Debian Multimedia :: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 Keyxhost: Unable To Open Display ":0"

i recently moved from Ubuntu to Debian(squeeze).. i am very pleased with squeeze except for this bug..I have this python script i wrote to change my wallpaper (through Gconf), the script would be called by cron from time to time.The problem i am facing in Debian is that this script stopped working.I am exporting the $DISPLAY=:0 in Cron, (this is how it worked in Ubuntu)..the cron job i used is below:

-----------
* * * * * export DISPLAY=:0 && /path/to/my/script.py

so the above was not running...I redirected the output and this is what i got as error:

General :: How Does Compiz Decide Which Windows Should Be Sticky?

Dec 14, 2010

How does Compiz automatically decide which windows should be sticky (i.e. should be visible on all workspaces)? Windows such as gnome-panel and cairo-dock always stay on the visible workspace, without requiring additional configuration. How does Compiz figure this out?

General :: How To Use Compiz To Achieve What WinSplit Revolution Does On Windows

May 2, 2010

I've used WinSplit Revolution for quite some time on Windows and have become attached to it.I'm now trying out a Linux OS (Ubuntu 10.04) and would really like to get the same functionality back again.After searching on the net I found a "grid" plugin for compiz which says that it was inspired by WinSplit revolution.

I haven't installed the Grid plugin yet, because under the install section on that page, it says "Note that grid is now included in compiz so you're unlikely to need to fetch from git unless you've an old version of compiz", which would seem to suggest that the grid functionality has now been built into compiz somewhere. The thing is, I don't know where to find it in the CompizConfig Settings Manager nor how to set it up. All I want to have happen is that I get identical functionality to WinSplit revolution, where I press Ctrl + Alt + [some numpad key] to position a window on a screen and press Ctrl + Alt + [left or right arrow] to shift a window between dual screens.

General :: Compiz Stops Updating Windows On A Multi-head System - Keyboard And Mouse Still Alive?

Dec 8, 2010

I am running Fedora F14 on an Intel I3 cpu w/4Gb memory and plenty of disk. I have two displays connected to the Gigabyte Motherboard, one of the HDMI connector, and one on a DVI connector. I run Gnome. When Compiz is enabled things work fine for a while, meaning hours or days. Then the displays will "freeze" to the point where the clock stops updating. The system itself is still running programs, services, and the mouse and keyboard work. The mouse cursor will move around, but nothing can be clicked upon. If a terminal was the open window, typing on the keyboard does not do anything, nor does ctrl-backspace or whatever it is to terminate X windows. The keyboard does allow me to press ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to one of the base consoles. Once there I can type to my hearts content. I can kill off my logged in Gnome session through the console, and I can shutdown the system in a controlled manner.

It is as if all of the windows stop updating. For example, I play music through Amarok. An hour after I stop using the system but letting the music play the screens will do their lockup. The clock will stop, and Amarok will stop updating which song it is playing. It continues to play each song in the playlist, but the Amarok window shows what was playing at the time that the clock stopped. I've also had this happen to me while using Yumex, where it would stop updating the screen while installing programs, but the programs do get installed. With Compiz off I don't have this problem.

The version of Compiz I am using is currently 0.8.6-3. It is running on Gnome 2.32.0-2, with a Linux kernel of 2.6.35.9-64. It has happened with earlier versions of these programs. I am using the graphics processing the Intel i3 chip to the motherboard connectors. The freeze generally happens at some random time while I am not actively using the system. It has happened to me while doing simple things like programming through an IDE. The really strange thing to me is that the cursor will move around on the screen after everything else stops updating.

I found a few forums posts and programs that can do the trick and guides in how to use the programs but I have no idea how to install them.You have to know that my linux machine is a NAS server and has therefore only Konsole access (no GUI). General :: Partition Magic Remove The Ubuntu OS?

Nov 18, 2010

I have a hard disk that I would like to completely remove UBUNTU from. There is no other OS on it. UBUNTU is on all of the HD no unused partitions that I can see or other windows system here at all. I would like to completely remove UBUNTU and remove GRUB also. and be able to use this HDD for a windows system. Most of the threads I have read here in the forum relate to removing ubuntu from a dual OS HDD . There is talk of using partition magic or other utility to remove or change the partitions,but most of them are about a dual OS system, whereas I have an HDD with only ubuntu on it. Does UBUNTU have an uninstall program that I can download? Does partition magic remove the Ubuntu OS? Grub?

I have come across a problem on my Scientific Linux, I have searched the forum but couldn't find what I am looking for, so I decided to post my question here.well, here what I did: under the Terminal I got Cramfs-1.1.tar.gz installed, and then i used the "make" command to build the cramfsck and mkcramfs and it was all successful.so now I have an image I called it "backup.img", and I tried following command:./cramfsck -x ./output backup.imgbut unfortunetly I got the following message:./cramfsck: superblock magic not foundSo I kept on thinking what is this Superblock magic thingy? I did a google search but I kind of got lost and didn't end up finding anything useful, but I am just thinking it could be some kind of package which I need to install? I tried the following command:apt-get install magicbut it seems there is not such package exists with that name.

General :: Adding A Kernel In GRUB For Kubuntu 9.10: Invalid Magic Number

Apr 19, 2010

I've compiled and added a kernel in Gentoo before. It doesn't seem to go quite as smoothly in Kubuntu 9.10 These are the steps I followed: I unpacked the kernel in /usr/src and ran make && make modules_install succesfully. Then I copied the kernel in arch/x86/boot/bzImage to /boot/bzImage-2.6.32 This entry is the one given by Kubuntu:

Code:

menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1

[code]....

I just read the script that update grub uses. Changed the name of the kernel from xyz to vmlinuz-2.6.32-generic and it worked.

Ubuntu :: Lost Gnome After Activating Open GL In Compiz / Get It Back?

Jun 12, 2011

I ran the compiz --replace command and I was playing about with Compiz. I wanted to active that rotating desktop cube. The screen froze when I activated it and I ended up doing a hard reboot by pressing and holding the power button.

Now, when I log in, the gnome bar at the top has gone, the window 'decorations' have gone (no minimize, etc) and the new gnome launcher on the left of the screen has gone

Any advice on how to get thing back to the way they were?

General :: Not Able To Open Windows EXE File Using Wine

Feb 9, 2011

I'm doing so because my doubt is with regards to running a windows app in linux. I am a freelance writer and use article spinning software like "TheBestSpinner" occasionally. Usually I log into windows XP (I have a dual boot) for this. I am however trying to see if it is possible for me to run this software in linux using wine. I am still relatively a newbie in linux as I have been using Mint 10 for only 6 months. I'm am familiar with the command line but generally use the GUI mostly. I installed the software but when I tried to run the .exe file I got an error that said that I had to install mono for windows. I did that too and installed it inside wine. I am now getting an error that I am unable to resolve by myself because google is not helping me. I am posting the output of what I get when I try running it below.

That said, I encountered a weird glitch in Compiz, specifically with its 3D Windows plugin. It's not really a big deal, but it bugs me, so I might as well give it a shot and ask about it here. With the 3D Windows activated, this is what I get:

what causes this and how can I fix it? I'm using the latest NVIDIA propietary drivers. If you need me to post any additional info, I'll be happy to comply.
