General :: Apt-get Install Command Is Not Able To Fetch Packages From Ubuntu Repository?
May 8, 2010
I have been working on Redhat family of distributions since past 1 year. Two days back I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I am novice to Package Management in Debian family of Linux distributions. My Internet connection is working fine. But I am not able to install any package with apt-get package Manager. Here is my /etc/apt/sources.list file
Code:
deb http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted
deb-src http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted
deb http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates main restricted
[code]....

Is it possible to install all packages from an APT repository?
I know it is possible to do it manually, but then you would need to know all the package names, and I don't.
I want to install all the packages from BackTrack into my Ubuntu installation. I really don't like the idea of having it in a VM and having a separate partition for it is even more out of the question. I know that the folks at BackTrack doesn't like it when people leech their repositories, but that's what you get for releasing open source software. Stupid? maybe.. A valid reason? probably not.. Do I still want it? Yes.
Another edit: I have now given up on this as it seems impossible to get it to work even by manually installing packages.

Update Manager fails to update the files in Karmic 9.10. The Internet access is fine but it fails to fetch from repository (404). I haven't changed any setting but since yesterday I realized the Update Manager is not working. I tried different servers and results were the same. It seems the packages are available in the server (checked by firefox), while Ubuntu can not find them. As I am using Bell-Sympatico as ISP, I am not behind any proxy.

I have access to backup server via rsync protocol (only rsync, nothing else). Now, I want to fetch file from there (which is .tar.gz) and pass it directly to tar command, without saving the archive in local filesystem. To visualize, with ssh access I could:
ssh remote_host cat backup.file.tar.gz | tar xzf - And I will get uncompressed backup locally, without actually storing .tar.gz on local machine. Is it possible to achieve when using rsync?

I've made sure everything is patched current prior to the upgrade and have tried clearing out the contents of /var/cache/apt/archives/partial first as well to no avail.

I recently discovered the medibuntu repository and wanted to add the repository to synaptic. I copied and pasted the code from this: [URL] web page on medibuntu.org's website.
The attachment shows exactly what the terminal spit out after running this command (and the command that was run - of course). What I am wondering about is the last six lines - which seem to indicate that, at a minumum, getting some key was not successful. I'm not sure how important this is; but, since I don't actually have anything I need to install from this repository right now, I wanted to be sure I'm squared away for when a time may come in the future.
After running the command I did the following to try and determine the status:
I went into synaptic > settings > repositories and looked under two of the tabs to see what was there:
The tab, "Other Sortware" Lists two entries at the bottom that stood out to me. They are:
Medibuntu - Ubuntu 11.04 "natty narwhal" (http:// packages.medibuntu.org/natty free non free) which was checked.
And:
Medibuntu (Source) - Ubuntu 11.04 "natty narwhal" (http:// packages.medibuntu.org/natty free non free) (Source Code) which was not checked.
The tab, "Authentication" lists a total of three entries. Their descriptions are:
Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key
Ubuntu CD Image Automatic Signing Key
And:
Ubuntu Extras Archive Automatic Signing Key
None of those (under this Authentication tab) strike me as having anything to do with medibuntu (could be wrong though - just not sure).
Finally, I did a search in synaptic for a library I think should be available through medibuntu, "libdvdcss." I was presented with a list of eight items, none of them matching libdvdcss by title. The closest match by title and description that I could identify was, "libdvdread4" This I did as a sort of test to see if I might be accessing that repository.

Just installed Lucid from CD ROM. I have 2 HDDs. When the install screen came to ask about partitions, it didn't seem to want me to install it onto the same HDD as my XP/Ubuntu 9.10 partitions, so I installed it onto my other HDD. After it finished, I restarted and it appeared on GRUB. It takes me to a command line where it asks me for my desktop login and then my password.
It allows me to type in my login, but the password isn't so easy. It won't let me type it in. It's as if the keyboard stops working apart from the return key. I have no understanding of command line. As soon as I'd entered my password, it went on to tell me that there were no packages to install, and then stayed on command line as if I'd just opened a terminal. How would I get it to take me to my desktop?

