General :: Uninstalling Without Softwarecenter - Synaptic ?

Jun 14, 2010

I am a person who is interested in Software development, as well as web development. So far I used just Windows as OS, and did much in the .NET framework. Now I wanna switch to Ubuntu and make some programs with Java using Eclipse. Also do I want to design/develop web pages using Ubuntu.

I had a nice start in Ubuntu and I think I have learned the very basics. So let's come to my first Question:

How can I uninstall a program without using the Synaptic Manager nor the Softwarecenter?

How did I came to this Question? -> In Windows, I had a working WAMP set up. Now I want to set up a LAMP in Ubuntu. There is a packet ready to install a LAMP, but I found it too late. Too late means, I already have installed the Apache myself, using Introductions from a book.

The book is an open 'Galileo' book and can be found here:

[url]

The used shell commands are/were:

After this installation, the Apache Server has been installed to

Now is my plan to get rid of this installation and use the LAMP offered in the Synaptic Manager.

How can I uninstall the Apache Server? Or How can I uninstall something by my self in general? I do not want to create a mess. I guess it is not enough to delete just the whole Apache folder, right?

Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Package That Does Not Show In Synaptic

Jun 17, 2011

The problem below is probably related to the fact that I tried to install a 32-bit version of Teamviewer on a 64 bit system. I have now downloaded the right version, but when I try to install it I get: teamviewer6: 6.0.9224 (Multi-Arch: no) is not co-installable with teamviewer6:i386 6.0.9224 (Multi-Arch: no) which is currently installed But the Synaptic Package Manager does not indicate that Teamviewer is installed, nor does it appear under installed apps in the panel. So how do I get rid of the teamviewer6:i386?

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Uninstall Uninstalling Libusb-0.1-4

Feb 7, 2010

Synaptic 0.62.5. When uninstalling libusb-0.1-4, it removes many other unassociated applications (like gnome-desktop, evolution, the kernel in the /boot directory... not nice. See below with a simulated apt-get remove libusb-0.1-4.

Linux hpmaindesktop 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 28 02:39:34 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

The following packages will be REMOVED:

I guess I should have checked this before removing for real as it blew away my desktop, boot kernel, etc. Time now to re-install packages.

I didn't want to reopen thread the thread on uninstalling software from source [URL] so accept this as a continuation of that.I mostly just want to confirm my understanding of what devils casper stated. He said that if you still have the Makefile, you can run make uninstall to uninstall the application:

Code: make uninstall If I've since deleted the Makefile, can't I just recreate the Makefile again by executing the configure script and then running make uninstall?

General :: Uninstalling From Windows 7 PC - Grub Error 22

Mar 15, 2010

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.

General :: Windows - BSOD While Uninstalling Software And While Trying To Reinstall OS

Jun 28, 2010

I got BSOD while attempting to uninstall a program in Win XP, so I tried to reinstall the OS (because the guy who gave me the pc wants a clean-up) but a STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) occurs.I tried then to boot Kubuntu 9.04 live cd, and it booted fine, but when I tried an installation it failed too: just crashing...

I tried to change the RAM and the hard drives to no avail.I'm thinking that it's an hardware failure, but can't track it down: what could it be? Video card? Motherboard?

EDIT: I ran 7 successful memtest - not even an error. I have to look at the harddisk ribbons and the motherboard.

EDIT No.2: I tried another harddrive, switching to sata connectors to no avail: the sata harddisk it isn't even recognized...Can it be the video card, or it will be the Motherboard?

General :: Uninstalling Ubuntu 10.10 - Or Moving Onto Another Hard Drive

Apr 1, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop alongside Windows 7 on the second 320 GB hard drives and now I want to replace it with a 750 GB hard drive, but when I removed it the grub was gone and Windows (on the first hard drive) wouldn't load. This was a mistake, since the grub is installed on the same hard disk as Ubuntu. I want to use GPorted to delete the partitions on the hard drive, but when I boot with it and use the hard drive partition editor it won't let me delete or move one of the partitions. Does this partition contain the grub and if so how do I move it onto my other hard drive?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and during my tries to free space I've removed several packages such as: openoffice, all editors, and some more packages such as players and printers drivers that I don't need and seem o.k to remove. However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages?

General :: Synaptic Package Manager Versus Ubuntu Software Center

This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:
Failed to lock the package manager

Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?

General :: Debian Synaptic Package Manager Error: Xserver-xorg Stripped?

Feb 10, 2011

I have used Debian Linux for two years, most recently the seventh or so iteration of Version 5. I use the Gnome desktop and the Synaptic Package Manager, not the Update Manager, for updates because it's easier to build a log with the former. In my most recent update, Synaptic stripped out all the xserver-xorg files47 in all. I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attachedDebian_error_msg.png? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.

I would like to completely purge both as I have little to no need for them, and the little I do use a word processor for I tend to use cloud based solutions. Is there a way to resolve the dependency that seems to exist that requires one or the other to be on the system at any given time?

Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Opera In 11.04?

I have a problem with Opera 11.10. I can't seem to uninstall it. There is no package related to it in Synaptics Package Manager. It isn't listed in the Software Center.

When I search for "opera" in Unity search it shows up and I can launch it. The launch command is "application://opera-browser.desktop/." but there is no file like that in /usr/share/applications folder.

Also, when I install Opera 11.50, then it installs separately and still launches 11.10 from the Unity search.
