I've decided it's time to dump WinXP from my 2yr Acer Aspire One. I'm intriqued by Ubuntu Netbook Edition but is this the best way to go? I'm comfortable with GUI but I'm not adverse to using command-line. This device is used for engineering field work (wifi web access, notepad, pdf documents, design file review).

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.
Which 64-bit distro works the best these days?I'm using Ubuntu 32-bit on my Acer at present.

I already installed the backtrack linux and I able to make it work the both wireless and wired network connections and also the sound card is also working. But the problem is that I unable to configure 1360x768 resolution of the display. View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).
I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with
/boot on 100MB /sda5
Swap on 1GB /sda6
/ on the 40GB+ /sda7
When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.
I want a distro I can run on my very weak netbook, and perhaps on one or two other of my other computers as well. Netbook is an Asus eeePC 900SD (Celeron 800mhz, 512MB RAM, 8GB SDD, 1024x600 screen resolution), very slow with some distros, but nimble with others.
I've tried:
Ubuntu Netbook Remix (EasyPeasy), Leeenux, JoliCloud: too resource hungry on this machine, too much storage consumed just for the OS. Peppermint OS - pros: works well, nice, very few bugs, fast.cons: space requirements, memory requirements make it a bit tight, cloud apps are slower than locally installed ones, the permanent inclusion of a paid-subscription cloud app, and fascist support forum moderators. a bit overweight, and way too cloud-centric - many of the cloud apps are on unreliable servers and not always available or slow down your netbook to a crawl while it waits for some executable code to come off the web. Puppeee version 1.0 (and Fluppy for all netbooks), works very well, very fast, in little RAM with little disk space required. Some may not like the overcrowded menus and their structure that's inherited from the parent Puppy. Puppy 5.1: works very well compared to the 4.3 series. wifi works now. But same menu comments as for Puppeee. Slitaz: at 30MB for the iso, it sounded promising, and the interface is very nice, much nicer than any of the other minimalistic distros. but Wifi? no help on the horizon.
AntiX: some stuff just didn't work properly, including Wifi WPA. but it looked real good. For the space and memory requirements look to Peppermint. TinyMe2010: this is the size of Puppy, and polished like Peppermint. Based on a slimmed-down Unity, it is still in beta, the installer won't install from USB stick. If you have a CD to install from this is a great distro! Lets hope they fix the USB issue soon! Very promising... keep a watch on this one.

I've tried dozens of distros, and find it frustrating to deal with the various crippling flaws of some distros and the egos of the assemblers of other distros (where they can easily fix something but refuse to because they prefer an older faulty way). I am at my whit's end here. Please help me someone.
From us Noob's point of view: the new re-release of Windows XP for Legacy computers with only 64MB of RAM, it may be time to re-visit our thinking that minimalistic Linux distros are the only kid on the block for those slower machines with less resources. Time to get back to the drawing board and make these a little more user-welcoming. ;-)
I have been using my Acer Aspire One Netbook, with Linux Lite v1.0.13.E as loaded on purchase, happily for a year or so. Yesterday, when I clicked on the Browser picture to open up Firefox, nothing happened. I can't find how to access anything which will let me check if the icon has lost a link. I have looked on the File Manager and can see the .mozilla folder but don't know what to look for, nor what to do from here.
I have now managed to add the sub-menu which was linked to here: [URL] as a way to Install apps. I can now use this directory to try and open Firefox Web Browser - I then get the message "Failed to execute default web browser Input/output error.
I recently installed Linux Mint Julia 10 on my netbook and it is great.no issues from USB install.My question is what is a smaller distro I can use for netbook...and will it install as easy as Mint 10.I only use netbook for emails and web searches for information..I have no harware issues ..except for my lack of knowledge of Linux.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhile installing the openSuSE on my Netbook (Acer AspireOne D250) with a bootable thumbdrive Live image, the installation seemed to go fine, but after the installation was completed, there was no "network"! I checked and the system auto-sensed the drivers, but when I go into the network, even trying to manually set up the IP info, Yast reports NO NETWORK running!!
I then went out and bought a USB CD-ROM drive and installed using the boot CD (Network install) on the external USB CD-ROM drive. It booted up fine, and installed "RIGHT OFF OF THE NETWORK", but when the install was through, I could not access the network. Same error: NO NETWORK RUNNING!! Now I've installed openSuSE on this unit before (v11.4) and it worked fine (after I changed the wireless driver to the legacy driver) but this time it's NOT working!! My 13yr old son uses the Netbook, and was so excited to get to use LINUX instead of Windows ... until now.

When i tried to install firefox 3 (default browser is firefox 2 ), yum hangs and refuses to do anything. I tried deleting and reinstalling yum, and it was mostly successful until i tried the "make" command which according to bash does not exist. how to install make without using yum?

When I created the USB using the Universal USB Installer app, I created a 1GB persistence on my 4GB USB. I now want to install rather than run from the thumb drive, except when I get to partition area, it's showing no drives at all. I had XP, but I'd like to use the entire disk for UNE now. how to get it to install?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just worked out how to get the wireless card working with an Acer Aspire D260 wireless card to work.
Enter terminal command;
sudo apt-get install wifi-radar
Then reboot ubuntu 10.04 after it has installed, network manager should now detect wireless networks in range and allow connection, right click network manager icon and select "Enable Wireless" or "Disable wireless" as required to turn on or off. So many others have had problems getting the wifi to work with Acer Aspire D260 netbooks and ubuntu 10.04.

I am booting ubuntu using unetbootin (USB). Why is it freezing?
STEP 1) Install Slackware 13.1 (everything works out of the box*) Gotcha: 3d isn't enabled in X Fix: Yes it is... run glxgears from a console or run glxinfo | grep render.
Gotcha: No CD drive to install from Fix 1: Get a usb CDROM drive Fix 2: Boot off of a thumbdrive using the usbboot.img (found on disc 6) Gotcha: Card Reader (ENE Technology) doesn't work Fix: You have to use the MMC driver-modprobe mmc_core modprobe sdhci modprobe mmc_blockIt should now show up in dmesg and /dev/mmcblk0p1 should be created if it is an SD card. NOTE: SD Card portion works using SDHCI driver. NO DRIVERS for XD and MS cards yet. *Card reader is gimped due to ENE Technology being evil.
I just tried to install ubuntu 10.04 to the hard drive of my netbook as i prefer it greatly over the standard linpus one. The operating system booted fine from a bootable usb drive and so i thought if i install it it should run.
so...i got to work installing the system...it completed and asked me to restart, which i did. From there the boot up screen comes on for the pc.....the one where it says press f2 for setup and f12 for boot priority....then goes to a black screen. on this black screen i have a message which says...
"error: no such device: 992fddd7-54c1-45e0-b990-7220c6fa9005 grub rescue>"
I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.
I just found it out now, after installed the skype and tried setup my web/audio on it, the webcam works fine but the mic doesn't work, so i went to the audio menu on fedora 14 and found it out the mic is dead.Someone had the same issue? Can someone let me know what can i do to fix that?

View 3 Replies View RelatedLubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).
LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.
I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?
