I am a new user of Linux, and I actually had a task that is the ability to resize (specifically Shrink) storage of Virtual Machine, I was thinking that the best to start on is to know how to resize partition in linux using command line since our VM runs in Linux environment.
View 7 RepliesI have serwer Debian with my website. My provider splited the disc into 5GB partition for / and 495GB partition for /var. Everything was going ok for over two years but now I don't have enough memory on /. I'd like to increase the partition but the problem is that /var is just next to it so I can't easily change the end of the first one. I need some safe solution. It might be even just shrinking partition for /var, adding new one after if it helps anyhow (I have about 450GB free memory).

In an attempt to shrink my Data partition on my 500GB drive I had succeded in shrinking it but I think I have broken the partition table as now it refuses to mount. When trying to mount I get this error mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2 I have done some searching around but most fixes haven't worked because they are based on ext2/3 File systems and this partition is ext4. Using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.

But now Im thinking about resizing my hard drive so that I can install windows so my brother can play games on it ( probly giving 50 Gigs to windows )I heard that parted ( located on slackware cd 1 ) is what I should use. So I was wondering if I need to backup any important files before doing the resizing? I would also appreciate it if someone could link an good tutorial for doing partition resizing .

I want to resize my swap partition /dev/sda2 to use 1GB out of the above space. How can I achieve that?
First of all, the boot device is an 16GB SD card. I install Citrix XenServer on it but I make the partition too small (XenServer makes a lot of logs file). I resize the partition but now it give "Illegal OpCode" and red screen everytime it boot.I already create the image of the whole SD card using dd and already try these process three times = restore the image, test that it can boot properly, then resize the partition using gparted, then it can't boot.
I already post this question in XenServer forum (with screenshot) but nobody answer there.The hardware itself is HP Proliant ML350 G6 with internal SD slot.
I recently decided to resize a partition on my HDD (partition on which Ubuntu was previously installed).This was in order to remove Ubuntu from one of my HDD. I got rid of the Grub loader by booting on my windows system recovery disk and using Bootrec.exe/FixMbr and my computer now boots directly into windows. I then deleted the Ubuntu partition.
To get to the heart of the problem, I am trying to move the free space that is in the extended partition out and merge it with C. I tried doing this with my Gparted liveCD but it didn't work. I didnt have anything to save the error message onto, but I will try the process again when I get home and save the error onto my external drive so that I can post it here.
I have 10 GB drive with win98SE taking 2 GB and 9.04 taking 2.3 GB, then the rest is unallocated space. I am trying to use upgrade manager in 9.04 to upgrade to 9.10 (I have 9.10 CD but it fails to install - tried to download it several times. I know upgrade manager solution works in principle, but upgrading to 9.10 says it needs another 1GB of space.
I have used 9.04 live disc to start GParted but there seems no way to resize the 9.04 partition to use the unallocated space - can only resize it down. Making the unallocated space a partition does not seem to help. How can I go from here to make enough space to upgrade to 9.10 and keep Win 98
I removed an ntfs partition I had in my HD and then resized my home partition with gparted to occupy all the available space. The resulting partition is supposed to be 129GB, and gparted/partition magic see that size. But the system does not, and all tools report the old partition size and the same free space I had before resizing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
I shrinked the /home partition using resize2fs command by 1GB and what had happened to remaining my free space .

I run gparted (and yes i have ntfsprogs) but when i select the ntfs partition and select move/resize it brings up free space preceding... new size... and free space following.so when i input the new size the resize/move button greys out and when i change the freespace following it just puts back my original new size and back and forth.from what i have read i need to run the gparted livecd and go from there. is this true? i know how to do it with diskpart in windows, how to in ubuntu and eventually get rid of windows.my system is 64-bit. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been attempting to set up a bunch of partitions on a bunch of hard disks, in preparation for installing Maverick. I will be setting up a number of RAID partitions, so I will install from the alternate disk (ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64.iso). Now ever since they added support for GRUB2 and a new partition type and align-to-megabyte and a whole bunch of other goodness, partitioning has been buggy. This has been true for Maverick and Lucid. Even the 10.04.1 version (an Ubuntu LTS!) still has problems. Every time I try something else, some other bizarre bug rears its ugly head. (Yes, I have been reporting them on Launchpad when I find a new one.)
In order to move forward on this project, I have been using a variety of partitioning tools. I temporarily installed Maverick on a small partition, and have used Disk Utility (palimpsest) and GParted while booted into that. Occasionally when things get really strange I boot up the latest version of System Rescue Disk, which contains the latest version of gparted. I use these various tools to try out various partitioning schemes, just laying out empty partitions that will be formatted or assembled into RAID arrays later. When I get all the desired partitions set up, I will boot into the alternate installer and do the final installation. (I don't want to do the entire thing within the alternate installer because it makes my head hurt. I do have a lot of partitions.) This has been going on for weeks now. Every time I try something different, something weird happens, and I have to try various workarounds, or switch to different tools. Basically, my partitions eventually become unstable.
Here's the latest mind boggler: Disk Utility displays nice graphical maps of your partitions. This image includes before and after screenshots showing what happens to my partitions occasionally. We start with three primary partitions and one extended partition. The extended partition goes all the way to the end of the disk. We put a small logical partition into the extended partition, at the beginning of it. We can then click on the "free" portion of the extended partition and create additional logical partitions if we like.
Afterwards, the extended partition has magically shrunk itself down until it is the same size as the small logical partition it contains. The free space has migrated out of the extended partition, and is now useless, as you can't have more than four primary+extended partitions. Disk Utility won't let you create another partition. What happened between the Before and After pictures? I don't know. I do know that I did not ever tell any tool to change the size of any partition. Moving or resizing partitions can trigger various known bugs, so I never even try to do that, I just delete partitions and start over.
Using a small hard drive (180 GB) dual booting windows XP for gaming and Ubuntu 9.10 for my other stuff during install I didnt know how much of each partition i would use, so i did 50-50 1 for ext3 and one for NTFSHowever after awhile it seems I have run out of space on my NTFS and have tons of unused space on my ext3.What I am wanting to do is shrink some of that ext3 down and give it it NTFS, I did a little searching and found a couple of old posts but I was a little sketchey on em. Simply looking for some personal Methods or Tools you have used and a starting point of how to use them.

