General :: Syslog Message (Using Code Or Logger Command)
Apr 19, 2010
I configured syslog.conf to send logs to kiwi syslog server. After resetting (/etc/init.d/syslog restart),the server got log the message: "syslog 1.4.2 restart". But am getting just resetting message, nor other syslog message (using code or using logger command). I have other computer that send all the syslog messages.

I am using vsyslog() function in my application to write logs to syslog. I could see the logs in /var/log/syslog as follows.

What is this number [4544] stands for?

I am writing my own syslog collector, but im stuck with calculating the severity of the message. The PRI value is calculated:-
Code:
(Facility * 8) + Severity
But from the context of a collector, neither Facility or severity would be known? You need to know either severity or Facility to calculate facility or severity?! The RFC goes in to no more detail about calculating the severity value, other tan this expression.

I thought this question's best category would be in the newbie sectionBasically I have a C code, (for simplicity is only prints a few lines), called printx.c that I would like to convert into a binary file so whenever I have to type "printx" in the command line it would execute the programofcourse gcc will give me a binary file if I do a "gcc printx.c", but even the output file (e.g. print.outwould have to be executed following manner./print.outI only ask, because I notice programs like mailx (which is written in C) is a binary file that could be run in this manner (at least that's what I notice on my ubuntu distro)

I'm trying to run LKL (Linux Keyboard Logger) in a Ubuntu 9.04 VirtualBox VM (VirtualBox 2.2.2 running on a XP host). The package installs fine, but when I try to run it lkl -l -k /usr/share/lkl/keymaps/us_km -o ./kbd.log & it hogs the CPU usage to 50% and never logs a keystroke (in fact the kbd.log file is never created)

I'm having trouble starting Fedora 14 on my computer. The startup procedure freezes while starting system logger. Before this started happening, I had formatted one of my logical disk partitions which is supposed to be mounted under the /var directory. I think may be the cause of this problem. However, I don't know how to fix it, as I can't get into the Linux command line to do a umount. I don't have a CD with which to repair the system, so is there any way to fix this problem without one?

So, I usually write/find a test case generator for any code that I write. This type of code generally leads to some file output. To be thorough, I try and generate many different files to test my code on.
Say the command is like this:
Is there a way to automate this for many different values of the parameters and generate many different files?
I tried:
I wasn't able to use the $i in the filename, and without it the command gave me no errors, but did nothing else either. I know the Unix command line is very powerful, and I have a feeling that this should be possible, but I just don't know how to do it.

I'm new to LinuxQuestions and this is my first post. I'm trying to build rrdtool to install Cacti and encountered the following problem: 'make' step returns an error messages:
Code:
./.libs/librrd.so: undefined reference to `xmlTextReaderGetParserLineNumber'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
What I have doneDownload and build the latest version of pkg-config, glib, pixman, cairo, pango, atk, gtk+ from official sites.
Download rrdtool source
Set PKG_CONFIG_PATH correctly
[Code]...
There is actually another problem with the computer which is "The Nautilus application has quit unexpectedly" everytime I open File Browser application or right-click>Properties a file/directory. This happen only after installing cairo and pango and I don't know how to revert to old version. Since there are a lot of log files so I'm very confused. Can someone give me a direction on how to resolve this?

i am working on a project that uses message queues. i am able to successfully create them and they are working fine. now the problem is to close/remove message queues without software or mq_close / mq_unlink command. earlier when i worked on rh9, there is ipcs utility. we use ipcs to see all the existing message queues and ipcrm to remove them. however ipcs is not working for message queues in RHEL 5.3. Neither ipcs shows the exisiting message queues and neither we are able to use ipcrm. Plz guide to close/remove the queues with ipcs or any other command/utility from shell itself.

Accidentally the usb plug on my WD "My Book" got halfway unplugged and I didn't notice it. when I rebooted it, it wouldn't read the drive. I tried using G Parted to repair it but no success, it just runs forever accessing the drive and never finishes. (I left it running an entire weekend and it didn't finish) the drive is formated ext3.
When I try to mount the drive in Ubuntu 9.10 it gives this error message:
Strangely if I boot into Windows and use the ext driver I can access the drive just fine. is this something I can fix? if needed I can use Windows to do any repairs.
