Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address 127.0.0.1 Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Remote Desktop Only Allows Local?

Jul 13, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 (fresh install) and it is my work computer/Server and i'd like access to this PC from my home. But with Remote Desktop it only says i can do local.

I've look around and opened up port 5900 in my router. Set this IP to to static and forwarded the port to this computer.

I've read that unchecking the "configure network automatically to accept connections" as it seems to cause an issue in ports i've read. Still nothing.

Here is a screen cap of my settings

How can i allow access from my Windows Based PC to this computer over the internet?

General :: Transfer Files From Remote To Local Machine Using SSH?

Jun 28, 2011

I have a Ubuntu server hosted on Amazon EC2. I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:

rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2

How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.

General :: Ssh Login Without Password From Local To Remote And Further To Another Remove?

Apr 15, 2011

I know I can ssh login without password from a local to a remote. My question is how I can ssh without password from the remote to another remote. Say, I have three machines: A, B, C where A is the local machine. I use the same private/public key pair for all the login. What I can do are:

1. ssh from A to B.

2. ssh from A to C.

3. If I am sitting in the computer B (or B is local), then I can ssh from B to C.

What I am not able to do is:

After I ssh from A to B, I cannot ssh from the B to C. When I try to ssh from B to C, it asks me a passphrase.

General :: Copying Files From Remote Server To Local?

Jan 26, 2011

I have a problem while copying files from a remote computer to my local one using the scp command. I am sure that I am using it correctly, please check it below:
---
blah@blah.com:~/g4work> scp blah2@blah2.com:IndirectMethod_Spher...s/H_1.mac.root .
---
What I get in return (instead of the statement saying 100% of file copied) is:
---
On this machine the G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
---

The interesting point is that the above returned statement is one of the Environment variables set on both the machines that are necessary to work with a toolkit called Geant4. Here is what I get when I type 'printenv | grep G4' just to show you (note the statement in bold):
---
G4LEVELGAMMADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/PhotonEvaporation2.0
G4INSTALL=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02
G4LEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4EMLOW6.9

G4RADIOACTIVEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/RadioactiveDecay3.2
G4ABLADATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/G4ABLA3.0
G4LIB=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/lib
G4VIS_BUILD_RAYTRACERX_DRIVER=1
G4LIB_BUILD_SHARED=1
G4VIS_USE_OPENGLX=1
G4UI_USE_TCSH=1
G4VIS_USE_RAYTRACERX=1
G4REALSURFACEDATA=/home/blah/geant4/geant4.9.3.p02/data/RealSurface1.0
G4SYSTEM=Linux-g++
G4WORKDIR=/home/blah/g4work
---
The other thing that I would like to mention is that these Geant4 Env. Variables are loaded each time a new (bash) shell is started as a result of the bash login script.

General :: Why Dolphin Makes Local Copy When Play A Remote .avi File

Oct 15, 2010

i am using dolphin 1.5 in kde 4.5.2. whenever i try to access movie file from remote samba server. dolphin copies the movie file to somewhere in local hard disk. so, i have to wait until a big file transferring complete. i know that it happens when i open .avi using mplayer. if i open the same remote file with kmplayer, it will player immediately instead of making local copy first. however, kmplayer is very slow and sounds and video stream breaking up, (i am sorry i do not know right english expression for this) i suppose this is not related to mplayer configuration. this seems to be dolphin problem. can i make dolphin to stop copying samba share to local disk and play instantly? there is a video in videos. it is comparing how dolphin and nautilus act differently when i play remote samba share movies.

General :: How To Mount Remote Samba Share From Local Host With Multiple Groups

May 6, 2010

I am using mount.cifs to mount a remote samba share (both client and server are Ubuntu server 8.04) like this:mount.cifs //sambaserver/samba /mountpath -o credentials=/path/.credentials,uid=someuser,gid=1000.I mounted a user from local system with username and password with mount.cifs but the problem is that the user is part of multiple groups on the remote system and with mount.cifs I can only specify one gid. Is there a way to specify all the gids that the remote user has?

Mount the remote samba with multiple groups on the local system?Browse the mount from 1) with the terminal since I want to pass some files from samba as arguments to local programs.which runs through gvfs; but the newer gnome does not write to disk the ~/.gvfs anymore so I can't browse it in terminal. And the last solution would be NFS but that means that I have to synchronize the uids and gids on the local system with the ones from the server.

I am trying to login to a redhat server via VNC. This used to work until I reloaded the box. Although I had previously logged in directly to the box, then I could vnc to it remotely. The service is running, netstat states the ports are open and listening.I can ssh to the box, and ran the usual commands to start the services.So my question is. Do I need to have a local user logged in before I can VNC, if so how can I do that via the command line.If this is not required for a local user to be logged in, what am I missing. Other than VNC, which other services do I need to start.

General :: Obtain Local User Accounts Remotely?

Aug 17, 2010

I am trying to figure out a way to pull the user information from local users on a Linux server. I have approximately 40 servers running SUSE and Ubuntu that are using Microsoft Active Directory in order to authenticate. Our internal auditing group has made us disable root ssh ability, I was doing this with clusterssh, but I can login as me then su on the server to conduct root, admin, work. This is an ongoing request to get the local users and it is a painfully slow process since I have to login to each server to get the /etc/passwd file. Is there another way to get the local user information? They are now asking about seeing the last logon date or if the account is disabled, any thoughts there as well?Most of our auditors think Windows and I am trying to make my life easier but not sure what options I have. I need to get local accounts and if they are active or disabled plus last logon date. I'm sure there will be more but if I can get the basics adding more shouldn't be too difficult but I guess I'll cross that bride when I get there.
