, or do I have to put osx back on first to do it?

2. load linux os cd

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, and happened to have an Silicom Images PCXpress card plugged in, and it kindly added the sil_sata module. This is fine for this chip set.I think that my earlier installation of Ubuntu 9.04 used Libata, which does support NCQ and also has good legacy support for the Intel Intel ICH7 chipset I have inside my Sony Vaio SZ notebook. Also, libata also support Silicon Image chipsets as far as I can tell from URL...I wish to remove the Silicom Images SATA modules and replace this with libata and then test the performance between the two device drivers.

I'm trying to install PyPedal but was overwhelmed by the steps. Here is a link to the program:[URL]..The first problem is, on this page [URL].., the package is described as .tar.gz, however when I try to download, the package is a .egg I searched online since I never dealt with a .egg, some suggest to use the unzip command others have used the command without success.
The second problem is, I have to install Python which I have no experience with. This the Python page[URL].all the Linux files seem to be source tarball. What would be the best way to install a source as I have never done this before? The third problem is, which of the third-party extensions used by PyPedal listed in this link I could skip installing [URL].. . All I interested in is getting the numerical result that this program produces. Assume that I have download the PyPedal and Python files to the /home directory.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get my head around compiling programs, and need some things clarified. Can anyone confirm or deny my understanding so far:
1) Program is written in high level language, such as C. File(s) of the program are the 'source code'.
2) Program is then 'compiled' to turn it into low-level code that is both hardware - i.e. Intel/AMD/ARM processor specific, and also Linux distribution specific. This resulting files are called the binaries.
3) I can go from source code to installed and usable program by doing these steps:
./configure
make
make install
