Amarok is nice, and currently the only thing I've tried that will actually play audio from network shares and not lock up. Only problem is that it doesn't seem to list my library by directory/folder structure.. only album/artist/genre or some variation thereof. Is there anything that does list by folder structure?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been contemplating making a device for my grandmother and I was hoping some body may be able to steer me in the correct direction for an element that eludes me. My Grandmother is now blind and so can no longer read but instead loves listening to audio books. The family have bought her many audio books but there's a problem. Many of the unabridged books come on several CD's which she tends to mix up when there's nobody around to help. I've tried ripping CD's to mp3 and this has helped a lot however we still have an issue. She can't see which book is which so may be in the mood for an Agatha Christie and end up with the Hobbit.
My thoughts have been make a minimal system combing Festive to read titles of the books in her library to her. The missing element I've been unable to find is an audio player that keeps a record of her position in each book. The idea of course being that she can continue each story from the point she left off, even if the system reboots.
I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but I've recently "switched" to openbox, and I don't want a load of GNOME libs and files tainting my clean OS. Also, I don't want any QT apps, by virtue of the fact that I am doing fine with only GTK installed and don't want extra libs. I prefer an audio player on the lighter side. I've been tinkering with Audacious but I guess I just haven't taken to it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently using Fedora 11 KDE as my primary operating system at work, but i am having a little bit of troubles getting an audio player to work properly. I am trying to play music off of a separate primary FAT32 file system (which is my shared drive amongst all my operating systems), but when i attempt to load the files via JuK, i receive this error: cannot find demultiplexer plugin for MRL.
I have been playing around with other players as well, and it seems like the only other player which will actually load up the media on this separate partition is Banshee, but doesn't seem to want to play it.
I installed Kubuntu 9.10 one week earlier and installed VLC player in it. But from that day VLC player is playing the video but not the audio. Also Banshee player is not playing any audio in Kubuntu.
View 4 Replies View Relatedaudio player of the likes of RyhthmBox, but uses way less CPU? I have an older PC which runs a 667MHz CPU, and 256Mb ram. It's got Ubuntu 10.04, but RhythmBox struggles to play. Using the Top command, RhythmBox consumes 50% CPU, PulseAudio consumes 27%, X11 uses 17%, and the rest is made up of other processes. Total usage when RhythmBox plays is 98-100% CPU.
So, you can see that I really need an audio player that would use half that of RhythmBox for this PC to be effective. The PC will only ever be used as an audio playout system. I've tried Exaile, which consumes 60% CPU, and the sound simple refuses to come through. VLC doesn't even seem to want to know about it. It launches, and that's about it.
I need my Ubuntu box to play an http audio stream on boot. It must heedlessly attempt to reconnect to the audio stream no matter how many network errors I may or may not have.
Currently using VLC on boot with the commands: -loop -http-reconnect
VLC works fine for the first little while, but after a day or two, it doesn't try to reconnect enough to meet my needs.
I'm looking at dumping Rhythmbox for a new player on my netbook. I've tried Banshee which seemed good, apart from being quite sluggish (mono?).
Rhythmbox is now dead development wise I think aswell.
Exaile looks interesting, and I've heard good things about Clementine (although may be sluggish as its qt4)
I am a new user of opensuse 11.1. I want to know about audio/video player that support all kind of format and also a dvd player ...
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhich linux media player is good for listening audio books,
I need something with good bookmark support, something to at least remember where I left last time.
This is a fresh install of Listen from synaptic on 9.10. I can launch it with no obvious problems:
Code:
evan@evan-laptop:~$ listen
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'Element'
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/musicbrainz2/model.py:21: DeprecationWarning: the sets module is deprecated
[Code].....
last night Listen would crash with a seg fault whenever I tried to play something, but now instead i'm getting this.
I've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).

I have sounds when the computer start and shutdown and other sounds like incoming mail and stuff just not in amarok or any other media player at all nor on ..... and I've been googling it for the last few days and have found others with simular problems but none running Kubuntu 10.04 so I figured I'd give the solutions they got a try but I just can't get them to work on my computer. Might be my lack of linux skill so please go eazy on me and yes I have checked that the audio is not muted. Which codec pack to be installed and how to do it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't play video on any player (vlc, mplayer, totem), the files open, sound works, but video is black. I suspect something went wrong when I upgraded to VLC 1.1.4 using a ppa, I've read that the ffmpeg can screw up and then video just stops. Trying to play m4v, mkv, avi, none work.
Not sure what to do, reinstalling seems like a hassle. Already tried removing vlc and the new ppa, tried removing ffmpeg and reinstalling, removing ubuntu-restricted-extras.
My flash player has stopped playing back audio on a particular TV show recording. Movie is fine but no audio. It's fine with every other movie. However, I notice I can play that same tv show in windows, which has to discount a problem with the station or their movie files. The slack package used to play this tv TV program until recently.
Code:

Do you think reinstalling the package would fix it?
i.e.
Code:
slackpkg remove flash-player-plugin-10.0_r45-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
then
Code:
slackpkg install flash-player-plugin-10.0_r45-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz
