I installed Linux Mint 9 a couple of days ago (from a live usb) and my 'Account type' was set as 'Custom'.
I had to change the 'Account type' to 'Administrator' so I could edit the 'Network Manager' configuration (the 'Apply' button in Network Manager was disabled until I changed to Administrator).
Is it ok to leave it as 'Administrator' or should I change it to 'Desktop user' until I need to change system settings again?
why the user created at installation time is a Custom User instead of an Administrator.

In these installations, I am able to access her home directory, while, in the past, I was not allowed to access her home directory on previous Debian releases.
Need help maintaining permissions across multiple directories. Have Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. O/S installed, updated and running with no problems.Why is it that my administrator user id doesn't seem to have root permissions to create directories? As my user I run:
vncserver
then I can connect to that box using: 192.168.1.2:1 but it is a different desktop?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.
Is there a way to crack the windows Administrator password in Linux (using the SAM file) WITHOUT resetting it?
Ok so Ive already got Ubuntu 10.10 on a usb bootstick. Chntpw is installed as well. What I'm wondering is are there any programs to crack as in decrypt the SAM file and show the password but not erase it? Most Linux programs Ive come across don't do this. They just reset the password.

I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. I am using VMware to install RHEL 5.0 through an .ISO image in my lappy, bcoz my DVD-ROM is not working.While installation it didn't ask anything except user-name and password and it got installed correctly.But the problem is that, when I open a terminal it always opens in USER mode ($- prompt) and working directory shows(/home/user).how can I use the administrator(/root) ---> # -prompt.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running a remote login server where I have multiple users. I am using No Machine NX for the remote login software. I also used Ubuntu Tweak and did some editing in gconf-editor in order to lockdown the machine. In the end the user has some files on their desktop they can view and one panel with a logoff button. This system has been in place for about 2 years now and running pretty smoothly.
I am not sure if this is an NX problem or Gnome problem. I have just one user, all of a sudden, that has nothing on the desktop and no panel when they login. The system was set for each user to have their /home folder as their desktop folder. I am not sure where to start trouble shooting this. I have looked a quite at few of the gconf.xml fiels for the user, but do not see anything out of the ordinary (comparing to other user's gconf.xml files)
When I create a new desktop user(i.e. without administrative privileges), I am given the option of letting him have the ability to connect to wired/wireless networks or not. Should I let a normal user have this privilege? Are there any security issues if I let him connect to wireless networks?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a total hangup while downloading a largeish jpg, my desktop doesnt show any icons and both monitors show the same. Other users have same problem. When I try to reactivate the two-monitor setting, I get the message: "The monitor configuration could not be saved. Error executing command as anther user. no authentication agent found" (or words to that effect - my messages are in german). the thing that puzzles me is that the correct desktop background is shown - so not all settings are lost. is this a common fault? or whewe are these configurations stored?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI work for a local community college, and we currently have web kiosks set up around the college. They have fairly old hardware and are currently running windows XP. However, with all the group policies and scripts required to lock them down, it can take 10+ minutes for the students to log in(we want authentication for someone to be able to use them).
Now, I have managed to get a few test computers to run fedora with openLDAP authentication and LTSP giving them a desktop with firefox. Now, the problem is that we don't want the user to be able to do anything but run firefox and, on some of them, print. I have been using gnome, gconf, and sabayon(not the distribution, the user profile tool) to attempt to lock down the desktop. However, anyone can just right click the gnome menu and add back in everything i disabled. While they wouldn't be able to do much harm, the point is that if they want to do work, we want them to go to our computer labs, instead of the kiosks. The kiosks are just for looking things up or getting on their e-mail.
I was wondering if there was an option like what windows has, where, while in explorer, you can right-click a file, choose "Run as Administrator...", enter your password in the dialog box, and open the program with admin privileges. Is there a script out there for linux to do this? If so, where is it, and how can i install it?
