I have an environement where I have several servers, a mix of both Windows and variouse linux flavours. How can I easilly administrer the linux boxes as easy as possible? On Windows I use RDP, but what are the opttions in Linux?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble getting a VNC session to a new OpenSuse 11.2 32bit machine I have just installed.Fresh off the DVD, tried under KDE4 and Gnome with the same result (each time a fresh install).In YAST, I enabled remote administration, open the firewall ports, and then try and connect from remote client (in this case I have tried RealVNC from windows, and krdc from a Suse 10.x client and via HTTP) all result in the same blank black screen (http does get an X cursor echoed on the screen)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get Remote Administration (vnc) working for the life of me. I tried the ip4/ip6 fix and every other work around I could find. I simply can't figure things out. I can't say I'm new to Linux but I can say that I am quite new to openSuse and the RPM world in general. My actual error isn't much of an error but that of the vnc window just being a black window that eventually times out.
As of now I access and configure the box vis ssh.I'm using:
openSuse 11.3
Gnome Desktop
Installed from gnome live CD
I'd like to administrate my parents' computer over the Internet. When I google for a tutorial on what I have to install and configure on my and their PC, I always end up with tutorials on servers and the like or tutorials for a connection between Ubuntu and Windows.
Does anyone know of an easy tutorial for remote desktop when two private, simple (Ubuntu-installed) PCs are involved?
I'm try to assess the viability of of setting up remote administration on a distant machine. Just for background, the computer I wish to administer is located on a boat in Southern Ireland while I'm in SE England. Sadly, the the boat operator is a far better fisherman than computer user and every now and then some rogue sensor numbers get captured by the boat's computer and these eventually need operator intervention. Anyone who has tried to talk a non PC literate user through correction routines over a dodgy mobile telephone while the said user is trying to operate mouse/keyboard in an Atlantic swell will appreciate the problem.
However, there is a fairly good mobile phone broadband signal available in the area so I was wondering if there was anyway I could set up a point to point connection with the boat over this medium. That would allow me to administer the machine remotely.

It is just a general discussion on "How Can Perl Be Useful in System Administration and Application Development on UNIX and Linux Platforms"? I am doing pretty much well with Bash and PHP. In fact, I am learning and experimenting in depth in those two domains. The project that I am working for these days has several scripts which are written in Perl and Ksh. They interact with Ab Initio graphs and perform extensive jobs. Anyways, my current role doesn't require me to have knowledge of Perl but I don't see any harm in learning something new.
So, before I take it, I want to know how Perl can help me and what I can do with it as a UNIX / Linux System Administrator and Application Developer? I just looked at some of its keywords, functions, and commands. Perl Variables are identical to those of PHP. Conditional Statements, Loops, etc. are also much the same as found in any other computer languages. So, at first glance, I have got this feel that it wouldn't be much difficult for me to learn it. But what do you say? Do I really need Perl when I am focusing on PHP and Bash?
I'd like to know some good resources, links, e-books to learn basic Linux system administration scripting. I know how to write very basic BASH shell scripts so I'm still at beginner level. There are so many docs out there that I'd like to narrow down people's opinion's on the best easy to understand resources that are available. Eventually I'd like to learn basic PERL as well.

2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk
3. User and group administration, with sudo access.
4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams.
5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting.
6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.
I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?
i am having a problem on Ubuntu 10.10. In system menu, there is no Administration or Preferences menu.Also, application menu does not show anything. I am using Ubuntu since 2 weeks and still not used to to the terminal commands for running applications and admin tools.
one more thing.When i booted my PC today it reported an error and process terminated before reaching the login window. So i restarted and chose recovery mode. it also reported some errors and tried to fix the problem. it deleted some files i think. and my system is working again but with above mentioned problem.
Installed the 64 bit version of Fedora 13. I can't log in on the graphical login with root. I can with the user I created.I can su to root after that in a terminal. Unable to locate the Administration menu but it's not where its suppose to be. yum gives me a error "refresh-packagekit" can't be imported
