I am trying to use Postfix as my first step in the learning to send / receive email. I have tried almost all ways but failed to send email. Linux is indeed quit difficult. I installed posfix 2.3 using yum install postfix. I dont have any DNS yet.my postfix main.cf settings are:

mydomain = localhost (even tried example.com, $mydomain here but failed)
myorigin = $mydomain

make install then i got this error: postfix: fatal: chdir(/usr/libexec/postfix): No such file or directory make: *** [install] Error 1 I don't understand why it's checking the usr/libexec folder for the daemons although I've set the folder to /opt/product/postfix-2.6.5/libexec in the makefile. I've got a server running 9.10, and I'm having a few issues with SMTP. It's got Postfix and Dovecot installed, and eventually I'll add content filtering, but I need to get past this issue first.
I know there's a lot of posts out there for Postfix issues, but I haven'tbeen able to find one specific to my issue.
IMAP and POP3 work fine through SSL, and the server can send mail without any problems. That's all fine and dandy, but I need to utilize an e-mail client (like evolution or outlook). Everytime I set up a user in Evolution, the smtp connection times out, or is refused. I know it's not a firewall issue. Port 25 is open, as well as 465. So I should be able to connect through SSL. I want to be able to connect through SMTP using the same credentials as IMAP.

everytime I get things rolling, this issue pops up. I don't know if it's something I'm setting up wrong in the client, or if it's a configuration error on my part in postfix.
I'm also having a bit of an issue with my aliases. I've basically got a lot of addresses going to root, then root going to the main user, but it's not actually delivering the mail to the main user. It sends it straight to root.
My fail2ban won't block relay attempts (it does block ssh)

I'm getting relay access denied to an email outside of my domain. It seems the passwords are authenticating because I'm not getting invalid password prompts.

I got a Debian 6 Server running and it uses Postfix as MTA. I have set up 3 Domains and a catch all rule. My virtual file looks like this:alice@aaa.com alicebob@aaa.com bob@aaa.com bob@bbb.com bob@ccc.com bobIt works fine so far. Now I tried to add this line on top:something@aaa.com aliceand it did not work (mail gets delivered to the catch all address). It seems, it works ONLY if the part before the domain and the local recipient are equal. Does that make sense to anyone? What did I missconfigure

I want this development machine to support virtual mailboxes so that I can use them from multiple apps and create real life deployment situations.I installed postfix + dovecot following the tutorials available here and current state is - I can send mails using telnet sessions and I see that the mail files are getting created in /Maildir form as I have directed in the conf files. I have configured Thunderbird mail client as well.
Issue #1: Mail sending works from Thunderbird but it always responds back with 'No mail on server' message when I try to receive mails. SMTP is configured with STARTTLS and POP3 with None (i.e. plain text password)Issue #2: Also, while going thru conf, logs and during testing - I found a few things which defer in this installation for authentication. I have given the session transcripts here.Issue #3: That being major issue - I also want to configure my virtual users to use TB client to access their mails - I did not find any tutorials or pointers towards that in my search for past few days. On my virtual server I had the same issue within the last three month. The postfix daemon stopped working suddenly and I don't know why. I can restart postfix normally and it's working normally for a couple of weeks until the next crash. Does anyone have the same problems with CentOS 5.6 and postfix?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am re setting up a server of mine running red hat enterprise Linux server 6 and I had all of this working befor but for some reason I had troubles getting sasl to work and now when I login my smtp server I get an error stating that my username or password is incorrect though I am sure I am entering both correctly. Would anyone know what could be happening? I have been spending days on the web looking for the solution and only went from sasl not working when started as a service to this. For some reason I can't use Pam with saslauthd and had to use shadow instead of which from what I hear I get to use better methods of secure authentication with smtp

View 1 Replies View Relatedso i set out to change the default smtp port the server uses because my ISP blocks port 25 and i need the email to work in outlook. this morning i could receive email, but not send it. so i did some research and thought that i needed to edit the master.cf file in /etc/postfix/ by commenting out this line: smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -oand replace it with587 inet n - n - - smtpd (587 being the port i want to use)somewhere along the lines postfix server stopped running and now i cannot get it to start.if i try using SSH it crashes immediately and if i restart it in simple control panel nothing happens

