I have a question regd. reservations for the system GID's/UID's in Redhat. I understand that numbers <500 are reserved for systems and >500 for users. In the former, is there a range that is reserved for private use (like the 10. range in the case of IP addresses)? I need to create a system group and user and specify a GID and UID and I would like to make sure that the numbers do not conflict with some other package.
View 1 RepliesHave DHCP3 running on an ubuntu server. Using config of the below but the 10.1.1.2 address is being given to a windows pc (which does not have that MAC address). Tried getting windows to release ip address, then clearing the lease file and restarting dhcp3 service, then renewing dhcp request from windows, but address 10.1.1.2 is still given.

While configuring dhcpd.conf on centos 4 I couldn't find option to reserve that ip addresses. I have subnet of 10.0.0.0 network of which i want reserve 1 - 50 addresses for my servers. I'll assign static ips to my servers & printers.

Is there a system admin tool for RHEL on montioring and logging system memory used and released that can dump to a log file?I'm having an issue with memory not being released when an application is closed. I need to have a tool monitor and log so I can troubleshoot to verify that it's an application not the OS.

So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.

Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap

Booted up system and it stated please insert system disk press any key.So it sounds like my startup got corrupted? I running centos 4.5 on it (old yes) Is there a repair I can perform by a disk? Would it matter if I chose i386 or x86? I cant remeber which version was installed on it.

I have (had) Debian Testing running on a 250GB IDE hard drive, partitioned normally.
I also have 4x 1TB drives in a raid 5 using mdadm, and 2x 500GB drives in a raid 1 also with mdadm.
I put the two arrays in lvm using:
I then used "lvcreate" to make storage/backup 300GB, and the rest went to storage/media (approx. 2TB usable). I put an xfs filesystem on both and mounted them.
All was working fine until the system drive shorted out and died on me this morning. As far as I can tell, all my other drives and everything else is fine. I do a daily rsnapshot of the filesystem, which of course is residing on storage/backup (stupid, I know). So I have full backups of everything, but I'll have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall Debian before I can restore everything.
I've reinstalled before and simply reassembled mdadm arrays and remounted them before with no problems, but this is the first time I've used lvm, so I'm not sure what I have to do to restore everything. Is it as simple as reinstalling the system then doing a:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI cut paste sys folder, tmp folder, and many more folder to a backup storage place , after that folder icon and other icon converted into txt icon , i can make any folder but can't access, can't open storage, thrash disappear, terminal icon disappear, and also the application and places and system icons, after that someone suggested restarting may help but i can't restart it , so i unplugged the power wire and replugged it and restarted the system but it can't open , all things comes fail, and show INIT: "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes. after each 5 mins this msg is repeating

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

I've read about a lot of different software for backups but I'm not really sure which one would be the best for this. I want to be able to use this backup to restore the system just in case something happens. What would be the best software to use for this?
