General :: Make System Boot Up Into Window Manager-less X Session?
Dec 30, 2010I am setting up a thin client boot (over NFS) with x2go thinclient. So far everything works, the client boots over PXE, mounts the NFS dir on the server. But the x2go thinclient system does not install properly. I end up with a CLI prompt, to log in. It does not start X, not does it start the x2go client in a window managerless X session.
X2go is, in case you don't know it yet, a cool Linux X terminal session system, very much like Nomachines NXserver. I like it very much, since my experience, especially with freenx has not been good.
Now I am missing some Linux knowhow here: I know that after startup (the CLI part), the display manager is started (GDM or KDM), which starts the X server and shows the graphical login. Now since X2go does not properly setup and there is no documentation about the thinclient part, I will set it up myself.
I need the system to boot up, startx and then immediately start an X program (x2goclient), without having to log in before.
I found that putting a .xsession file in to the users home dir causes that script to be run when you invoke startx.But when I put startx in a script that runs as the last one in the runlevel (as in S05startx), it does not run at all.
What is the proper way to run X and a program on it directly, right at startup?

Feb 22, 2010So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.

Jan 5, 2010I am a user or consumer of Knoppix 5.1 and Knoppix 6.2, I see in 6.2 version a very usefully tool, an icon in task bar thats help my internet connection in auto, even if I use a mobile modem like Huawei E160, I only select a 'Auto Mobile Broadband (GSM) connection' and, voila, internet is active. Into version 5.1 don't exist this option. I need to find packages like network-manager.... and all relatives and install in 5.1 in correct order to success.
General :: Error - The Session Manager Initialization System Process Terminated Unexpectedly With A Status
Jun 5, 2011I installed slackware 12.1 from files i downloaded and converted to cd (images). There are six "disks" i downloaded from the slackware site and converted to images via a homemade .cmd in windows xp and then burned using imgburn.
I partitioned my hd (canibalized from an acquaintance's emachine and connected it to my desktop (1G ram, 2Ghz processor). Booted from disk 1 and fomatted the 80G HD for 2 partitions of linuxswapable at 2G apeice and 2 partitions of bootable linux. (Because i want to try another distro later). I ran the setup installing most everything and all seemed to go well. After i exited setup and restarted, it identifed the cd/hd as normal and then went into some sort of recovery mode with the emachine logo call pcangel, after which it tells me.
STOP: c0000021a (fatal system error) The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). the system has been shut down. So, is this indeed an xp error message, and if so, why am i getting it after formatting everything?
General :: Windows XP Failed To Boot In Dual Boot System?
Jul 5, 2011The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)
Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?
General :: Laptop Logging Out Of Window Manager A Few Minutes After Boot Up And Login
Sep 1, 2010I have a troubling issue. I log into Linux Mint 9 (fully up-to-date) on my Samsung Q320 laptop with power connected and after a few minutes it seems like the entire X session dies, I am logged out, all processes are killed and I am presented with the normal GDM login screen. When I first installed Linux Mint, this never happened. I have the NVidia closed-source driver installed and when the system logs me out, it immediately restarts X loading the NVidia driver which flashes the logo on screen. This all happens instantaneously, so it is not a reboot of the machine, just a restart of the display manager it seems.
There does not seem to be any cause for this. I have disabled all screen saver and power management settings that may lead my system to auto-logout of Gnome. The system log doesn't indicate anything unusual happening. Confused about where to to take it from here bar and fresh install of the OS. Perhaps there are some X11 logs I should be checking.
Update: Moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and its recommended NVidia driver and have not experienced this problem since.
General :: From Boot To Boot (system Transfer)?
Aug 2, 2010Suppose I have 2 hard drives, each with 4 partitions. One hard drive has OpenSuse 10.3 on one of it's partitions, and the other hard drive has Ubuntu 10.04 on one of it's partitions.
I would like to know if it is possible to boot from a System Rescue CD or Parted Magic (CD), then look over the hard drives and partitions with a partition editor, then choose one Linux partition, and "boot that distro". Somehow, I suppose, control from the live CD would be given to the chosen hard drive system ???

Software :: Two Grubs - Installed Ubuntu 10.04 - Boot Using Windows 7 Boot Manager ?
May 6, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.
I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).
I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.

Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3
And I get this:

The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.
And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.
I guess I've installed two Grubs.
How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?

