Oct 12, 2010
openSUSE 11.3 KDE 4.5.2. GTK app's, specifically firefox, do not accept KDE system colours despite "Apply colours to non-KDE4 applications" being set in System Settings. Ideas? TIA.

Code:

Password:
Permissions on the password database may be too restrictive.
su: incorrect password

I recently did a clean install of Maverick Meerkat and copied a few configuration files from my old system. I can log on normally, and the system works just fine. However, when I lock the workstation with any method, the system will not accept my password. I'm certain that I'm typing it correctly (I tried over 20 times) and that the capslock is not on. When I reboot, I can log in again just fine. In other words, my password only works at initial login, not when unlocking the workstation.

When kupdate applet started up, it popped up this window:
Code:
Do you want to accept this repository signature?
package_id :dummy;0.0.1;i386;data
repository_name: KDE_4_Stable
key_url: [URL]
key_userid:KDE OBS Project <KDE@build.opensuse.org>
key_id: 27C070176F88BB2F
key_fingerprint: ...elided...
key_timestamp: Fri Apr 16 06:26:59 2010

What is this? Why am I getting it? Is it safe to accept? I edited the key fingerprint.

I have NVIDIA installed and I have the repo installed as well, but I have not made any changes to it. So why all of a sudden am I getting the following popup? Is it safe? Should I accept it?
Code:
Do you want to accept this repository signature?
package_id: dummy,0.0.1,i386,data
repository_name: NVIDIA_Repository_1
key_url: [URL]
key_userid:NVIDIA Corporation <linux-bugs@nvidia.com>

key_fingerprint: (I'm hiding this just in case it's a security risk)
key_timestamp: Thu Jun 15 12:13:18 2006
type: gpg
Also, why am I getting it now if it's from 2006?

Just installed SUSE11.3 and everything was ok until did initial online update. Following update, YAST will not accept root password when launched from KDE (have not tried other window managers). Dialog box is presented to enter root password. It reports back "invalid root password". But I can run yast or yast2 from command line (as root) and that seems to come up, but not all items seem to work.
I can log in as root with no problem. Only YAST will not accept my password. I'm running KDE on a Dell D610. Ran SUSE 11.0 for several years, absolutely no problem.

I'm running 64-bit 11.3 on a Dell 1535 laptop. At lunch today, the system booted-up as normal, then shut-down as normal. A handful of updates were installedduring that time. This evening, however, I arrive at the password splash screen, enter my password, and then the system churns a few seconds before resetting the splash screen. No error message, no "wrong password," just a normal splash screen. I tried going into Xen, the default 11.3 and failsafe -- same thing happened with each. When I navigated to the command line, my password worked fine, both for user and super-user.

Still a flawed KnetworkManager in the released 11.3.No user control for cabled 10/100 lan ports. Yast config for the eth0 says it can have usercontrol by networkmanager. Oh no it doesn't.It seems to cater for wi-fi users only who get a "enable wireless" tickbox and "manage connections". At least you can stop and start it.Meanwhile cable users who might have a taskbar display for lan traffic can see stuff pouring in, or out and if it's something they don't want they can't do anything about it unless they pull the plug.

The login screen does not accept the password for users. Only the password for Root. The problem is not in the command line, but check the password in the screen. I have tried to change the password from the root and it is still the problem. What I can do?

I have just installed openSuse 11.4 and have been trying to get my Edimax EW-7711In wireless card to work. I have downloaded and installed NDISWRAPPER but when I type ndiswrapper -i /path/to/rt2860.inf I get a message saying that this is the incorrect driver. However this driver drives the card for both Fedora 14 and Ubuntu 10.10, both using ndiswrapper, so what may be the problem with openSuse 11.4?

The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

I have two sound devices, an internal audio device on my motherboard and an external USB devices, which came with my headset. After upgrading to 11.4, the microphone on my headset ceased to work with my softphone. As it turned out, the softphone used the standard input device, which was defined in the Phonon tab in the KDE System Settings. Unfortunately, when I put the USB Device on top of the default input stack, it doesn't stay there. When I apply the changes and leave the Phonon tab or even enable "Show advanced devices " the stack always resets to its initial order. I was unable to find any kind of config file where Phonon saves this settings.

i have two questions and thought that anyone here could have the answers.first things first,i want to make firewall accept a range of ports (say 8000:9000) because im using mpd process manager to make some parallel processing, does anyone know the command that satisfy this?
the second thing is, when i open a range of ports like that, it would put my system at risk if some bad guys somehow identifies this range, is there is anything that solves that matter(i.e. makes the firewall monitor the packet, if its an mpd accept if not drop)

In other Fedora machines I've had I get some default colours at the terminal for showing thinks like links/directories/broken links etc.On this machine, FC12 64bit, I don't seem to have anything set. I've seen a number of articles explaining how to customise the terminal but I'm quite happy to accept a default set.Any idea how to reset the terminal so it uses a default theme of some sort?

I have been having problems recently due to the changes to the Display configuration between various Fedora versions. They used to have the "system-config-display" application which only real fault was that it was not terribly good at setting up multiple monitors. Now they have "gnome-display-properties", which is better for dual or triple head, but worse for everything else and has been given me mostly pain since the switch.
At any rate, "system-config-display" had the option of changing the display to only have 16 bit colours, which I need for certain older games or games made with old engines. This option is not available from "gnome-display-properties". Is there a nice desktop environment or distribution agnostic command that one can put into a terminal to change the display between 16-bit and 32 bit colours?

What are openSuSE's plans as to the release of an rpm with openssl-0.8.9m which has the solution to the renegotiation man-in-the-middle attack, not just turning key renegotiation down?
As a companion to this version of openssl Apache HTTP 2.2.15 would be very desirable, as it incorporates a patch that allows - at the site's discretion - to refuse or accept the insecure "old-style" key renegotiation.

Anyone know what the 'ls' command means when it outputs the file name in red on black, with the permissions, owner, etc. all missing? The 'man' page was of no help. In the example below, from a DVD ROM, the third file was OK and I could read it. The first two could not be read, even as root.

Here is an example:

I tried plying around with Preferences/Appearances but everything seems to be ok there. Also, if in FireFox I choose 'Use System colours' everything looks ghastly.

I would like to ask how to change the colours on the screen. I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10 (04?) I think ... well that is what it said on the download page, so I guess it must be But it is terribly dull! All black, is there any way to make it a litte less boring, please. I am not a Goth and my computer would not be black were it not for the fact that I haven't gotten around to spraying it blue. Or green. Well, that is actually part of the problem. So many to choose from.Anyway - I looked in the system and the administration but there was no manner to do this.