However there is something wrong as when i run postfix: service postfix server i get no error but when checking the status:service postfix status i get: master dead but pid file exists Looking into /var/log/mailog i find this line being the issue:

I was trying to write a graph plotting program with c++. I need to convert the infix expression from user to postfix expression for quick evaluation. However, the evaluation of postfix is kind of interpreted, and thus kind of slow for evaluating huge number of values. Say if I plot an implicit function the penalty is quite huge. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have isntalled a server with Centos 5.2 OS, now I would like to switch from the default sendmail to postfix doing a yum install postfix I've noticed there is already available an rpm version for the OS but I would like to compile my own 2.5 version, I've noticed compiling from source does not allow me to use the mail switcher to tell to the system I'm gonna use Postfix instead of Sendmail as the default MTA while this is possible when I use the "official" rpm version of the package. Now my question is this, would this be a problem? There is some specific procedure/best practice I should follow? Or once compiled and configured Postfix I can safely disable/uninstall sendmail?
View 6 Replies View Relatedi compiled and install postfix, and i using relayhost that point to my ISP. but my "DNS server" is on the same server where is installed postfix. and there is running apache with vhosts so i have domain that hosted on same server and in zonefiles of my domain my MX records points to Google Apps, to google's MX servers. But when i try send E-mail via sendmail to mail@mydomainonsameserver.com it not deliver mail to Google Apps totally, if i try to send to another E-mail everything fine it deliver it. so finally i done research this problem in Internet. And find that need to disable deliver mail to localhost(localdelivery)as i think postfix understand that the domain point to the same server where postfix have itself. and try to deliver mail local. but zonefile MX record even the domain on same server can point to another server outside. So i disabled localdelivery in postfix. and problem not fixed

I installed mailx and used the mail command to send an email to my external email address, worked just fine. sent it to another email, worked as well.
But the problem is, I do 'telnet localhost 25' to test it like they say, it connects. I run 'ehlo localhost' Nothing happens.
I've tried setting it up with Thunderbird on my home pc and it connects to the IMAP & POP servers just fine, but it cannot establish a connection with SMTP, I've tried changing the SMTP port to other ones, still no luck.
Oh BTW, I use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
I am facing problem in postfix. I am using centos5.2.My postfix was running well but some strange problem it failed today.after that I wanted to restart postfix service , it does not restrat. But the postfix process is found in the process list( take memory and cpu ). Then i want to reinstall the postfix.The progress bar show it completed but not showing the completed message. After upgrading from a working 9.10 system to 10.04 Postfix has stopped delivery email to users. Sending email is fine and IMAP(s) and POP are working fine but receiving messages now get the follwing message

I just upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 server to 10.04 and now I cannot receive mail on my Ubuntu 10.04 Evolution client, although I can send mail. No errors appear in auth.log or mail.log when I attempt to log in from my Evolution client, in fact mail.log shows 'pop3d-ssl: connection' from my laptop IP, followed by 'pop3d: Disconnected' when the log-in attempts fail.
I'm able to ssh into the server using the same log-on and password as before the upgrade, however I haven't changed the public or private keys in my .ssh directory. I updated the ssl keys in /etc/postfix/ssl but wasn't able to receive mail before or after the update.
The error in the client reads: 'Unable to connect to POP server mail.mydomain.com, error sending username'

Currently i'm figuring out how to send email notifications to users when services went down in Nagios. I know i need to install and configure Postfix, which i did already. I assume that when i configured to point it to "Satellite mail system" is the correct one instead of other things like "Internet.." etc. So the configurations is when you have installed the Postfix and there would pop a lot of questions right? Other than that, what have i missed?
Oh ya, i remember something. Hmm. I do not have any so-called real smtp server so would that be alright? I heard that installed and getting the Postfix running would be enough as it serves as a MTA (mail transfer agent). So if i do not have any smtp server, the relay host= ' ' what should i put it as?
I am on Scientific Linux. While trying to remove sendmail, YUM asked to remove depended packages:
alpine
fetchmail
mdadm
mutt
redhat-lsb
sendmail-cf
Should I really remove them and sendmail? If trying to install potfix, YUM does not say that sendmail is incompatible and does not ask to remove it.