Jun 27, 2011I have to have a dual-boot system: Windows 7 and Slackware. Rebooting is painful! Isn't there a way for booting Windows inside Linux? Not like VirtualBox thing, I've Windows on my hard drive.
+ I'm sure there is a way because I've read some HOW-TOs about it but sadly I can't find them.

May 27, 2010I have installed Ubuntu in my system.After a forced shutdown i am unable to boot into my system.when booting via recovery mode its failing in file system check.Its telling "fsck:No such file". But if i boot "normal boot up" its booting up and i am able to login.After logging in, nothing is getting displayed.Just a blank screen comes up.After sometime screen saver comes.If i press any button desktop screen appears but no folders are displayed.

Apr 20, 2011I have installed a Debian System on a removable USB-drive just the same way I would do it for a normal harddisk drive.All was working fine until I tried to boot the system.I have set up the USB-stick as first boot device in the BIOS, and written grub in the MBR of the stick.When trying to boot it, "Grub Error 2" will always be risen (I am using grub-0.98).
The only drive I have installed except the USB-stick is a SATA-harddisk, so normally the USB-stick is called /dev/sdb.I have already tried changing root in menu.lst to (hd0,0) or the kernel root to /dev/sda1 but nothing seems to help.
General :: System Won't Boot From Hard Drive
Jun 22, 2010Something caused my Fedora 11 system to reboot this evening, only it keeps trying to boot from a CD/DVD. I get to a prompt that says "Boot from CD/DVD" and then it appears just to wait. I can insert my Fedora 11 installation disk and boot from it in rescue mode, and then I can see my entire file system, so I don't think the hard drive has failed. The system just doesn't seem to want to boot from the HD any more. I can get to a command line using the Fedora rescue mode, but I don't know what to do once I'm there.
one additional note. Around a month and a half ago I deleted some files by mistake and wanted to try to recover them. I tried a bunch of approaches that I came across (none worked), and I do remember that one of them had instructions to unmount a portion of the filesystem to protect it from being overwritten before I could recover the files.
Unfortunately, at this point I have no real memory of exactly what I did, but the system has been working fine since then. I would have thought that I had rebooted since then, but it's possible that this is the first time I've rebooted. Could I have unmounted some part of the file system such that it would still by unmounted even when rebooting? How can I check this from the command line I get in rescue mode? (My file system gets mounted under /mnt/sysimage/)

Apr 28, 2011My computer(win xp) crashed. When I turn it on I get the flickering line. If I press F2 while the BIOS is loading I can access the BIOS setup, but no operating system will load. I am not very familiar with BIOS. I put a cd in the cd drive that contained the latest download of Ubuntu and told it to reboot. Nothing happened. Setup says my CD-drive is set to a secondary drive. I looked in the CD files and I saw the windows installer (wubi). Is there a way I can boot linux?

Mar 27, 2011I've been running Fedora 10 since it came out (I'm doing some numerical modeling for my thesis), but I've got some questions about a new box I'm going to build. I am going to build a new 64bit machine, dual boot with Win7 and Poseidon Linux (waiting for the 64bit version to come out later this year).is there an advantage to having each OS reside on a different physical HDD? meaning - 1 hard drive for Win and 1 hard drive for Linux and just decide which HDD to boot when I turn the machine on. -or is it better to have them reside on the same HDD and just have a separate HDD for data / storage? -is there a good resource to describe some optimal architecture's? I've searched through the forums and haven't found anything that concise / on-target / similar. As additional info: this box will be my livelihood, so right now, money is not really an object in terms of HDDs, etc.

Just installing a dist and then another one after it will replace the GRUB boot screen every time, and some dists might override previous GRUB menus entirely.
On a previous machine I created a GRUB partition which chain-loads GRUB for each dist, but now I can't remember how I did it.
The hard drive is currently empty, since I started playing around with repartitioning. What is the easiest way to install GRUB to a partition? Links are welcome, but please no generic "install GRUB" guides because the ones I've found haven't been relevant to my particular situation (empty hard drive, multi boot environment, no CD/floppy)..
General :: Windows - Backup A Dual Boot System?
Aug 29, 2010I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.
My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.

Jan 8, 2011I am new Linux, but have already installed a new HDD in my PC and successfully installed Fedora 14. Unfortunately, I am unable to configure my system for dual boot and my PC always boots right up into Windows Vista which is the original OS on my original HDD. I have searched the web, but only find examples of splitting partitions and dual booting into different versions of Windows. I apologize for the simple question, but I am certain that someone in here can point me in the right direction. My intention is to migrate to Linux entirely, but want to learn Linux before completing a full migration.