I have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop i386 using "Install inside Windows" option. In the installation i dedicated 3GB for the root parition. Now i have a Windows 7 and a Ubuntu.
Currently, I need more space for the Ubuntu root parition (just 50MB freespace remained!). I realized the it is a simple 3GB file in the Windows and root parition is virtually in that file.
So it should be possible to increase the size of the root parition. But i cannot find any way for this.
I do not want to reinstall the my Ubuntu or add another partition. Is there any painless way to just increase the size of root parition?
Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.
I know there are probably alot of threads about lvm however they aren't addressing my problem. I want to extend the PEs available in a VG. This VG already has LVs and those are active and mounted. From what I read from the manpages of pvresize this should be perfectly possible.

pvresize resizes PhysicalVolume which may already be in a volume group and have active logical volumes allocated on it.
I did the following steps and wonder if anyone has the same issue. THe machine where I am talking about is an ESX VM.
1. Resized the vmdk in ESX (+1G)
2. Let the kernel reread the device geometry: echo 1 > /sys/block/sdc/device/rescan
3. fdisk shows me the new size... so far so good
4. I resize the partition using fdisk (remove, recreate) and gave it the 8e type (lvm)
5. wrote config to disk
6. executed partprobe
7. pvresize /dev/sdc
Here it goes wrong! Pvresize says in the verbose output it sees the same size however at the end it says the pv has been resized. I have seen when I put volumes "offline" using vgchange -a n vg on a test machine, and then try pvresize it seems to work ok. This is against what is in the manual as it says pvresize should work on online mounted volumes.

I want to give Mandriva 2010 a shot, and I want to resize my 500gb /home partition (logical) to make some room. It's an ext4 partition. Do you reckon I'll be safe resizing it from the Mandriva installer? or should I use an Ubuntu LiveCD first?

I have resized max size of vdi file with VBoxManage modifyhd but now I need to resize partition on virtual machine's system. I've downloaded GParted and I can run machine from this ISO as CD. Partition is encrypted on machine.Unfortunately GParted doesn't start with X so I have to use it in terminal. I can see partitions:

So I check my internet connection. VirtualBox has 'attached to NAT' and before I run out of space on virtual machine, Debian could access internet. So it's only something about this GParted. I have modified /etc/resolv.conf with vi (even vim is not available). And it has two valid nameservers. I haven't restarted anything, as I'm not sure if I need to, after modifying resolv.conf file.But even in that case I cannot ping anything from GParted:

when i have installed fedora 14 from the live CD....i noticed fedora give 4.9 GB SWAP partion:mad and give the root another 4.9 GB.... every time i monitor the swap is free cuz my RAM is 3 GB.... I want resize my root and take the space from the SWAP and give the SWAP only 1 GB... im worried that i miss up with system.... any clean graphical interface recommend me...? or any clean way to resize..?
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I was messing around with my partitions, and I decided to shrink my main partition that had Windows on it, so that I would could have one big storage partition and then a Windows 7 one and a Ubuntu one. Well, it didn't really work so I decided just to wait for Lucid to come out and start with a fresh install. So I went into EASEUS Partition Manager and resized my main Windows 7 partition back to its normal size. It had to reboot and did its stuff, and then when I restarted my computer, grub was showing the grub rescue> thing. So I went into the Windows 7 recovery disk, and tried all the BootRec.exe options. None of those worked. So I decided to go to the extreme and just delete Ubuntu completely.
I deleted the entire partition with GParted and then resized the main partition all the way. Then I booted into a Ubuntu live usb and re-installed Ubuntu. I thought it would just reinstall Grub and I would be able to get to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. It did install Grub, but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. It's really weird, because I can boot into windows, it just says starting windows and does the loading thing. And then EASEUS Partition Manager comes and says that all resize operations were complete successfully(because I hadn't booted into windows since I resized stuff with it) and then the screen just stays black for a long time. I don't know what to do. If I wait long enough, my computer just reboots...
I have a LVM logical volume, that contains a LUKS encrypted volume, on which is an ext4 filesystem. I shrank the partition to the minimum size. Next step is to luksClose the device, and then to resize the LVM logical volume. I suspect that LUKS has overhead. So if the ext4 filesystem was resized from, say 1TB to 500G, I have the idea that resizing the LVM LV to 500G does not take LUKS overhead into account and this might corrupt data on the end of the FS. So, what's the smart move to take? How do I calculate the safe minimum LV size? Or should I just give the 500G disk a few gigabytes extra to be sure?

I would like to know that whenever I am going to install any new software or packages then it will be installed in which folder or partition? I have only 170 mb space free in user and have not installed any thing yet. Do I need to resize it. If yes, then how can I do so?
