General :: Mount USB Drive - Device Pointers Static?

I'm using an external USB drive to perform system backups. The script I'm using has a mount command - mount /dev/sdcx /systembak, it works fine until the external drive is mounted into a different USB port which causes the device path to change and the script needs to be modified to reflect that change. Looking in the /dev/disk/ directory I see ./by-id ./by-label ./by-path ./by-uuid. I've been able to mount the disk using one of the device pointers in those directories; are any of those device pointers static or do they change every time the USB disk is plugged into a different USB port.

Any basic description of how linux assigns drive letters? I understand that a drive letter assignment is not static. If I add a drive between /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, my /dev/sdb will become /dev/sdc and the new drive will become /dev/sdb. I have a hot swap tray and have come into some unexpected behavior. I removed /dev/sde from the hot swap tray and then loaded another drive into this same tray. When I mounted the new drive with options in fstab, it wouldn't mount because the new drive was /dev/sdf, not /dev/sde. Apparently, linux is looking at the id of the drive in addition to it's place in the BIOS chain.
My fstab entry is:
/dev/sde /backups auto noauto,rw,noexec,async,user 0 0
I was avoiding using UUIDs in the fstab so that new HDDs would not have to be "registered" in the fstab prior to use. Is there a way to tell linux (or fstab) whatever drive is plugged into SATA channel X mount to /mountpoint?

Ubuntu was a good choice for free server O/S. I am currently downloading it. My ISP wants to bind my static IP to a MAC address of the device that will be making my connection for me. Should my server be behind my router or in front of it? I kinda wanted it to be the access point and be able to monitor the usage from all the terminals in my house. I got a sort of usb connected device(not an external enclosure) so i can connect a sata hard drive into a machine that only has ide connections but the drive is not mounting. I am not very good at mounting slave hard drives anyway ,,,,never been able to get one happening without help. I am wanting to read this drive as i killed another desktop machine(i think the mb) and i need the data off the hard drive. The drive is shown in a directory and in the media directory. Can't think of what else sorry as i am so tired from testing everything out of the machine that i killed.....

How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

no entries exist in the /dev folder for hdc,cdrom,dvd, or any other drive or drive type than hda. The only other similar device is sg0 which doesn't work either. I have tried every variation of mount I can find with every available drive and drive type and nothing works, but this is the drive I installed FC14 with, and it installed perfectly (except for forgetting where it came from!!)Do I have to install a module or recompile the kernel just to get linux to recognize the drive it came from?

I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux.When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk.
If I look at
cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs
I get
ATA Hitachi HTS54321 FB2O
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N RP05
Seagate Desktop 0130
Corsair CSSD-R60GB2
So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result.
A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).
Added:I did try to mount /dev/sg3 but mount say that its not a block device. (File say Its a character special device).

Final update:Corsair have said that the disk design is broken and there does not seem to be any way to make it work.

I am setting up a Raid5 and torture testing it. I added two eSata ports to my machine. When a drive is installed in that eSata port and the machine then booted up the device name (e.g. /dev/sdc) is inserted in the middle of my Raid devices. And that is just one example of how the device names can change.I did a search on 'static device names' but I saw nothing directly related to Raid. What I did see were suggestions to create udev rules based on UUID. But that was for single disks, not Raid, where each drive/partition in the raid array appears to have the same UUID.I'm surprised this does not come up in the various Raid howtos because it is impossible to keep a Raid array intact without solving this problem unless the machine is never touched thereafter.

I am developing a device that will run Linux as its operating system.The device is a small form factor X86 device with a flash drive exposed as a SATA-device. So it is not very dissimilar from any other PC running Linux.For several good reasons I am building my own "distribution", instead of using an existing one.What confuses me is how mount/umount of the root file system is handled.I boot my kernel with the commandline "root=/dev/sda1 rw" which works fine. But everytime I do poweroff or reboot Busybox complained about no /etc/fstab, so I decided to build one.Should I have an entry for my root file system? It seems like this is shadowed by the rootfs anyway. I.e. if I have the fstab entry "/dev/sda1 / ext2 1 1" mount still reports rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)/dev/root on / type ext2 (rw,relatime,errors=continue)My questions are:Do I need to worry? Will the drive be correctly unmounted by the kernel on poweroff/reboot?If I want to perform file system checking on boot, can I do that without resorting to an initrd?

I have a program which mounts /dev/sdb1 for which I lack the source code. This device does not exist on my RedHat 9 system and I want to create /dev/sdb1 such that it's an alias for /dev/hdb1 Can I do this? with MAKEDEV?
I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1

What do I call this device in /etc/fstab. Currently the line I'm using is... code...
Having made a mount directory (/media/ipod) an error message tells me
... mount: special device /dev/sdc0 does not exist...
when I try to mount it.
I cannot see it in 'gparted' or 'disk utility' but I can see it on sys log and kern log when I plug it in and remove it.
I have visited several help forums and loaded several types of recommended software (ifuse-libs and mux's etc) but with no satisfactory result.
I have successfully 'Jail broken' the device using 'Blackra1n' on a windows machine.
It used to appear on the desktop but alas...no more. I've obviously broken something!

I am using a 3rd party kernel driver that does not support udev properly. When I was using wheezy I placed the required device files in /lib/udev/devices.
The udev in jessie does not appear to support this. Is there any way to have udev create these device files or will I have to create then using a script at boot-up?

Since my dvd-writer passed away, I disconnected it from the pc and I reconnected temporarily, an older one that I have (an IDE one).My problem is, that I don't any longer have a static mount point (/dev/cdrom, or something similar), but I have a dynamic one instead (eg. for the dvd labeled "My_data", I have /media/My_data).I really dislike dynamic mount points, since I can't work from konsole (eg. eject doesn't work any more), or with cd archivers (like cdcat).

I have one hard disk (call her HDA) that contains nothing but a single ext4 partition containing a backup of all my important data. Last night I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my primary hard disk (call her HDB) and from there proceeded to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 11.04 upgrade. In 10.10, I was able to read HDA just fine. However after the upgrade, I can no longer mount this drive. When mounting from file browser:

how to get openSUSE 11.2 to automount a USB drive (Creative Zen to be precise) to a static mount point? At the moment KDE is filling up my media folder with disc-x folders and the podcatching software keeps picking the wrong one to sync to. It's not my PC so command-line mounting is out of the question.

I have digital camera (Canon EOS 550d) which I connect to my computer using a USB cable. I can see that the camera file system is mounted under "~/.gvfs/gphoto2-XYZ" where XYZ seems to be a dynamic device dependent string that changes every time I connect the camera.The thing is: I need the mount position ALWAYS to stay the same, so my photo management program (Bibble) knows where to download the images from.I am not sure how to do this, but I guess there must be a way to configure GVFS/FUSE or whatever is responsible for mounting the camera to use a fixed mount point (like /media/camera or something).
