General :: System Laptop Slow Startup / Reason Of This?

Oct 21, 2010

Just got this Dell M4400 with Redhat EL5 installed.
After I setup the xorg.conf for dual monitor, the startup became extremely slow. Once I type in the user name and password, it just blacks out with the mouse curser still visible. This remains for about 3-4 minutes and then I'm in.

I thought it was my X file, so I overwrote the xorg.conf with my original file and restarted my X. Sadly, it still does that.

What could be causing it? Do I have to reinstall video driver or something?

Ubuntu :: Laptop Freezing Without A Reason?

Jan 10, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron mini 10'1". When I close it and reopen it, it almost always freezes. I can't do anything, ctrl alt delete doesn't work, pushing the button doesn't activate it either (I mean Turn on/off button). I have to hold shut down button so it would turn off, I lose everything I was working with, and simply have to start it again. I'm using Windows XP SP3 home edition.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Booting Into KDE For Some Reason

May 23, 2011

Last week I installed Zoneminder so I can have some webcam security and I let it run on Mocord (motion detection record) for 24 hours just to see how it worked and run some tests. After that 24 hours I changed it to Monitor so that it wouldn't record anything and wouldn't fill up my 320 gig drive but even after I did that the webcam LED stayed on. Not sure if this is normal, I guess it is since it is still using the webcam, just not recording. I don't think. 2 nights ago I was using it to watch videos online and it was a little slow but was still good enough.

This morning I unplugged it and brought it downstairs to use it but when I opened the lid the hard drive LED was constant and the mouse was all jumpy. Anything I clicked on took a minute to register and the disk utility that I tried loading 2 days earlier looked like it was still loading. I couldn't click anything because the hard drive was running like crazy. Or processor or whatever that light is. So I held the power button, rebooted and nothing on the menu bar was loaded and the hard drive was going crazy again, still couldn't click on anything.

So I rebooted again and this time it gave me a popup before the desktop loaded:
There is a problem with the configuration server.
(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/conf-sanity-check-2 extend with status 256)

So I click Close and it boots to a black background with huge icons and there are obviously no drivers loaded. There's now a new error message:
GConf error: Faield to contact configuration server: the most common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: GetIOR faield: GDBus.Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildSignaled: Process /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 received signal 6)

All further errors shown only on terminal. And then it does nothing, all the menus say KDE. Webcam LED is still on though since Zoneminder runs as a service on Apache. It's a dual core Dell Studio 15 laptop with all the newest updates and I have 3 separate partitions on my install: /, /home, SWAP. My / partition has 2 gigs free according to KDE and my /home partition has 124 gigs free.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Laptop Heats Up For No Reason

Jun 5, 2011

Since I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I noticed that my laptop heats up for no reason and the battery life has become shorter, then when I searched for this problem I've found that it's a bug and most probably it's in the Linux kernel itself, so is there any patches, updates or any news about this problem, do they out there even know it exists or what?

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?

May 3, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?

Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

General :: Java Apps Slow Startup When Connected To Network?

Aug 11, 2011

I'm using Arch Linux with kernel 3.0 and brcmsmac to manage my wireless card. My desktop environment is KDE 4.7 and I use networkmanager to handle network. Recently I've been affected by a weird problem wherein whenever I'm connected to a network Java apps such as jEdit take ~30 seconds longer to start but behave normal once started. What could it be due to and how can I fix it?EDIT:The problem occurs both with Oracle's JRE and OpenJDK, both versions 1.7. I'm behind a HTTP proxy, if that makes a difference.EDIT:I've discovered the cause of this problem. My /etc/hosts file had the wrong host name in it. After correcting this to my hostnameeverything is fine.

General :: Slow Running Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop?

Oct 31, 2010

I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs:

Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
512MB Nvidia 8600GT video
Realtek HD audio

What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI.

Server :: WordPress Blogging Server Running Slow For What Reason?

May 16, 2009

I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).

During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response. Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.

Debian :: Updating Grub And For Some Reason The System Hanged?

May 30, 2011

I was updating grub and for some reason the system hanged. Going to a tty did not solve any problems. At the end I had to do a hard reboot and came up with the following on the grub boot

reloc offset is out of segment Entering rescue mode grub rescue >

Googling for the above I landed on this page.

[URL]

While I'm going to try the later part, is there anything else I need to know about ?

Didn't have to do much, took the the Squeeze 6.10.a DVD, asked it to run into rescue mode and then did grub-install giving the MBR (hd0) as the place to be. Things worked nice after that.

Upon booting had to run
dpkg --configure -a

and it updated grub to 1.99-5 among other updates. Did not know that Squeeze had a rescue method as well (just like Ubuntu live CDs have). Now just have to wait for Debian to get Live CD/DVD as default

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

General :: Whole System Very Slow And Keeps Crashing?

Jun 27, 2010

Not really sure I'd call myself a newbie with Linux, I've been using a few different distros for a little over a year now.. maybe longer.Though, I'm not very good with terminal just yet. I don't know all the code stuff.I put this system together about 6 months ago. It's comprised of about 50/50 new and used parts. Everything should be listed in my signature file. All was running just fine when the build was complete. But now it seems every day its getting slower, crashes almost every 30 mins.. USB 2.0 runs very slow and lags to the point it just stops altogether.

I really wish that I could test on Windows, or any other OS for that matter. But I'm down to my last hard drive, a very slow (4k RPM?) tiny (40GB) Maxtor IDE. I don't even want to waste any more of my time trying to install/reinstall any OS to the thing. Don't think my mobo allows for booting from USB flash drives, and still yet with it running USB so slow what would be the point?I've tried Ubuntu 10.04 and was very satisfied... except that it won't allow any usage of my Azio PCI wireless N card. The light goes on and it flashes as if its trying to connect, but it won't connect to any secure connection.

So here I am back to 9.10 and wondering if my hdd and/or RAM could be causing some sort of problem? Is RAM being a bottle neck? It's DDR333 but CPU clocks it320 because of something to do with the 800FSB and whatever stupid Intel chipset is on mobo. Can someone please give me a suggestion as to where to start? I have no other computer and really need it for school and work. I have no money for new system or even any more parts. It's getting me so peed that I'm about ready to take a 4 pound sledge to it

General :: High IOWait - System Starts To Slow Down

Jan 5, 2010

I've been having a problem in Ubuntu 9.10 recently where starting about 2 minutes after startup my computer slows down and becomes unresponsive. I believe the problem is associated with a high IOWait because I have the system monitor applet on my Gnome Panel and it displays 100% IOWait every time my system starts to slow down. I have tried booting into other kernel version and the problem persists. I don't really know what IOWait is or how to diagnose this problem further. I've looked around online and it seems like you have to find a specific process that is causing the IOWait, but I don't understand how to go about doing that.

I noticed that if my router is off, the polling process take quite some time to move on.. I tried to look the rc.M, rc.inet1 and rc.wireless scripts, but I couldn't pin point what to change... I tought of adding an '&' at the end of the command that issues the line I quoted and on the DHCP. The DHCP line I didn't search much, I'll try it later...
