General :: Run Application With Other User?

Feb 8, 2011

OS: Fedora 14GUI: GNOMEI need to run an application with another user then the "default" (normally used).Purpose: create a ".desktop" file on my desktop to run e.g.: Google Chrome with another user (NOT ROOT! - so beesu doesn't count.)There aren't any gksu, or kdesu packages in Fedora 14. Why?So i want to create a user with "adduser SOMEONE", and i want to run e.g.: Google Chrome with "SOMEONE" - then it will have minimum permissions, "more security".

General :: Application Running As User Foo Log Onto Database As (database) User Foobar?

Jan 5, 2011

I am writing a simple application that will run as user foo (i.e. Ubuntu user foo). However, the application will connect to my database as (database user foobar). IIRC, database users have nothing to do with Linux system users - but I just need to clarify that.So can an app launched to run as user 'foo', connect to a database as user 'foobar'?

General :: User Application Run Entirely In Kernel-mode?

Dec 17, 2009

I have a question regarding application/process execution and it's the following:

Is it possible a user application (which will regularly be executed at user-space) to be re-written as a kernel-module to allow the entire execution to be under kernel-mode (i.e. no system calls should be needed)? I am not saying that this is the right thing to do; I am just asking if it's doable.

General :: Run Application Or Boot As Specific User

Apr 18, 2010

I have a need to run a specific app as a specific user when the machine boots into init 3. I can not run this as root so I need to specify a user. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?I usually have to log in and start this application by typing check -D which starts this app and daemonizes it. I want to be able to run that at boot with my normal user not root.I hope I explained this correctly.I have added it to rc.local but it runs as root.

General :: Application Called Impact - Paths In Java Application ?

Apr 14, 2010

So, I have this application called Impact, it is an explicit time integration Finite Elements code written in Java...

[url]

I untar the pack, and launch the application calling a script, from within the untarred folder,

Code:

This launches a gui which allows me to setup a case, which needs some setup file, tipically some *.in and a mesh file, tipically some *.msh.

Other mode of executuion consists of calling the setup file as argument to Impact.sh script ( CLI execution mode, for g33k5 )

My problem is : I have packed the whole stuff into a Slackware .tgz, that places it in /usr/local/Impact, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin,

Code:

Code:

I decided to hack the ImpactGUI_OGL_linux_amd64.sh script from

Code:

Code:

no avail,

Code:

even after adding /usr/local/Impact/bin to PATH... won't go...

I can run this thing from within its directory... but I do not like messing within the directories of my applications, this is why I sent this to /usr/local, and placed a calling script in /usr/local/bin...

OpenSUSE :: How To Save (backup) User Application Settings And Data?

Feb 10, 2010

I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing. For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings. So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?

Programming :: Physical Memory Leaked By User Application Process Is Not Reclaimed Back After Exit?

May 2, 2010

Whenever I'm running my application process, I've 1M physical memory usage is increasing for every 2 hours. This I observed using 'free -m' command. But 'top' command did not showing any increase 'RSS' size.It is same as it was started initially.Even though I stopped my process, the increased memory was not released back. If I start my application process then again memory usage start increasing by 1M for every 2 hours. increase of memory usage observer with 'free' and that too when my application is running, but top command is not showing any change in the RSS sizeIf my application is leaking any memory which is allocated by new/malloc, that should be released back whenever my application exit and the size increase will be show through top command for that process, right? This is not happeningThis proves that there is no potential leaks in my process. But why physical memory is increasing when only my process is running?

Ubuntu :: Apt/dpkg: Segregate User Application Packages From System Packages?

Dec 2, 2010

Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

General :: Give User Access To Directory In Another User's Home

Mar 8, 2010

I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.

I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.

General :: Change All Files Belonging To One User To Another User?

Jul 20, 2011

I'm looking for a Linux command that can change ownership of all files belonging to a given user, preferably in a targeted directory, to another specified user. My dream command would look something like this. chuser -R --olduser tom --newuser jerry

This is my scenario... I have a backup file (.tgz) with user and group information preserved in it. It was taken from a web server running Apache and MySQL. The files in the backup are from across the system and contain files from several different users and several system type accounts and it is key that when restored on the new server the settings are not lost. The problem is that the users on the machine the files are being restored to don't match the ones in the backup file. For instance both machines had a MySQL user but they have different user ids and there are several user ids that existed on both machines that belong to different users. This means there is no way to sync the users on the new machine to the ones on the old machine. I can find all the users files with the find command like this...

find /decompressed-backup-dir -uid 1050
or
find /decompressed-backup-dir -user tom

If, as I suspect, there is no way to do what I want with a single command then perhaps there is a way to pipe the results of the find command to another command to handle the ownership change?

I could do this with a PHP script but there are 4GB and tens of thousands of files in the backup so I don't want to use PHP or Perl but I would be happy with a shell script that could handle it.
