General :: Inexpensive Web Content Filtering Options For Home Use?
Feb 18, 2011
I've been using an old Fortigate-60 at home for the kids for some time but now the license is expired again. Are there any free or inexpensive alternatives? I'd like something I can run on a linux firewall and share against multiple users, with different profiles. In the past I ran squid and I whitelisted sites each kid was allowed to use but this becomes tedious as the kids get older and need access to more. I'd love something that could check a website rating or category list, let the user through for certain categories, and block bad or unrated sites. I don't really need virus checking or email scanning or the like.

I work at a cybercafe and i am currently plagued by users who, despite the warning not to, continue to watch porn and use p2p software on my connection. I have done some preliminary research on how to filter the web content as well as to reduce the bandwidth used by p2p software on my network. I found that a solution that has worked for many with regard to web content control is danguardian + squid or privoxy in conjunction with a firewall like firehol or something of the sort. Others use an os like untangle or clear os and install it on a stand alone server. then others use open dns. although i would like the open dns solution, i will need to install a dns client, ddclient and i am a linux newbie so and ddclient requires some compiling or so, and i'm not yet into that. I am also currently not in the mood to dabble into untangle or clear os bcos it will cost me a lot do download the iso's. Internet access is costly over here.
Before i go ahead to implement the steps in any of the tutorials i have seen, i am wondering if such a measure will even help at all.You see, at my cafe, i use my server to share the connection to all my clients. I connect to the internet using a gsm modem. then i have two nic's. nic1 is set to share my connection and my router connects to that nic1. nic2 connects to my router using a static ip to enable communicate with my clients. If i implement something like dansguardian on my server, will it solve the problem for me, that is, do i have to also re-implement the steps i took to configure dansguardian on all the other pc's, that is, my clients?

My network is:
ISP --> SonicWALL--> Proxy --> LAN
Currently Sonicwall is running VPN, DHCP, port forwarding etc.. in a range of 10.0.0.0/24 and I have tried to configure Squid Proxy for content filtering (using squid 3 Transparent mode on Fedora 10 and Iptables). Now I need to implement the proxy over my network without changing the SonicWALL current settings (VPN, Port forwarding and DHCP).

I want to only search main tarball and delete it if older than 7 days.

I'm looking for an inexpensive but reliable web hosting service. Have been using Byet, but they have yet to successfully renew the subscription, so am in the market for another service. It doesn't need to have great tech support, just reliably keep the site up. cpanel, of course, is a plus.

Is there some way to filter output of command by OR condition in Linux? There is filtering by AND condition with grep in way like:
ls -l | grep "^a" | grep "z$"
That says: list all files that beggins with "a" AND ends with "z" (so there is shorter way to write this: grep "^a.*z$", but it is not matter). Is there some way to perform test by OR condition? For example: files that starts exactly with "xen" OR files that ends exactly with ".rpm". But exactly, not something like:
grep "[xen]{0,3}.*[.rpm]{0,4}"

Are there any firewalls for Linux that will allow one to block certain ports for a specific application while allowing other programs to use the same port, or block Internet access altogether for specific applications?
Everything based on IPTables apparently can only block ports globally for all applications. SELinux is the only thing I've found so far that might have application-level Internet blocking capability, but it serves a broader array of security purposes and seems too complex for this task.
I don't need interactive popups like with Windows personal firewalls. I'm OK with having to edit a config file. This is for personal desktop Linux use, not a server.

I have created custom rules following: edit > message filters > incoming filter > (custom filter), none work. Also, by right clicking a message and, create rule from message > filter based by subject, sender, and recipients. Accepting all default (auto populated) conditons. None of the filters work at all? Seems this is a popular problem that has not found a solution except to use Thunderbird. not including ThunderbirdWhen I select a message that is supposed to be filtered to a specific folder and go to Message > Apply Filters. message goes to the assigned folder, but I want it to skip the inbox all together.

I have some big files of logs that contain errors printed by an app. They are most of the time relevant, however most of them are similar. So i figured i could check what happened between a time interval with a find.
Im using this one
Code:
And I get an output similar to this one.
Code:
Is there a way to condensate the output lines to get only one or two, indicating the start and last occurrence of a block? Or I need to create a program to do so?
Because right now I get thousands of similar lines, but when I'm scrolling through them i sometimes miss relevant information that i would've otherwise noted if it wasn't all that spammy.

I'm looking for doing AOE (Ata over ethernet) inexpensively with single board computers, like Routerboard stuff, but is there anything with sata plugs. Hopefully I can get each board for hopefully around $50, but a little more would be ok. Non-x86 is fine, Debian is as good as Ubuntu.

So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

I have a secondary disk which holds a /home directory structure from a previous install of Linux. I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -
Code:
login as: [me]
[me]@[machine]'s password:
Last login: Wed Jan 6 18:34:33 2010 from [machine]
Could not chdir to home directory /home/[me]: Permission denied
[[me]@[machine] /]$
Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.

Is there anything special about a home directory before users' home directories are stored there, or is just as typical as any other "empty" folder?Let me just cut to the chase, but please no ear ringing about the folly of messing around as root, particularly with directories at root level. I know it's considered stupidity, but I deleted my home directory.
Is there an easy way to restore a working home directory? I tried copying /etc/skel under root, but I'm not sure what a home directory should look like once it has been restored. Besides . & .., there were .screenrc & .xsession in my home directory when I copied /etc/skel. Are these files suppose to be in "/home" or "/home/~" or both?

i am using rhel5 and i just wanted to see the contents of the initrd image. I have copied that from /boot/grub and saved in /tmp directory. Then i did the following
#mv initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#gunzip initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#mount -o loop initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img /mnt
when i gave that, it says "mount: you must specify the filesystem type" Then i included "-t ext2" option in the mount command. Now it says,
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Then i created a ext2 filesystem and did the same thing. But there is no difference.