For some reason apt tries to download Packages instead of Packages.bz2 and Packages.gz and I neither know why nor how to fix it.

Couple of days I go I setup VLC using Kubuntu's graphic software manager, and installed the 3 plug-ins, one of which was related to pulse. After doing this sound stopped working in flash videos. I had read, not sure where, that Kubuntu didn't use pulse (which slipped my mind when setting up VLC).
So I make the mistake of removing everything which had pulse in it's name (again, via the graphic software manager). A message popped-up saying that some packages needed to be removed/edited (a LONG list, a big clue that I was doing something stupid I guess). I let it run it's course and after that it won't boot properly.
If I boot it normally it hangs at the Kubuntu screen with the five dots filling endlessly. If I press F1 it's stuck at "checking battery status."
Recovery mode boots, but the recovery option does nothing.
So I was wondering if I could boot into recovery mode and go into the terminal and add a live USB as a repository for apt, and try to salvage the install?
Or should I admit defeat and reinstall?

Currently i am using mapserver 5.0.3 , AGG 2.5-6 on fedora 9. I need some help with mapserver and AGG support. I am trying to use AGG/PNG outformat in the mapfile as well as i added precisely. When i call the link through browser i recieved the following error:
loadOutputFormat(): General error message. OUTPUTFORMAT clause references driver AGG/PNG, but this driver isn't configured. It is clearly evident that from the error, the driver is not configured. since all the mapserver version 5 suppotrs AGG rendering backend, so i checked whether mapserver supports AGG or not.
[kapil@localhost cgi-bin]$ mapserv -v
MapServer version 5.0.3 OUTPUT=GIF OUTPUT=PNG OUTPUT=JPEG OUTPUT=WBMP OUTPUT=SVG SUPPORTS=PROJ SUPPORTS=FREETYPE SUPPORTS=WMS_SERVER SUPPORTS=WMS_CLIENT SUPPORTS=WFS_SERVER SUPPORTS=WFS_CLIENT SUPPORTS=WCS_SERVER SUPPORTS=SOS_SERVER SUPPORTS=THREADS SUPPORTS=GEOS INPUT=TIFF INPUT=POSTGIS INPUT=OGR INPUT=GDAL INPUT=MYGIS INPUT=SHAPEFILE
[kapil@localhost cgi-bin]$
I found that my mapserver doesn't support AGG means SUPPORTS = AGG is missing in the above output. But i have already installed AGG in my system. In order to clear this issue i gone through many threads in forums, but i was not satisfied with the answers. Atlast i came to know that, i have to recompile the mapserver with AGG. The following link gives you some idea about compiling mapserver with AGG in linux [URL] But the problem now i am facing is i have installed both the mapserver and AGG through YUM INSTALL command so i dont know how to recompile mapserver with AGG support. I think, there will be no configuration file normally when installing through Yum insatll command.

Does anyone has the information regarding a collective repository for ubuntu download packages which provides a single download for all the packages or selective packages, may be some torrent sort of links.I know of packages.ubuntu.com but there the packages are dispersed. Downloading each one of them requires a hell lot of time. Doesn't anyone has this information where a one click download of packages is facilitated.

Is there any difference between the packages in the repository, for ubuntu-XXX-server vs. ubuntu-XXX-desktop vs. kubuntu-XXX-desktop? Or are the different systems based just on what the default install from the ISOs is?

What the hey??? I was looking to install Virtualbox via Synaptic the other day and I found a package with "~Ubuntu~lucid" next to the latest version. I have all confidence in the Mint team and I'm sure they scrutinized these packages for compatibility, but a little disclaimer would have been nice. I do not want any Ubuntu packages on my system. The least they could do was package the source code into a pure .deb.
